Moment murderer is arrested as he touches down on UK soil 18 months after stabbing a teenager to death

A cold-blooded killer has been arrested after finally returning to the UK - 18 months after stabbing a teenager to death on a night out. Police have today released video footage showing officers waiting on the tarmac as Thomas Dures, 22, landed back on British soil in January, ending a months-long manhunt that stretched across Europe. Dures had spent 18 months on the run after brutally stabbing 19-year-old Matthew Daulby to death during a night out in Ormskirk, Lancashire, in July 2023. Matthew, who was out with friends, suffered a fatal stab wound to the chest after a sudden and shocking street attack in the early hours of the morning. Another man was also stabbed during the violence. Despite desperate efforts by paramedics, Matthew was later pronounced dead in hospital. A Home Office post-mortem confirmed he had died from a single stab wound. Chilling CCTV played to the court during Dures' trial showed him and accomplice Henry Houghton lurking in an alleyway moments before the deadly altercation. Armed with a lock knife, Dures can be seen striding towards Matthew's group, opening the blade as he advanced. Houghton followed, swinging a crude weapon made of a rock stuffed inside a sock. Matthew was struck with the makeshift weapon, causing damage to his brain and leaving him disoriented. It was in this vulnerable state that Dures plunged the knife into his chest. After the attack, Dures fled the scene - first looping around the town centre to discard his jacket on a park bench, and then dumping the murder weapon in a ginnel near Ormskirk Parish Church. Both items were later recovered by a dog walker and an estate agent, and handed in to police. Dures then vanished. Police launched multiple appeals to find him, but he evaded capture, fleeing the country and living abroad while Matthew's family grieved. It wasn't until January 2025 - 18 months after the murder - that Dures finally handed himself in to a police station in Greece. He was extradited to the UK shortly after, where he was met by officers and arrested the moment he stepped off the plane. In a statement Lancashire Police said: 'The Daulby family have had to wait patiently for the man responsible for delivering the fatal injury to answer for his crimes. 'The video shows the moment Thomas Dures landed back on English soil, to face trial. 'The Daulbys have had to grieve all of this time, knowing the man responsible for taking their son's life was actively evading justice and celebrating his 21st birthday in the sun. Something Matthew will never be able to do.' Police added that Dures returned to the UK 'with the intent of getting in the dock and telling a catalogue of lies'. 'He pointed the finger of blame at everybody but himself and took no accountability for his actions. Thankfully the jury saw through his lies and ensured that Dures will be held accountable for his crimes.' A jury at Preston Crown Court took less than three hours to find Dures guilty of Matthew's murder and the wounding of a second man. He has now been sentenced to life in prison. Yesterday marked two years since Matthew was killed and his family say the pain of losing him has not eased. In a heartbreaking victim impact statement read to the court, Matthew's mother Angela described Dures' actions as 'cowardly' and said they had left her family having to do things 'we would never have imagined having to do'. Matthew's father, Gary, described his son as 'kind, funny, clever and fiercely loyal' and said the family's world had been 'shattered beyond recognition'.

Migrant, 26, who entered the UK with 'grotesque' child abuse videos gives thumbs up after being spared jail and deportation

A migrant caught with child abuse videos on his phone gave a thumbs up outside court after being spared jail and deportation. Osamah Al-Haddad was caught with three 'grotesque' videos when he arrived at Heathrow airport from Cairo, Egypt, in January 2024. Immigration officers uncovered the material, including 'depraved' footage of a man having sex with a goat, when they searched his mobile during asylum screening. The Yemen native, 26, originally came to the UK on a student visa, then claimed asylum after insisting the Houthis were seeking out his father. He was also under pressure by the Houthis to join their army and claimed he is not able to return to Yemen because 'of his fear of repercussions [for] refusing to fight,' a court heard. Al-Haddad, of no fixed address, admitted three counts of making indecent photos of children and one count of making a pseudo-photograph of a child. He claimed to have no sexual interest in children and that the images were sent to him by a friend on WhatsApp. Al-Haddad was sentenced to 30 weeks, suspended for a year, and was also made subject to a sexual harm prevention order for ten years. He was also ordered to do 150 hours of unpaid work. Last April, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper had set out plans to ban foreign sex offenders from gaining asylum in the UK, but any offender would have to be sentenced to more than a year in prison. Isleworth Crown Court heard how Al-Haddad's asylum application was pending, but he is allowed to live and work in Plymouth, Devon. 'Although the defendant entered the country as an asylum seeker, he is now working in a restaurant,' said defence barrister John Hunter. 'He receives a monthly income of around £781 a month. He gives most to his wife and child back in Yemen, and he hopes to bring them to this country to live with him.' Al-Haddad was assisted by an Arabic interpreter as Judge Fiona Barrie told him: 'You are 26 years of age, and you pleaded guilty to all offences. 'The category A video involves an act of bestiality which is grotesque and is depraved. 'You should do well to remember that this is a real child who has experienced this abuse, and those are significant aggravating factors. 'You claim you have no sexual interest in children and received the images from a WhatsApp group. 'But I share the concerns of the pre-sentence report which state that you are not entirely honest about that. 'You have had those videos saved since August 2021, in your possession to view and certainly not deleted by you.' In footage filmed by a passerby after sentencing, Al-Haddad can be seen denying any knowledge of the images' source as he tries to rush away following the verdict. He can be heard saying: 'I don't know. I explained them (the court) everything (sic)' before giving the filmer a thumbs up as he walks away.

Migrant caught with child abuse videos spared jail and deportation

A Yemeni migrant who entered the country with child abuse videos on his phone gave the thumbs up as he was spared jail and deportation. Osamah Al-Haddad, 26, was caught with three videos, including one showing a man having sex with a goat, when he flew into Heathrow Airport from Cairo in January last year. But he was spared prison over fears that he may be forced to fight for the Houthis if returned to Yemen. Isleworth Crown Court heard Al-Haddad came to Britain on a student visa before applying for asylum because 'the Houthis were seeking out his father'. Any asylum seeker sentenced to more than a year in prison can be refused the status and be deported. But Al-Haddad will stay until his application is decided after he was only given a 30-week suspended sentence. James O'Connell, prosecuting, said immigration officers uncovered the material when they searched his phone during asylum screening. 'The defendant was interviewed and made no comment to questions he was asked,' said Mr O'Connell. John Hunter, defending, said: 'The Houthis also asked the defendant where he was because they wanted him to join their army. As a result of that, he then applied for asylum. He is not able to return to Yemen, because of his fear of repercussions [for] refusing to fight.' Mr Hunter said Al-Haddad's asylum application was pending but he was allowed to live and work in Plymouth, Devon. 'Although the defendant entered the country as an asylum seeker, he is now working in a restaurant,' he said. 'He receives a monthly income of around £781. He gives most to his wife and child back in Yemen, and he hopes to bring them to this country to live with him.' You have had those videos saved since August 2021, in your possession to view and certainly not deleted by you.' Judge Barrie sentenced Al-Haddad to 30 weeks, suspended for a year. Al-Haddad was also made subject to a sexual harm prevention order for 10 years, and 150 hours of unpaid work.
