MCX launches Electricity Futures Contract

With effect from 10 July 2025
Multi Commodity Exchange of India announced the launch of the Electricity Futures Contract, effective from Thursday, 10 July 2025, marking a significant milestone in the development of the country's energy derivatives market.
MCX believes this launch is timely, as the electricity sector is witnessing significant growth with a need to manage price stability, fluctuating demand, fuel costs, and market developments. The Electricity Futures contract will help power generators, distribution companies, large industrial consumers, and financial participants with a transparent, liquid, and reliable hedging mechanism. It will also promote investors with a widely used commodity to add to their portfolio.
The new Electricity Futures Contract aims to meet the growing demand for structured electricity price risk management instruments. The contract will be available for all 12 calendar months of the year, with trading initially open for the current and next three months. The trading unit is 50 MWh, quoted in Indian Rupees per MWh (excluding taxes and levies), with a tick size of ₹1 per MWh. The contract will be cash settled based on the Volume Weighted Average of the Unconstrained Market Clearing Price (UMCP) of the Day Ahead Market (DAM) at the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) for all calendar days in the expiry month.
The contract will follow SEBI's Daily Price Limits (DPL) for market stability, with an initial slab of 6%, extendable up to 9% on a given day. The initial margin requirement is a minimum of 10% or volatility VaR based margins, whichever is higher. Client level position limits are capped at 3 lakh MWh or 5% of the market-wide open interest whichever is higher.

Gold hits record highs above Rs 1 lakh on tariff fears and safe-haven demand! Should you buy, hold or sell? Here's what experts say

Gold prices in India surged to unprecedented levels last week, breaching the Rs 1.02 lakh mark on Friday, driven by US President Donald Trump's tariff policies and a broader global flight to safety. Market experts say the rally reflects deepening concerns over the US dollar's reliability, inflation risks, and geopolitical tensions. 'Uncertainty over the long-term reliability of the US dollar is prompting a global shift towards gold, with central banks actively reallocating reserves as a hedge. Coupled with rising geopolitical tensions, these factors have significantly strengthened gold's safe-haven appeal,' Rahul Singh, CIO – Equities, Tata Asset Management, told ET. Multiple drivers behind the surge Kaynat Chainwala, AVP – Commodity Research, Kotak Securities, cited a combination of macroeconomic and geopolitical factors. She noted that softness in the US labour market and consumer spending has raised fears of a broader slowdown, while expectations of a dovish Federal Reserve are weighing on the dollar, pushing it below the 98 level and supporting gold. Adding fuel to the rally, reports that the US has imposed tariffs on imports of one-kilo gold bars — the most commonly traded form on COMEX — sparked fears of supply tightness. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2/3/4 BHKs by Lodha in Phase 1 Hinjewadi Lodha Panache Contact Us Undo This pushed COMEX futures more than $100 above spot prices, with prices hitting a record $3,534/oz. On MCX, gold breached Rs 1,02,000 per 10 grams. According to an ET report, October gold futures on MCX closed Friday at Rs 1,02,191 per 10 grams — an all-time high — supported by tariff uncertainty and safe-haven buying from global central banks. Buy, hold, or sell gold? Chainwala believes tariff-driven inflation risks, coupled with signs of a cooling US labour market, have heightened stagflation concerns. With a high probability of a Fed rate cut in September, she sees the gold outlook as bullish and advises a buy-on-dips strategy, with entry levels around $3,350/oz in spot gold and Rs 1,00,500/10 grams on MCX. Singh suggests maintaining gold as a long-term core allocation. With a weakening US dollar and rising geopolitical uncertainty, he says even central banks are diversifying into gold as a hedge against systemic risk. 'These should not be treated as short-term bets but as strategic allocations over a 3–5 year horizon,' he said, adding that while tactical changes can be made based on price movements, gold's fundamental role as a hedge remains. Investment routes Investors can gain gold exposure through: Gold funds: Suitable for portfolio diversification; typically up to 10% of large portfolios can be allocated to gold. For smaller portfolios, advisors suggest skipping them. Gold ETFs: Exchange-traded funds that track the price of physical gold, usually backed by one gram per unit. Requires a demat and trading account. Physical gold: Traditional option, but less liquid and often incurs making charges. Sovereign Gold Bonds: Government-issued, offering interest income along with gold price appreciation. Multi-asset funds: Hybrid schemes with at least 10% in three or more asset classes, often including equity, debt, and gold. Singh recommends gold ETFs for their liquidity and ease, and multi-asset funds for dynamic rebalancing between asset classes with equity taxation benefits, depending on investor tax situations and desired involvement. Chainwala agrees that ETFs and gold-focused multi-asset funds are more convenient and tax-efficient than physical gold. Performance snapshot Gold ETFs have delivered an average return of 45.01% over the last year and 31.50% so far in 2025. Multi-asset allocation funds have returned 7.16% in the last year and 5.78% in 2025 to date. Singh expects near-term consolidation for gold within a $3,000–$3,500 per ounce range as markets digest tariff changes, geopolitical risks, and US growth concerns. 'Any escalation on the tariff or geopolitical front could boost demand for gold as a safe-haven asset,' he said. Chainwala also sees gold benefiting from tariff uncertainty, inflation concerns, and a weakening dollar. Quant Mutual Fund, in its August outlook, noted that while August is seasonally bullish for gold, prices may have peaked near $3,500/oz and could correct by 12–15% in dollar terms over the next two months. 'Trump's threats will not have any impact on India': Asian energy expert makes big statement on US tariffs, says India will only...

US President Donald Trump- File image New Delhi: In a significant statement amid the US-India trade deal conflict where US President Donald Trump announced an extra 25% tariff on India for buying Russian crude oil in addition to the 25% tariffs already imposed on India from August 7, Clyde Russell, an Asia Commodities and Energy Columnist at Reuters has said that the crude oil market feels that America's threat to India to buy Russian oil will have no effect. Why Trump's tariffs on India will make no impact? For a background, US President Trump, who has already declared a 25% hike effective August 28, warned of further action if India doesn't halt Russian oil purchases. In response to the threat from the US President, a Reuters expert has said that the warning issued by US President Donald Trump is more about leveraging pressure on Russia ahead of possible talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin than a direct move against India. The expert also said that given current low crude prices, it is unlikely India will change its sourcing strategy. How is Indian Rupees reacting to US tariffs? In a strong positive reaction to the US tariffs, the Indian rupee opened stronger on Monday, amid additional 25 per cent tariff proposed by US President Donald Trump on India, which is set to take effect from August 27. As per a report by IANS news agency, the rupee likely inched up higher on optimism that the Russia-Ukraine war will end following the upcoming US-Russia negotiations on August 15, leading to removal of additional tariffs on India. The report also said that the local currency opened 13 paise stronger at 87.53 against the US dollar up from 87.66 on Friday. The immediate trading range is expected to be between 87.25 and 87.80, according to analysts. The Indian rupee was expected to open with small gains today at 87.51, while markets are awaiting US and domestic inflation data. (With inputs from agencies)

Gold prices retrace from record high ahead of Trump-Putin meeting. Is it the right time to buy gold?

Gold prices on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) fell over 1% on Monday after touching an all-time high above ₹ 1,02,000 per 10 grams, tracking weakness in international bullion markets. Silver prices also traded sharply lower. MCX gold rate declined ₹ 1,295, or 1.27%, to an intraday low of ₹ 1,00,503 per 10 grams, while MCX silver futures dropped 1.59% to ₹ 1,13,047 per kg. Last week, MCX gold price had surged to a record ₹ 1,02,250 per 10 grams, supported by a depreciating rupee and heightened global macroeconomic risks, which boosted its appeal as a safe-haven asset. The latest pullback comes amid optimism over a potential resolution to the Russia–Ukraine conflict, following the announcement of a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15 in Alaska to discuss ending the war. 'Elevated geopolitical tensions, looming US tariffs, and expectations of US Federal Reserve rate cuts have been driving gold demand. Safe-haven buying has remained resilient, even as domestic jewelry demand weakens,' said Jigar Trivedi, Senior Research Analyst, Reliance Securities. However, analysts now believe several of the factors underpinning this year's gold rally may have peaked, increasing the likelihood of a correction. Ajay Kedia, Director, Kedia Advisory, noted that the triggers for gold price rally are starting to fade. 'The announcement of the Trump–Putin meeting has eased geopolitical concerns over the Ukraine war. Expectations of a pause in US rate cuts next year, a stabilising dollar index, and slower central bank buying all point to potential weakness in gold prices ahead,' he said. According to Kedia, gold is already in a technically overbought zone. 'Gold prices have been facing resistance at the $3,500 level. On MCX, gold prices could correct to ₹ 96,500 – ₹ 97,600 in the short term, with support at ₹ 97,600 and resistance at ₹ 1,03,500,' he added. Trivedi also warned that record-high prices could dampen short-term physical demand in jewelry and retail segments. 'Current levels present an opportunity to partially book profits. MCX gold price for October futures could drop to ₹ 96,000 – ₹ 92,000 per 10 grams over the next two to three months, while resistance is seen at ₹ 1,06,000,' he said. With geopolitical risk premiums easing and key bullish drivers losing momentum, analysts suggest that investors consider partial profit booking in gold at current elevated levels, while keeping a close watch on global developments and technical indicators.
