Texas Gov. Greg Abbott orders arrest of Democratic lawmakers who fled over redistricting
'Texas House Democrats abandoned their duty to Texans,' Abbott said in an Aug. 4 press release announcing the move. 'By fleeing the state, Texas House Democrats are holding hostage critical legislation to aid flood victims and advance property tax relief. There are consequences for dereliction of duty."
It's unclear whether and how Texas law enforcement will be able to work with out-of-state law enforcement to execute the arrest order, which Abbott said is designed to ensure the missing Democrats comply with civil arrest warrants issued by state Republican lawmakers in an 85-6 vote earlier in the day. Those warrants only apply within state lines.
More than 50 state Democratic lawmakers fled Aug. 3 in the political power struggle. Many went to the Chicago area in Illinois, where Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker greeted them. Others went to Boston, Massachusetts and Albany, New York.
At the urging of President Donald Trump, Texas Republicans have proposed changing congressional districts to give their party an assist in next year's midterm elections. The revamped map could allow Republicans to flip as many as five Democratic congressional seats.
The Democrats are already facing a $500 fine for each day they are out of the state. The penalty was created after state Democrats in 2021 made a similar move to protest new voting restrictions. However, supporters such as Pritzker, a billionaire, and U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a star Democratic fundraiser from Texas, have offered to help the fleeing Democrats.
Abbott said that his arrest order, which called on the Texas Department Of Public Safety to take action, will remain in place until every missing Democratic member has been brought to the Texas Capitol.

Ward 2 has a new representative on the Columbia City Council
Vera Elwood will step in and represent Ward 2 after being elected to the position by ward voters Aug. 5. Elwood had 1,480 votes, while opponent Ken Rice had 1,130 votes in unofficial results posted on the Boone County Clerk's web page. She will complete the roughly two-year remainder of the term following the resignation of Lisa Meyer due to health reasons. There also were ballot questions on a countywide debt levy tax freeze for seniors and tax levy increase question for the Hartsburg R-8 school district. "We care about our neighbors, we care about the people living across the street from us and across the ward from us, we care about issues at the city level like worker pay wages, we care about infrastructure and city policies and we are going to continue to care and fight for all Columbians," she said. With her election, it does mean she no longer will chair the Columbia Disabilities Commission or serve on the Commission on Cultural Affairs. Had she not won, she said she would have continued on these city council advisory boards. Rice said his campaign resonated with people across the political spectrum of Columbia. He plans to continue to be active in local affairs, either speaking at Columbia Public Schools board meetings about financial transparency, or finding a role on city council advisory committees like the Office of Violence Prevention Advisory Committee or the Finance Advisory and Audit Committee. NYC gunman who blamed NFL for hiding brain injury dangers suffered from sports concussion, mom said
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The mother of the man who killed four people at a Manhattan office tower home to the NFL before taking his own life told 911 dispatchers during a 2022 incident when he threatened to kill himself that he suffered from a sports-related concussion and other issues, new information released by Las Vegas police Tuesday revealed. Shane Tamura, 27, had a documented history of mental health problems and carried a handwritten note in his wallet when he carried out the shooting that claimed he had chronic traumatic encephalopathy, known at CTE, investigators said. He accused the football league of hiding the dangers of brain injuries linked to contact sports. His mother told the dispatchers on Sept. 12, 2022, that her son was also struggling with depression, chronic migraines and insomnia; was taking sleeping pills and smoked marijuana; and kept a gun in his backpack. It was one of two incidents that led to Tamura being admitted to hospitals for mental health crises. 'He said he's going to kill himself,' she said in the recorded 911 call. 'He didn't say he made a plan, he just said he just can't take it anymore.' Tamura's mother placed the call from outside a Budget Suites Motel and reported that her son was threatening to hurt himself. 'He just started crying and slamming things and said I'm making him worse, so I said, 'I'll step outside,'' she said. 'I don't want you to be upset, but I'm afraid to leave.' She told dispatchers she would wait in the stairwell because she did not want Tamura to know she had called the police. Tamura was committed to a hospital again in 2024 after calling his mother and making statements about wanting to hurt himself, according to a first responder captured on body camera video released by Las Vegas police. Tamura, 27, worked at the Horseshoe Las Vegas until last week, when authorities say he drove his car to New York and carried out the shooting.
