Was there an expectation for you to attend higher education? Did you participate in any form of higher education? If yes, how did you pay for it?
Yes, from my parents and myself. I did an International Baccalaureate program in high school and every one of my classmates went on to university. As a kid, I wanted to be an actress or a hairstylist but my mum told me that my dad would not allow it and wanted me to go to university. (I still contemplate being a hairstylist).
Growing up, what kind of conversations did you have about money? Did your parent(s)/guardian(s) educate you about finances?
My dad was a chartered accountant but we didn't talk about money. I was generally a saver and would lend money to my mum, which continued into adulthood at different points. Both of my parents struggled with managing money effectively.
What was your first job and why did you get it?
I worked as a grocery store cashier when I was 15 and enjoyed it a lot! I still remember some of the PLU codes for fruits and veggies.
Did you worry about money growing up?
Yes, constantly. I worried about what would happen if my dad lost his job and whether there would be enough money for school. This never happened, but I worried constantly.
Do you worry about money now?
Yes, I still worry a lot. I live in a high cost of living area and although I make a good income and save as much as I can, I still feel behind. I identify as queer and have a female partner, so I think about the cost of fertility treatments if I have biological children (and I am currently on a waitlist to freeze my eggs).
At what age did you become financially responsible for yourself and do you have a financial safety net?
22 (when I graduated from university). Currently, I do not think my parents would be able to provide much financial support if I found myself in a situation where this was needed — and I would not want to ask. In a worst case scenario, I would cash out savings or draw from a line of credit. This was a big motivation behind purchasing disability insurance in addition to what I have available through my work.
Do you or have you ever received passive or inherited income? If yes, please explain.
Yes, I received substantial support from my parents while attending university for my bachelor's degree (about $12,000 per year for four and a half years). This paid for half of my undergraduate degree. I paid the other half with various part-time jobs.
Day One: Wednesday
6:50 a.m. — I wake up to the sound of my beloved cat, L., meowing for breakfast. We (cough, me) recently started portioning out her food because the vet says she is overweight. She does not like this and has been demanding breakfast earlier each day. After feeding my queen, I lay in bed on my phone for about an hour before dragging myself out of bed. I put on my 'Hold on, let me overthink this' shirt and a pair of black Zara jeans. Brush teeth quickly, wash face, deodorant and out the door.
9:30 a.m. — Arrive at a work meeting to discuss a challenging team situation from yesterday. A lot of people are still feeling it, including myself. I started a new job in December and I've been struggling with it. I've never made this much money before, but the work itself is slow and the emotional cost of the situation is getting higher.
12:30 p.m. — Leave the meeting site, which is conveniently near Costco. I go in with the immediate task of securing a hot dog ($1.56, thank you Costco for the affordable lunch). I walk around browsing and snapping up samples (most yummy is chocolate mini-eggs). I buy Japanese BBQ sauce that I've been looking for and a bag of Sour Patch bunnies, which will be a gift for someone, most likely my sister ($21.88). $23.44
1:30 p.m. — Arrive home for WFH afternoon. I set myself up outside on the patio and my chatty L. meows all of her feelings to the neighbours. I consider whether we need to find an animal communicator. We go inside for quiet time.
3:30 p.m. — My dad calls for a chat. He lives in a retirement home in another province and had to go into a care facility at a younger age (63) for significant physical health and mobility concerns. Cognitively, he is sharp as a tack and wants to talk politics, sprinkled with jokes about his day-to-day life at the retirement home. L. meows to say hi while I talk to him. After the call, we are back to emails.
5 p.m. — I shower off the day, and commence a Netflix marathon viewing of Temptation Island. Hello, reminder from my childhood glory days of reality TV. I think about how different it is now — no waiting a week for the next episode — and I think about how this impedes delayed gratification.
10 p.m. — I make a late-night Girl Dinner of a fried egg, toast, and apple with peanut butter. Dessert is nacho chips and salsa.

Day Two: Thursday
8:30 a.m. — Rise and shine from the couch (where I fell asleep watching Temptation Island). L. also slept in. Eat nacho chips and salsa for breakfast. Catch up on emails and messages. Work from home this morning and get distracted by cleaning the oven and microwave (for the first time since I cannot remember when). I try this cleaning product recipe (baking soda, dish soap, and hydrogen peroxide) and it is okay, but I don't think I'll make it again.
12:30 p.m. — Arrive at a coffee shop to meet my coworker for a meeting — except I arrive at the wrong location. Drive to the right coffee shop and arrive 15 minutes late with a huge line. No coffee, no cookie, but could this be a sign it's a zero spend day? (Yes, is the answer.)
1:30 p.m. — We check out one of our new office spaces and it has been beautifully decorated by the staff onsite. I am blown away by the shift in energy!
3 p.m. — I arrive home and am ready for lunch. I make two fried eggs, two toasts, stir-fry veggies and fries, plus a spinach, raspberry and banana smoothie. I am a better person after eating.
3:30 p.m. — See a message from my realtor that we can go look at a listing I'm interested in tonight at 6:30 p.m. Exciting! I continue messaging my coworkers and planning things for the week.
4:30 p.m. — The work day is done and I watch Miracles From Heaven on Netflix. So many feels. My sister texts that she is struggling and needs help (she is in another province with my nearly three-year-old niece). We FaceTime and chat through my niece's evening routine. We brush our teeth together and sing a song over the phone. I tell my niece to give my sis 'squeezes' (hugs) and I think this helps her feel better.
6:30 p.m. — Walk to the listing (an apartment down the street). The cherry blossoms are in full bloom! I like the unit and it's lovely in a lot of ways, but there is this feeling 'not quite' as I walk home. I will spend my life savings another day.
7:30 p.m. — Barbecue flavour chips seems like a responsible dinner. Yum. Take a bath, catch up on texts, and book a rental car for my visit to see family later in the month.
9 p.m. — Time for a 'proper' dinner: salami sandwich with mayo on sourdough bread. I start reading a new book (my goal is one book a month): Love At First Spite. Stave off urges to go get a McFlurry. Barely.

Day Three: Friday
7 a.m. — Wake up early because I have my last session of training this morning (EMDR — amazing training but emotionally activating). Brush teeth and run out the door. My coworker picks me up and I revel in being a passenger princess. We finish the training around 11 a.m. and drive to work.
12:30 p.m. — Lunch for a colleague's birthday. We eat sushi, takoyaki, and birthday cake. Big chat with my coworkers and then my coworker drives me home.
3 p.m. — I'm finished for the day and I take a nap to celebrate Friday. Wake up around 4:30 p.m. and go to the grocery store for lemonade, a pepperoni cheese stick, ice cream, and popcorn twists. I am a beacon of health for dinner. $19.33
7 p.m. — In Canada, our oldest department store, The Bay, is closing down. A friend's girlfriend was able to get two of their logo wool blankets at cost since she works for a supplier. There are three of us and two blankets, so a random draw is suggested. I am not chosen but my friend offers for me to take her blanket to save money. Initially I am excited but then I start reading about the colonial history of The Bay. I went to an Indigenous training recently and I feel ignorant at my lack of ability to make connections. The fact that it is a blanket makes me feel extra sick. I message my friends my concern and offer to pay for the blanket but let them know that I don't feel comfortable keeping it. We reach an agreement that I will buy it for now with the option of my friend to pay me back when her finances settle or I will resell it. I call my girlfriend J. for support and ask her if we can get bubble tea tomorrow if my friends now hate me. She says we can get it either way. $165.27

7 a.m. — Wake up early (this happens to me a lot when I perceive conflict or feel like I've let people down). My friend chat is quiet and I'm convinced they hate me. I force myself to go for a walk to return my library books before heading into work at the private practice clinic. I run into one of my coworkers on my walk and she gives me a hug which is really sweet.
9:30 a.m. — I feel better temporarily after the walk. But on my drive to work, I continue overthinking, wishing I had stayed quiet about my feelings and then dealt with the blanket on my own. My last message to the chat was a bid for reassurance that hasn't come yet and I know the person I really need reassurance from is myself. I get a gruyère sandwich from an Italian grocery store near my work ($9.40, but I have a gift card). I have several client appointments in a row so this will function as brunch for me and allow me to take my medication earlier in the day. Zoloft + therapy has been so helpful for my anxiety. $9.40 (Expensed)
1 p.m. — My friends are sweet and remind me I'm not hated. I feel better but also because I had three reasonably good sessions. My new job has been super slow and it has been dispiriting to not have enough work to do. Having private practice on the side has been a really big help. I have a break between my third and fourth sessions and look at mistint paints (I want to find one to paint wooden deck furniture). No luck at the store, but I do leave with ideas. Go back to work and lay on a beanbag chair until my last client comes.
4:30 p.m. — Get gas on my way home because it is 20 cents cheaper a litre (gas has been varying so much here). Usually I am a fill-it-up-when-it's-almost-empty girl, which my friends justifiably tease me for, but this feels so adult. $45.46
6 p.m. — J. comes over. I make us a vegan dinner of sweet Korean lentils, okra, and rice. J. is vegan and it was easier than expected to learn how to cook for her. It's my first-ever relationship that has felt healthy and secure. We both had hard weeks, so our evening is really simple. After dinner, we walk to get bubble tea. J. treats since I treated last weekend. She gets oat milk tea with pearls and I get a taro slush with pearls (it is phenomenal and J. seems really into mine, too). When we get home, J. traces my back with her fingers for a looong time (one of my fave things and I feel so taken care of when she does it) and then it's her turn. This leads to sex and then we fall asleep snuggled up for a little bit. At midnight, J. goes home and I go back to bed.

6:50 a.m. — Wake up to my cat's demands for breakfast. Feed her and struggle to go back to bed. Look up cat auto-feeders, then read erotica for about an hour and before falling back to sleep.
11:25 a.m. — Wake up for good and realize the time — wild for me, but nice. Respond to messages and buy a ticket to my friend M.'s comedy open mic show which is later in the week. Start reading Let Them by Mel Robbins (aptly timed for me). Stay inside too long but eventually get out for a short walk. $17.31
4 p.m. — Order a super belated birthday gift for my friend M. It is a notebook with raccoons that says 'Trashy Thoughts', and a multicolour click pen with dogs. We do small gifts and I think she will like these. $17.90
6:30 p.m. — Meet friends for hotpot. There are five of us and it takes a while to get a table. This restaurant serves individual hotpot bowls. I order the veggie bowl and it is just okay for me. But I am glad to see everyone and catch up. My friend B. orders a very spicy hotpot and lets me try his broth. I immediately start coughing and this seems to cheer him up. $25
8:45 p.m. — Drop by J.'s place to chat (I asked her if I could come chat about my feelings and she is very gracious to make time for me). She had a hard day and I find out that she experienced a family loss. We talk and then hold each other. I love her a lot and she is a gem. But I worry that I will overthink things in a misperceiving way or self-sabotage (this is probably down to past bad relationships experiences and a tad too much relational anxiety).

6 a.m. — I wake up to my cat's readiness for breakfast. Feed her and go back to sleep until 7:30 a.m. Wake up with a zest for cleaning (where did this come from?) and tackle the bathroom and the mountain of clean clothes on the floor.
10 a.m. — Meeting in person with colleagues until 1 p.m. I get McDonald's afterwards (McDouble, small fries, small iced tea) and it is delicious ($6.22). I get Timbits for dessert ($3.19). $9.41
2 p.m. — I was supposed to meet up with my friend and her daughters, but she loses her phone and doesn't reply back in time. I catch up on emails before seeing a private client at 4:30 p.m. I listen to a webinar on my way home from work called The Case for Taking Sides in Couples Therapy and I wonder if I am the problem in my relationship. I still feel unsettled, even though J. is amazing. I asked my best friend K. if we can do a call tomorrow and we confirm a time.
7 p.m. — On my drive home, I stock up on snacks from the dollar store (three flavours of chips). Today feels extra unhealthy. Then I find out that a friend of mine has moved five hours away without the chance to say goodbye. Her husband was in police training so I knew this was coming, but I didn't know exactly when. I adore her baby boy and I feel sad I couldn't say goodbye to them. I debate saying something to her, but decide not to and find peace in that. I know she had to move super quickly after her husband's grad and think that maybe I can visit her in the summer. Mercury was supposed to come out of retrograde today, but the residual yuck still feels there. $6.04
8 p.m. — I force myself to make dinner, which is spaghetti and meatballs. I clean my kitchen and journal. I play ball with L. and she demonstrates her athletic prowess. I think she was a soccer player in a previous life.
10 p.m. — Phone call with J. for about an hour and then a night-time walk. I check my mail (I love mail!) and realize something for another person down the street was delivered to me. I walk down to the correct building to deliver it. Give L. extra food as a deterrent to a 6 a.m. wake up call — let's hope!

8 a.m. — Wake up and today will be a WFH day. L. wants to play ball again, so we do. My first meeting is at 9:15 a.m. for about an hour. Today is really quiet without anything else scheduled after. I have readings I can do and catching up on emails, etc., but I am struggling with the lack of work right now. I ask my colleague who lives nearby if she wants to take a walk.
11 a.m. — Meet with my colleague to check out a nearby fundraiser book sale. She brings me soup made by her husband. It's the last day of the book sale and it's $10 for a bag of books. We each get a bag and lunch (the yummiest egg and cheese sandwich ever; $8 including tip). On my way out, I buy three 50/50 tickets ($10). $28
1:15 — Phone call with my best friend K., who is validating and supportive. She listens to me and we do a quick catchup, but will connect later in the week for a Zoom book club (we meet with another friend and are working through a workbook called Be Kind to Yourself).
4 p.m. — Take a nap. Be lazy and spend a lot of time on the couch this evening. I definitely need to up my activity levels.
9 p.m. — Heat up the soup from my coworker's husband — his food is magical, too — such a good food day! It's a lentil veggie soup and I eat it with buttered sourdough toast. I am craving chocolate so I walk to the store to get mini eggs which is the perfect end to the day. $2.63

'It was really interesting to track my spending this week and made me more aware — not only of money, but also what I eat, my activity levels and mental wellbeing. I don't feel great about the blanket but I see it as a good learning moment to become more aware of what I buy and how sneaky colonialism can be (in many different forms). I've decided that when I get it from my friend, I will re-sell it and donate the proceeds to a local Indigenous organization, and that feels right for me. Reviewing the week makes me feel so grateful for the people in my life, who are so special to me, and for all that I have.'

Lucid Stock: Can Gravity Production Volume Solve All Problems?
Key Points The EV maker's second quarter fell short of Wall Street estimates. The loss of regulatory credit sales is a blow to Lucid and other EV makers. Lucid is now drastically accelerating production of the Gravity SUV. 10 stocks we like better than Lucid Group › Despite coming into the second quarter with momentum after a number of consecutive quarterly sales records, Lucid Group (NASDAQ: LCID) was the latest electric vehicle (EV) maker to pump the brakes on expectations. Lucid, among its competitors, is driving through tricky waters when it comes to navigating tariffs, removal of the federal EV tax credit, and the loss of regulatory credit sales. One saying rings true for Lucid though: Volume solves all problems. More specifically, Gravity SUV production volume will solve all problems. Here's why. Q2 recap and speed bumps Automakers around the globe are navigating choppy waters when it comes to increasing costs due to tariffs. Lucid started things off by trimming its full-year production outlook, making Lucid only the latest automaker casualty to pump the brakes after tariff and trade policy changes. The automaker now expects to produce between 18,000 and 20,000 EVs in 2025, down at the midpoint from its earlier forecast for 20,000 vehicles. Revenue of $259 million fell short of Wall Street estimates, as well as its adjusted loss of $0.24 per share, which was worse than the $0.22 per share loss consensus estimate. Regulatory credit loss Adding to Lucid's pain is the loss of regulatory credit sales. Essentially, automakers that produce EVs were given credits for their production, while automakers producing vehicles that didn't meet emissions standards were fined. One way to avoid the fine was to simply purchase regulatory credits from automakers with a surplus, such as EV-only automakers like Lucid. That was until the Trump administration removed the fine for vehicles not meeting emissions standards, effectively and immediately removing any incentive to purchase regulatory credits, shutting off a valuable chunk of business for EV makers such as Lucid. Volume solves problems What Lucid needs is a good dose of volume! More specifically, Lucid desperately needs to ramp up the production of its Gravity SUV, which has been in low production since launching. It's important because the $7,500 federal EV tax credit is set to disappear on Sept. 30, effectively pulling forward demand from those on the fence to get in before the discount is removed. That means there will be a roughly equal power lull during the fourth quarter, so the sooner the Gravity is producing at full capacity, the better. Unfortunately, things haven't gone exactly to plan. "This is something I've said before, and I say it again, we're not where we want to be with the Gravity at this time of the year. We actually wanted to be ahead, making significant ... progress every day," Lucid CEO Marc Winterhoff said in an interview with Yahoo! Finance shortly after Q2 earnings. On the bright side, Lucid does expect production to ramp up drastically during the second half of the year. But to meet its lofty goal of 18,000 to 20,000 vehicles it would need a serious acceleration. Consider that Lucid produced only 6,075 vehicles during the first half of the year. To meet expectations Lucid would have to pull forward the launching of a second shift at its Arizona Factory. What it all means One of the major developments to watch with Lucid is the company's fight to become gross profit positive, which rival Rivian Automotive accomplished in both the fourth and first quarter. The problem is investors might not see desired progress in gross profits during 2025, depending on the countermeasures Lucid unleashes during the fourth quarter to help offset the lull following the pull-ahead in demand. Those discounts and incentives can be costly. Ultimately, despite a less than glamorous second-quarter report, Lucid still has momentum and is well-positioned with production of its Gravity accelerating as we speak. But long-term investors would be wise to anticipate a bumpy few quarters as the industry, and consumers, grapple with changes in pricing due to tariffs and trade policy. Ford's $5 Billion Model T Moment Aims To Turn EV Operation Profitable
Ford Motor Co. CEO Jim Farley announces a new electric vehicle platform and assembly system at the Louisville Assembly Plant on August 11. Ford Motor Co. Less than two weeks after announcing its electric vehicle unit lost $1.3 billion during the second quarter and expected to lose billions more this year, Ford Motor Co. now plans to invest around $5 billion to reset its EV program with more affordable vehicles produced more efficiently, at lower cost, the automaker announced Monday. The key to the strategy is reinventing the process Ford first invented 122 years ago that changed the way vehicles have been built ever since—the assembly line. It's what CEO Jim Farley is calling the company's 'Model T moment,' referring to the vehicle that rolled off that first assembly line. In essence, it's a major do-over for the company's EV operation. 'Nobody wants to see another good college try by a Detroit automaker to make an affordable vehicle that ends up with idled plants, layoffs and uncertainty,' said Farley in a statement. 'So, this has to be a good business. From Day One, we knew there was no incremental path to success. We empowered a tiny skunkworks team three time zones away from Detroit. We reinvented the moving assembly line. And we are on a path to be the first automaker to make prismatic LFP batteries in the U.S. We will not rely on imports.' A new line of what Ford describes as affordable, electric, software-defined vehicles will be based on the Ford Universal EV Platform, will be built on the company's reinvention of the assembly line it calls the Ford Universal Production System. The initial location to be converted to the new system is Ford's Louisville Assembly Plant where the first vehicle will be a midsize, five-seat, four-door electric pickup truck. It's due reaching customers in 2027 with a starting price Ford estimates at about $30,000. Final pricing and other specs will be announced closer to its launch. However, the company offered a few tidbits including expected zero-to-60 mph 'as fast as a Mustang EcoBoost, with more downforce,' and more passenger room than the latest model Toyota RAV4. It will also include a frunk, bed, exportable power and will be capable of Ford's Blue Cruise automated driving technology, chief operating officer Kumar Galhotra revealed in an online media briefing before the formal announcement. The new platform and production system work hand-in-hand. The Ford Universal EV Platform reduces parts by 20% versus a typical vehicle, with 25% fewer fasteners, 40% fewer workstations dock-to-dock in the plant and 15% faster assembly time, according to Galhotra. A cobalt-free and nickel-free lithium-iron phosphate, or LFP, battery pack is a structural sub-assembly that also serves as the vehicle's floor. Where the traditional assembly line is basically a glorified conveyer belt where workers attach parts as the vehicle rolls by, or stops briefly, Ford is calling the Universal Production System an 'assembly tree.' 'Instead of a linear assembly line, it will have three independent branches, front, the rear and the structural battery,' explained Galhotra. 'So the battery itself is structure is critical to the structure of the vehicle and then the all of these branches come together at the end, when we integrate the interior, seats, carpet, consoles, etc, all of these branches run in parallel. So imagine, instead of one line, these three lines running in parallel and coming together at the end. Large single-piece aluminum unicastings replace dozens of smaller parts, enabling the front and rear of the vehicle to be assembled separately. To improve ergonomics for line workers parts travel down the assembly tree to operators in a kit that includes all fasteners, scanners and power tools required for the job. The company expects the new process to enable the new electric truck to be assembled 40% faster than current vehicles being produced at the Louisville plant. To make this all happen, Ford says it's investing nearly $2 billion to produce the new electric pickup truck. The project is also being supported by incentives from the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority. The $2 billion to build the new production system is in addition to the previously announced $3 billion investment in Ford's BlueOval Battery Park in Marshall, Michigan which will start producing prismatic LFP batteries for the midsize electric pickup truck next year. Between the two investments, Ford says it's helping to secure nearly 4,000 direct jobs. It's all a multi-billion dollar gamble by Ford that by more efficiently producing EVs that are more affordable in body styles customers desire, it can start making money on electric vehicles for the first time. The automaker currently offers three EV models: the F-150 Lightning pickup truck, Mustang Mach-E and E-Transit. Ford's announcement comes a little more than six weeks before the $7,500 federal tax incentive on qualified EVs ends, further challenging the affordability of those vehicles for some. 'The elimination of government-backed incentives and the emergence of new tariff headwinds signal a more volatile phase for the industry. The training wheels are coming off, and the transition to electrification will no longer be buoyed by incentives alone,' wrote director of industry insights for Cox Automotive, Stephanie Valdez Streaty, in a recent report. 'Automakers and retailers alike will need to navigate this next chapter with agility, as the EV landscape becomes more complex and demanding of true market resilience.' It all adds up to compelling reasons for Ford to invoke its Model T moment. When Henry Ford began selling the first mass-produced car he told customers they could have any color they wanted, as long as it was black. More than a century later, the company that invented the assembly line is hoping the re-invented version of it, combined with a simpler platform, will provide enough choices at affordable prices to turn the bottom line for its EV unit from red…to the Model T's only color. A Week In Copenhagen On A $98,700 Salary
Welcome to Money Diaries where we are tackling the ever-present taboo that is money. We're asking real people how they spend their hard-earned money during a seven-day period — and we're tracking every last dollar. Today: a strategy manager who makes $98,700 per year and who spends some of her money this week on a book written by her friend. Editor's Note: Prices converted from DKK to USD via Google. Occupation: Strategy manager Industry: Technology Age: 29 Location: Copenhagen Salary: $98,700 before taxes and deductions (approximately 40%) + around $10,000 per year from my investment property. Assets: Checking accounts: $11,400; savings accounts: $35,000; investments: $26,700; pensions: $26,500; property: $170,000; loan: $3,500 (this is the amount left on a loan to my mother, which she is slowly repaying). Debt: Mortgage: $66,195 Paycheck Amount (Monthly): $5,018 Pronouns: She/her Monthly Expenses Housing Costs: $2,150 — I rent a one-bedroom apartment in the suburbs. This is a huge cost, but after sharing for many years, I really value having my own space and finally living like an adult! Unemployment Insurance: $236.55 (quarterly) Was there an expectation for you to attend higher education? Did you participate in any form of higher education? If yes, how did you pay for it? I attended an 'elitist' public school where higher education was deemed as mandatory and only top universities were discussed. I did five years at a good university in my home country. My family has never put any pressure on me and gave me full independence in choosing my academic path, plus I don't think they fully understood the system. My studies were free as I received a need-based scholarship that covered tuition fees, and I lived at home during the whole five years. I only paid for living expenses during my semester abroad, using inheritance money. Growing up, what kind of conversations did you have about money? Did your parent(s) educate you about finances? I remember my dad was quite frugal and for him to have specific rules —like never spending more than $20 on shoes, and meals out also being max $20 — which stuck with me for a while. We did not talk overly about it, but it wasn't taboo either. After my dad passed away when I was a child, my mother dipped into my inheritance to pay for things like school lunches or clothes, so we got to discuss the cost of things quite early on. I also lent her around $20,000 when I was 18 so she could keep her current apartment. When I was 15, she got me my first debit card, and I started paying for all hygiene, clothing, and beauty products myself. Let's say it was a very hands-on financial education. What was your first job and why did you get it? I babysat kids in the neighbourhood and received around $12 per hour for it. I used this money mainly for going out. Did you worry about money growing up? I never worried about money growing up as my parents did an excellent job in managing it and making us feel secure. I knew we had less than my friends, but it rarely bothered me. Things changed when my dad passed away and we had to downsize our lifestyle and move to public housing. But even when my mom (then single) was at risk of losing her job, she protected us well from all financial worries. Do you worry about money now? I live in an expensive city and being single is costly, so I am worried about what would happen if I were to lose my job. I try to save a substantial amount every month and to spend mindfully, while still enjoying life. At what age did you become financially responsible for yourself and do you have a financial safety net? I left the family home at 23 when I emigrated for the first time. I have been financially independent since then. I could move back with my mother if I needed, however she made it really clear it would be a very temporary solution. My grandparents would help if I asked, but I would never, as they do not have much. Do you or have you ever received passive or inherited income? If yes, please explain. I have inherited $110,000 when my dad passed away, and $70,000 when my aunt died five years ago. I'm grateful for the safety and independence it brought me, but I would trade the traumatic childhood that came with it in a second. I used some of the inheritance to pay for big ticket items such as the apartment deposit, my driving license, and laser eye surgery. It still doesn't feel like 'real' money to me. Day One: Thursday 7:20 a.m. — I wake up before my alarm — the sun rises early at this time of the year and I have not yet purchased blackout curtains. Get ready and go to work by taking my bike with me on the train, purposelessly swearing against the strong wind while cycling. $3.38 9 a.m. — Arrive at work and have a slow start getting breakfast of an apple and a few cookies and catching up with some colleagues. There are only a few of us in Denmark, but the atmosphere in the office is very relaxed. Despite my company being male dominated, I do enjoy working there a lot. It can be challenging at times being both the only woman in the office and one of the youngest, but overall it's grand. I spend the morning making some progress on a few projects I am running. 12:30 p.m. — I break for a quick lunch of marinated chicken, zucchini, and quinoa. I bring my own lunch — we have a canteen on site, but I don't go often enough for it to be worth it. I steal too many chocolates and some more fruit from our kitchen before going back to my desk. Go for a short walk during the afternoon as the sun is shining and it's helpful to get ideas flowing. 4 p.m. — Leave work to attend a painting class with my friend D.! I purchased tickets a few weeks ago. The class was disappointing, but I had a good catch up with her and I love unwinding doing creative activities. 8:15 p.m. — Pit stop at the fancy supermarket to grab a frozen pizza for dinner. I spend the evening on the phone with my mom and catching up on reality TV. Go to bed around 11 p.m. $6.50 Daily Total: $9.88 Day Two: Friday 7:20 a.m. — Wake up to my alarm and get ready in 20 minutes to go to the gym. I have just joined a new CrossFit gym, it is humbling but I enjoy the process. There was an offer for the summer, where I paid only one month and could train for three. I am not sure yet if I will extend past that date. 9:15 a.m. — Back at home, log on with breakfast of rhubarb compote, walnuts, and a latte. Work is very flexible, so I can work from everywhere as long as I travel when required, around five times per year. I take full advantage of this setup. 10:20 a.m. — My IKEA delivery arrives! I moved to this place two months ago with very little furniture and I am still in the process of furnishing the place. Unfortunately, the sisal rug I've bought is too big for the place. I have tried to put it in all sorts of positions and sadly concluded that I'll need to return it. 11:30 a.m. — Proceed to grocery shopping and buy a lot (avocado, spinach, ginger, garlic, lemon, scallions, soy milk, Greek yogurt, oyster sauce, peanut butter, dark chocolate, granola, crisps, chickpeas, cucumber, chicken schnitzel, shrimps, frozen fruit, and bread). Lunch is a salad of everything I can find in the fridge, plus some chocolate and a coffee. $59.93 4 p.m. — End of the work week! I go out and pick up two copies of my friend's book that I had ordered at the library! She published it in my home country, and it got translated across the world. I am so proud — I plan on keeping a copy for myself and gifting the other one to a friend's child. $15.62 6 p.m. — I have an early dinner of schnitzel, zucchini, and bread. I am not especially hungry, but I eat to avoid buying takeaway later on. 6:45 p.m. — I meet up with D. in the city center. It turns out the event we intended to attend is guest list only, so we settle on chilling on the quays. I grab an overpriced (as most things in this city) yet delicious lemonade. Have a lovely time catching up! Summers in Copenhagen are the best. $9.24 9 p.m. — I cycle back home and get ready for the night. Read until 11 p.m., then light out. Daily Total: $84.79 Day Three: Saturday 7:20 a.m. — Wake up and jump into leggings and a sports bra. Get ready quickly and am out of the door by 7:45 a.m. 8:30 a.m. — Attend a spinning class. I booked credits when the studio opened months ago, as there was a huge discount. I don't think I will continue to go there once I've run out as it is quite far from where I live now — around 30 minutes cycling each way — and the irony is not lost on me that it takes more time commuting than actually exercising. 10 a.m. — Back home, breakfast of yogurt and granola. Vacuum, clean the place, shower, and make a lunch of vegan pesto pasta. I am always amazed by the amount of time it takes to maintain my place in decent order. 1 p.m. — I meet up with my friend G. and we cycle together to the park. We lived in the same country before but only met in Copenhagen a year or so ago! A friend in common put us in touch, and she has since become one of my best friends here. We chill for a few hours, making the most of the gorgeous weather. Grab an ice cream, it really hits the spot! $6.26 4:30 p.m. — Leave for a first date with a guy from Hinge. The plan is to have drinks in the park. I haven't dated for a while as I always find it deceiving, but I still give it a shot from time to time. Stop en route for a few snacks and a wine opener; he'll bring wine. We end up chatting for a long time and even get kicked out from the first park as it's closing, so we go to a second one. He is nice and our values seem aligned. I would go for a second date with him but try not to get carried away. $18.71 12:20 a.m. — Time to go home, walk for 20 minutes. Go to bed immediately and fall asleep around 1 a.m. Day Four: Sunday 9 a.m. — Wake up after a not-so-good night of sleep. I barely drink these days, so a couple of glasses hit me hard! It's just not worth the hangover for me. Slow morning of coffee and YouTube in bed before finding the strength to get out of bed to make and eat pancakes. 10:30 a.m. — G. rings me; she is downstairs at a flea market! Get ready in five minutes and meet her there, where I buy a very cute necklace made of purple seashell ($3.08). While I'm out, I go to the library to return some books and borrow a couple of new ones, and buy a cute storage box from Søstrene Grene ($4.44). $7.52 12:30 p.m. — Back home, I have a frozen lunch of peas, schnitzel, and green beans. I also eat a bag of crunchy M&Ms I bought for the date and didn't eat. Chill out on my balcony doing some logic puzzles. Text the guy from Hinge saying I had a great time and following up on a conversation we had. 2 p.m. — Friends from abroad text the group chat about booking accommodation for the upcoming wedding of one of them. I have already been to five weddings this year, so it starts adding up, but I am looking forward to some good times together. Since I moved country, we don't see each other that much and I miss them, they are family to me. We haven't booked anything yet but I mentally budget $750 for accommodation and flights. 3:30 p.m. — Head out for a run in the nature reserve in the city. I end up running 15k, which I am really pleased with — it has been a while since I haven't run that far. The surroundings help, and I am so glad to live in a city where nature is so accessible. On the way back I stopped for some groceries as I was so thirsty and craving pineapple (I also got mango and lemonade). $10.32 6:30 p.m. — Home! Proceed to shower and have a lazy dinner of pineapple and defrosted bread. 8 p.m. — Go to bed very early and fall asleep reading around 9 p.m. (I am reading Long Island by Colm Toibin, which I highly recommend). Daily Total: $17.84 Day Five: Monday 7:20 a.m. — Wake up not so refreshed after the longest night of sleep! Get ready, eat a yogurt with granola, and quickly toss a salad together for lunch, using everything I have in the fridge. Again, bring my bike on the train, as my office is quite far from the station. $3.38 9 a.m. — Arrive at work and crack on. 11:15 a.m. — Short break for a coffee and some fruit to keep me going as I have my weekly team meeting at lunchtime. I love my team but we are all in different countries so we don't see each other that much. 1 p.m. — Luuunch! Eat my salad at my desk and a few office chocolates. 4:30 p.m. — Head home again, putting my bike on the train. Have an early dinner of defrosted red lentils with vegetables — a dish I batched cooked a few weeks ago. $3.38 6:20 p.m. — Time to leave for my Danish class. I have been learning Danish for eight months now, and my progress is almost nonexistent. I can barely understand it and wouldn't dare trying to speak. However, classes are free, and I feel strongly about learning the language of the country I'm living in, so I persist. Plus, I also really like my teacher and classmates. I intended to cycle there but the weather is apocalyptic just as I'm about to leave, so take the train instead (I forget to check in on the app, which you need to do here when using public transport, so this trip is free). Classes are in the city center and only five of us made it today. None of my friends are part of the lucky few, so it's gonna be a long one. 8:20 p.m. — The teacher let us go 40 minutes early, so I decide to use this time to walk home. It takes me approximately an hour and it's lovely! Copenhagen is so pretty, especially at this time of the year. 9:20 p.m. — Back home! I catch up on some reality TV and get ready to go to sleep. Day Six: Tuesday 7:20 a.m. — Wake up to my alarm after a poor night of sleep. I don't know what is going on as I usually sleep super well. Quickly get into my gym gear. 8 a.m. — CrossFit class! Today is not too difficult physically, but everything is in Danish and I understand 20% of it, so it is definitely challenging mentally. 9:20 a.m. — Back home to a message from my boss telling me he needs to give me an urgent business update. It doesn't sound good. Make breakfast of coconut pancakes — first time doing this and I love it! I simply added some coconut flakes in the batter. Also have a coffee, then start work. 10 a.m. — Boss calls. It turns out a small part of our business is being sold — I'll be sad to see them go, but it makes sense. I was expecting something more dramatic so I am relieved. 11 a.m. — Go on travel agent mode and book accommodation for the wedding in Morocco. I only have to pay a $331.22 deposit today, which is exactly my share. We book a four-bedroom riad in the city center, with breakfast and a tiny swimming pool. My friends will send me the remainder and I will pay the whole booking in a couple of months. $331.22 11 a.m. — While I'm at it, I buy flights to go to my home country in a couple of months for a family reunion. $253.35 1 p.m. — Have a lunch of salad and bread rolls with an extreme amount of peanut butter. I also finish the pineapple. Continue working for the rest of the afternoon, having a couple of meetings. 4:45 p.m. — End the work day and bring my massive carpet back to IKEA on the bus ($3.46 return). Fortunately it is only a couple of stops away from me. I buy the smaller version and a whisk while I'm there ($121.33) and get $183.25 back, so that is a nice $61.92 back in my bank account. The way back is not easier, despite the rug being smaller. ($124.79) 6:30 p.m. — Make it back and immediately install the rug. Much better, I am very pleased with how it looks. I cook udon noodles for dinner with shrimps and broccolini, delicious. I eat it while watching a true crime documentary on TV. 9:30 p.m. — Minimalist night routine and go to bed. I am asleep by 10 p.m. Daily Total: $709.36 Day Seven: Wednesday 6:45 a.m. — Wake up early, without any alarm. Spend the morning chilling in bed and finishing my book. I will work from home again today, so I enjoy the extra time. Change into night PJs to day PJs (aka comfy clothes I am slightly ashamed to go out in but I still do it anyhow). 9 a.m. — Log on into work, with the usual breakfast of Greek yogurt with granola and a coffee. 12 p.m. — Go to the supermarket as I have run out of coffee and I treat that as an emergency. Stock up on frozen veg, flour, milk, toilet paper, chicken, and coffee. I have literally two supermarkets in my building, which is both a blessing and a curse. $45.11 3 p.m. — Cheeky break to go and buy some white sewing thread to shorten my curtains. Also buy a file and nail polish. $16.46 4:15 p.m. — Go for an 8km run in my neighborhood. The weather is lovely, and the endorphins are kicking! 5 p.m. — Shower and get ready for Danish class. I have leftover udon noodles as an early dinner. 6:20 p.m. — Jump on my bike and make it on time for 6:55 p.m. This is the last class before summer holidays! I cannot wait to have two more evenings free every week. I need to find a way to keep practicing though not to lose any of my progress. 9 p.m. — Back home and I have yogurt. I do my nails: I have recently bought the equipment for doing shellac at home. It cost the price of two manicures, so I believe it was worth it. I need to perfect my technique though — the first tests were not so successful. Maybe doing it in the dark is not the best idea. 10:30 p.m. — Go to bed and fall asleep doing more of my logic puzzles. Daily Total: $61.57 The Breakdown Conclusion 'This week was a typical week for me. The travel expenses were obviously very high, but I'd rather book in advance before prices get out of control. It is also part of the cost of living abroad. I have learned that a big purchase comes up most weeks. I tend to spend a lot on groceries but I am okay with that as I don't go out that often and I enjoy quality. Overall, I am quite happy with how I spend money, even if sometimes I believe I could be more mindful and buy it right the first time rather than returning or exchanging stuff! Oh, and an update on the Hinge date: I'm still seeing him and we've had a few good dates, but I'm taking things slow as he is a bit noncommittal and I also need to figure things out.'
