2025 NBA Draft: Which lottery hopeful is the best fit for Cooper Flagg?

Fox Sports08-04-2025
Cooper Flagg had a remarkable freshman season at Duke .
On a Blue Devils team that claimed a No. 1 seed in the 2025 NCAA Men's Tournament and reached the Final Four, Flagg showcased his ability to be a leading source of offense — attacking the rack, playing in isolation and boasting a respectable perimeter jumper. He also wreaked havoc on the defensive end, averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks per game, while shooting 48.1/38.5/84.0.
Flagg ended the season with ACC All-Defense honors and was named the ACC Player of the Year. Unforunately for him, his freshamn campaign ended in cataclysmic fashion, as Duke blew a six-point lead in the final minute of play against Houston in the Final Four.
Flagg will likely be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. While the lottery balls will determine who picks where, Utah, Washington, Charlotte, New Orleans and Philadelphia currently own the league's five worst records.
That said, here's how the aforementioned lottery teams rank as fits for Flagg. 5. Charlotte Hornets
The Hornets have a lot of compelling young players, but they continue to be a franchise going nowhere. Getting Flagg could be the pickup that finally turns the tide for Charlotte.
LaMelo Ball is an All-Star caliber scorer; Brandon Miller has the sharp offensive skill set to be a building block; Mark Williams is a productive, young center. Still, the Hornets haven't won 30 games in three seasons. Upon joining Charles Lee's rotation, Flagg wouldn't be relied on to play hero, as Ball is accustomed to taking on the scoring burden and Miller has displayed the ability to shoot and score with consistency.
Flagg letting the game come to him, forcing the issue at the rim and gradually getting acclimated would give the Hornets a potentially potent trio to build around in Flagg, Ball and Miller. The soon-to-be rookie forward could be the oomph that the Hornets need.
What puts Charlotte at the bottom of the best fits for Flagg, though, is forward Miles Bridges also being under contract for the next two years (potential forward logjam with Flagg) and the Hornets potentially feeling that using their top draft pick to trade for a substantial veteran enhancement is more worthwhile than continuing to add rookies. 4. Philadelphia 76ers
The Sixers are the biggest disappointment in the NBA this season, but if they land the first overall pick or trade up to get it, Flagg creates a fascinating situation regarding their future.
At first glance, adding star talent to a roster that already includes Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Paul George stands out. Flagg would be, at least, a tertiary source of offense and potentially serve as Philly's sixth man in a role where he plays 30 minutes a night. Given the chronic health concerns with Embiid and George, Flagg's scoring knack gives the 76ers tremendous frontcourt depth.
There's another way this could play out: Philadelphia drafts Flagg, makes him and Maxey the co-faces of their franchise and looks to get off of both Embiid and George in trades. If they're able to move one (if not both of Embiid and George), the duo of Maxey and Flagg allows the Sixers to retool, not rebuild, as the 24-year-old Maxey is a proven All-Star-caliber scorer in his own right, and Flagg is built to be plug-and-play. Plus, Quentin Grimes — who has been a loud emergence down the stretch for Philadelphia, averaging 22.6 points per game in his 26 games with the team — could be another long-term piece to the puzzle.
Flagg either gives Philadelphia outrageous scoring depth or offers them a chance to regroup for the better in quick order. Of course, the amount of moving pieces that could be part of adding Flagg and the difficulty that comes with moving Embiid and/or George (both injury and contract-related) could get in the way of the Duke star and the Sixers being a smooth fit. 3. New Orleans Pelicans
From injuries to racking up losses, this season has been a train wreck for the Pelicans. This season leading to Flagg could end up getting them back on track, though.
With Brandon Ingram gone (New Orleans moved him at the trade deadline), a potential void exists in the Pelicans' starting five. Granted, a healthy Trey Murphy III and Herbert Jones could fill that void. However, the Pelicans could also get Flagg, manage their roster as if he were their franchise player and find a team that's willing to take a chance on the oft-injured Zion Williamson in a trade.
In the wake of such a move, Flagg would become the focal point of head coach Willie Green's offense, giving the Pelicans a well-rounded scorer who could be their go-to player in due time. With everybody healthy come next season, Flagg would be accompanied by the versatile Dejounte Murray, a pair of continually blossoming wings in Jones and Jordan Hawkins, a veteran scorer in CJ McCollum and an emerging inside force in Yves Missi. All of a sudden, the Pelicans have a core that complements itself and is on the same timeline.
However, what stops the Pelicans from being No. 1 or 2 on this list is that a pair of teams have a clear need in their rotation that Flagg fills, whereas his fit in New Orleans is somewhat dependent on moving Williamson. 2. Utah Jazz
With the amount of wheeling and dealing the Jazz have done over the past three years, it's difficult to get a sense of how they view themselves. And, in the present, they have the worst record in the NBA. Getting Flagg would be a godsend for Utah.
Lauri Markkanen has grown into one of the better-scoring big men in the sport in Utah, but his scoring has dipped in each of the past two seasons. Flagg joining the mix takes some of the pressure off Markkanen to manufacture offense and makes Utah's rotation look different for the long haul.
Keyonte George has quickly become both a reliable scorer and facilitator; Walker Kessler is a rock in the paint on both ends of the floor; rookie Isaiah Collier has showcased playmaking ability; second-year player Brice Sensabaugh and wing Johnny Juzang have had scoring spurts. In drafting Flagg, the Jazz would get a new face to the franchise who, along with the roster that he joins, gives them reason to at least aspire for a berth in the NBA Play-in Tournament next season.
What stops Utah from being the best fit for Flagg is it possibly viewing a Flagg-Markkanen-Kessler frontcourt as too big and/or slowing down its operation.
That said, there's a team with a hole that Flagg would emphatically fill. 1. Washington Wizards
The Wizards are down bad, and need a player to pinpoint as a future star. Enter Flagg.
It's not as if Washington doesn't have nice pieces. Rookie and former second overall pick Alex Sarr is a physical specimen on both ends of the floor who's surely a player to build with; Bilal Coulibaly is a scrappy player who's getting more productive; Corey Kispert is a proven shooter; rookie Kyshawn George has had his moments in a high-minute role. But that one franchise player still isn't present.
Flagg gives the Wizards their No. 1 scorer. He's the multidimensional scorer who can play in isolation and has the superstar upside that their roster doesn't possess. Flagg can play out his rookie season as their offensive centerpiece, go through the physical grind of being the focus of defensive attention and be better for all the bumps in the road that he encounters in his rookie season.
After moving both Kyle Kuzma and Jonas Valanciunas — who Washington just signed to a three-year deal in the offseason — at the trade deadline, Jordan Poole, its leading scorer this season, could easily be the next player on the move. One way or another, adding a high-upside scorer is of the essence for Washington, and that player being their first-round pick (Flagg) is both financially ideal and lines up with its timeline.

OLB coach thinks Patriots found rare NFL talent in undrafted rookie

New England Patriots' outside linebackers coach Mike Smith had high praise for undrafted rookie linebacker Elijah Ponder. Ponder was an FCS All-American in 2023 and named to the All-Big Sky First-Team in 2023 and 2024. He recorded 167 tackles and 26.5 sacks during his run at the collegiate level. When it comes to training camp standouts, Ponder has been one of the more underrated rookies on the Patriots' roster. He is already viewed as a dark-horse candidate to make the final 53-man team. "I am fired up about that kid [Ponder]," said Smith. "...Watching him come out, because he was a guy that nobody was looking at. But when you look at his athletic ability, it's off the charts. He's a big rusher. He looks great in space. ...He's got this very rare ability of picking up things quick and look like he's done it from Day 1, which is remarkable. That kid is another one who has an extremely bright future. Probably one of the best free agent pickups I've ever seen." Training camp is always exciting, as new stars and impact playmakers begin to emerge. Ponder appears to be making headway in the defensive line conversation, and it could ultimately lead to him earning a spot on the roster. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.

Cam Schlitter's homer-suppressing tendencies haven't transferred over to the big leagues. The Yankees' rookie has allowed six long balls in 29 ⅔ innings since his big league debut on July 9. Schlitter's 1.82 homers allowed per nine innings is the 19th-highest among MLB pitchers with at least 29 innings pitched in that span. When Schlitter takes the mound on Wednesday against the Rays in Tampa Bay, I'm targeting the red-hot Junior Caminero to get the best of the right-hander. Last time Schlitter faced the Rays on July 28, Caminero took him deep in his first-ever plate appearance against him, hitting a 397-foot bomb to left field. Caminero has been on a ridiculous power-hitting run since the calendar turned to August. Tampa Bay Rays' Junior Caminero celebrates after hitting a solo home run during the second inning of a baseball game against the San Francisco Giants, Friday, Aug. 15, 2025, in San Francisco. AP His eight home runs this month are tied with A's slugger Shea Langeliers for the most in Major League Baseball heading into Tuesday's play. Since the All-Star break, Caminero's .624 slugging percentage is the seventh-highest in the league. Caminero has also been a much different hitter on the Rays' home field, taking full advantage of the dimensions at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Learn all you need to know about MLB Betting He's hitting .323/.359/.620 at home compared to just .194/.240/.439 on the road this season. I like Caminero to homer on Wednesday, but bettors could play it a little safer by taking the young slugger to go Over 1.5 total bases. The play: Junior Caminero to hit a home run (+320, FanDuel) and to have more than 1.5 total bases (+110, Bet365) Why Trust New York Post Betting Dylan Svoboda is a versatile writer and analyst across many sports. What NASCAR says about what's on 2026 schedule, what's not and what could be in 2027

NASCAR executives Ben Kennedy and Jusan Hamilton met with the media Wednesday afternoon to discuss the 2026 schedule for the Cup, O'Reilly Auto Parts and Craftsman Truck Series, why changes were made and what isn't on the schedule. Here is what they had to say: The schedule says Round of 16, Round of 8, etc., kind of the same playoff system that you currently have. Is that a confirmation that the playoff system won't change for next year? BEN KENNEDY: 'It's not yet. I know the playoff committee has had a number of meetings over the past several months on different formats that we could look at, and they've run a handful of simulations on just various formats, collected some fan feedback. 'I know there are conversations as (recently) as a couple days ago on what the future of the playoff format looks like. Nothing to announce today. What I would say, though, is we want to make sure that we take the time to do it right, that we collect as much information as we can, and hopefully whatever this new format is, if there is a new format, it's something that will last a long time. 'We want to be thoughtful and diligent about it, make sure we make the right decisions and moves and give both our fans and our competitors something that they can be really proud of going forward. More to come on that in the future.' Dustin Long, With the All-Star Race moving to Dover, a track that doesn't have lights, will that be a day event or will lights be brought it to run it at night? BEN KENNEDY: 'More than likely, it will be a day race at Dover. We worked with Speedway Motorsports on the shift there. Part of it was taking into consideration whether moving them into May felt like it was a better time of year from at least a heat perspective, and we considered a handful of other tracks as well. We felt like that one was the best. A number of considerations just as we think about each one of these moves, and Dover was the best option that we had for '26.' Could there ever be an All-Star Race that includes not only Cup drivers but NASCAR drivers from the other national series? BEN KENNEDY: 'I think anything is on the table. For now, we're focused on the Cup Series. Having our biggest names and our biggest stars compete in All-Star weekend, we feel like it's been important. 'We've seen this at North Wilkesboro for the past few years having companion events with it, and to have O'Reilly and the Craftsman Truck Series on the same weekend in Dover gives us the ability to highlight all three series. 'As it relates to other drivers coming and competing in those series, we haven't necessarily gotten to that bridge yet, but I would never put anything out of consideration.' Portland is off the schedule in 2026 for the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series, is that something you're trying to change for 2027? BEN KENNEDY: 'We'd love to be in the Pacific Northwest at some point. I think we've said this a couple times: We're always looking at new markets we could go and explore in the future, and the Pacific Northwest has always been high on our list. Whether that's the Seattle area, the Portland region, or I would even toss Colorado, even though it's not on the West Coast, Colorado is another market that we would like to go and explore in the future.' What continues to be the roadblock for a NASCAR race back in Montreal? BEN KENNEDY: 'We'd love to be both north of the border and south of the border in the future and potentially beyond that at some point. We've had a handful of conversations with a few groups north of the border interested in a national series race. We haven't been able to deliver that yet. 'But I would say that is something at that we're taking a look at as we think about 2027 and beyond. We have some good relationships up there. I think the good news is we have experience bringing both our O'Reilly Series and our Craftsman Truck Series north of the border with a handful of promoters. Nothing to report today, obviously, but something that is high on our consideration set for '27.' Nate Ryan, What needs to be done to get Chicagoland Speedway ready for next July and its first NASCAR Cup weekend since 2019? BEN KENNEDY: 'I think the good news is it's relatively race ready, so we'll probably have to replace some of the SAFER foam. We'll probably have to put a fresh coat of paint on it, clean up some of the grandstands, renovate some of the suite areas. There's some parking areas that need to be repaved. We're going to have a long list of improvements that we'll need to make to the facility, and we'll make that well in advance of the time that we come there in July.' How did the Trucks end up as a part of the St. Pete Grand Prix street course race on the same weekend as the Indy Car Series? JUSAN HAMILTON: 'Obviously we've been doing more street course racing on our end. It's a great opportunity to work with our partners at Green Savoree who promote that event and bring the Truck Series to a market that we're not currently in. I mentioned how big the Tampa St. Pete market is as far as fan interest on the NASCAR side. 'Also with our partners at Fox, Fox obviously broadcasts both the Craftsman Truck Series for the full year and the IndyCar Series as well. There's a lot of collaboration that takes place anytime we link together on joint events like that. It's also another opportunity for us to learn and grow with street course racing, as I mentioned.' Could there be more NASCAR/IndyCar weekends in the future? BEN KENNEDY: 'Yeah, potentially. We're going to collaborate with them on the St. Pete race next year, and the good news is we have such a good relationship with Doug (Boles), with Bud (Denker), with Roger Penske), the entire team over at IndyCar, and there are a lot of synergies as well, with them having Fox as a broadcast partner, we have Fox for the first part of our season. There are a lot of natural opportunities for us to work closer together, in particular on some of those races in the season. 'Something that we'll continue to explore with them. I think St. Pete next year will be a good kind of case study for us. We've had examples of it, of racing at Indianapolis in the past, and even though we didn't have as big of a presence there, IndyCar going to Iowa for a number of years, they came and raced at Richmond for a handful of years as well. 'Really important for us to continue to have the relationship. I wouldn't be surprised if there were more opportunities for us to work closer together with them.'
