E-hailing platform inDrive meets country's laws

The Star6 days ago
PETALING JAYA: E-hailing platform inDrive is now compliant with all regulatory requirements in Malaysia, says its country lead Govin Kumaar Panirsheeluam.
He said administrative issues related to e-hailing vehicle permits (EVP) had led to the recent notice by the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) to revoke inDrive's operating permits.
Govin said inDrive had since corrected the root cause of the administrative issue with assistance from Apad.
He added that the company had conducted various upgrades to its administrative systems to reduce any similar issues from happening again.
He said this included enhancing its driver verification processes, conducting stricter documentation checks and initiating internal audits to close any potential gaps related to EVP.
'inDrive is now in constant communication and sharing real time data with Apad to align procedures and strengthen the compliance framework going forward.
'To build a stronger and more resilient platform, we are reactivating and reverifying existing driver accounts while strengthening our driver support systems.
'We fully support the government's responsibility to ensure safety and order in public transport and are committed to operating with full transparency,' he said at a press conference here yesterday.
Meanwhile, inDrive Malaysia driver operations manager Azlan Anwar said stricter standard operating procedures had been enforced within the company.
'To strengthen existing safeguards, we have introduced increased layers of validation and verification to detect any inconsistencies or forged documents.
'We have also improved our onboarding journey for drivers through our inDrive academy digital e-learning platform to better train drivers on safety protocols, emergency responses and other aspects.
'This is part of our commitment to build a responsible and professional driver community,' he said.
The e-hailing platform's Asia-Pacific macroregional director Mark Tolley said the platform would continue to focus on improving and elevating its services to better serve the people.
'We understand that we didn't get it right, but we believe Malaysia is the right place for inDrive and we will continue to focus on improving and elevating our services to better serve Malaysians,' he said.
In May, Apad revoked the operating permits of e-hailing platforms – InDrive and Maxim – with an order to cease all operations in Malaysia by July 24 for allegedly operating illegally.
Apad then announced that the two companies would be allowed to resume their operations on July 23, subject to a review every three months.

Bursa opens higher on US tariff cut boost

KUALA LUMPUR : Bursa Malaysia rebounded from two days of losses to open higher on Friday, supported by improved sentiment following the US move to reduce the tariff rate on Malaysian imports. Washington earlier announced a 19% tariff on Malaysian goods, effective Aug 1, 2025. At 9.10am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 8.83 points, or 0.58%, to 1,522.08 from Thursday's close of 1,513.25. The benchmark index had opened 6.62 points higher at 1,519.87. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Thong Pak Leng said the lower-than-expected tariff is positive news for Malaysia. 'We believe investors will be happier to get this news. Hence sentiment should improve, and we revise our FBM KLCI target today to within the range of 1,510 to 1,530,' he added. Earlier today, US President Donald Trump also said there would be no tariff if Malaysia, or Malaysian companies, chose to build or manufacture products within the US. Since April, Malaysia has been negotiating with Washington, aiming to reduce the earlier-announced 24% tariff rate. The latest round of talks was held on June 18 this year. Ringgit opens firmer on renewed US rate cut hopes

KUALA LUMPUR : The ringgit opened stronger against the US dollar on Monday as hopes for an upcoming US rate cut increased following the latest data that showed a weaker US labour market, an economist said. At 8am, the local note climbed to 4.2350/4.2550 against the greenback from Friday's close of 4.2750/4.2815. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Afzanizam Rashid told Bernama that the US Non-farm Payroll (NFP) data came in lower than expected and surprised the market. The US Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS) reported on Friday that NFP stood at 73,000 for July, coming in much lower than the market consensus of 110,000. Afzanizam believed that the US labour market has weakened, which would bolster the case for an interest cut in the upcoming Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting in September. 'Already, the US Dollar Index (DXY) has declined to 98.708 points while the 2-year US Treasury yield saw a steep drop by 25 basis points to close at 3.69% last Friday. 'On that note, the ringgit may gain some strength today, having depreciated by 0.22% on Friday to 4.2782,' he said, adding that the ringgit is likely to trade within a range of 4.26 to 4.27 today. Nevertheless, the ringgit was lower against other major currencies in early trade. It weakened against the Japanese yen to 2.8749/2.8887 from 2.8407/2.8452 on Friday, fell slightly against the British pound to 5.6296/5.6562 from 5.6208/5.6293, and was lower against the euro at 4.9075/4.9307 from 4.8752/4.8826. Conversely, the local unit was mostly higher versus regional currencies. The ringgit rose against the Singapore dollar to 3.2873/3.3031 from Friday's close of 3.2907/3.2960, but slipped versus the Thai baht to 13.0388/13.1084 from 13.0058/13.0319. It went up against the Philippine peso at 7.28/7.32 from 7.35/7.36 last week and gained against the Indonesian rupiah to 256.4/257.8 from 258.8/259.4.

Ringgit extends gains vs dollar amid US rate cut talks

KUALA LUMPUR : The ringgit extended its gains to open higher against the US dollar today, as investor sentiment on risk assets rebounded amid talk of a possible US interest rate cut, an economist said. At 8am, the local note climbed to 4.2260/4.2395 against the greenback from yesterday's close of 4.2350/4.2385. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Afzanizam Rashid told Bernama that the US dollar slipped further as market participants continued to digest last Friday's weak labour market data, which bolstered the odds of a rate cut. 'It appears that emerging market currencies against the US dollar are in a sweet spot, as the Federal Reserve seems poised to cut its policy rate, perhaps at an accelerated pace, to demonstrate to markets that it is on top of the situation. 'The September Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting is likely to see a 25-basis-point rate cut,' he said. Afzanizam said the ringgit is expected to linger within a range of RM4.22 to RM4.23 against the US dollar, supported by the prevailing positive sentiment. Meanwhile, the ringgit was mostly higher against other major currencies in early trade. It weakened against the Japanese yen to 2.8795/2.8889 from 2.8652/2.8677 on Monday, but strengthened against the British pound to 5.6197/5.6377 from 5.6296/5.6342, and edged higher against the euro at 4.8954/4.9110 from 4.8978/4.9018. The local unit was also mostly higher versus regional currencies. The ringgit rose against the Singapore dollar to 3.2841/3.2949 from Monday's close of 3.2878/3.2908, but slipped against the Thai baht to 13.0747/13.1229 from 13.0452/13.0616. It appreciated against the Philippine peso at 7.36/7.39 from 7.38/7.39 yesterday, and firmed against the Indonesian rupiah to 257.6/258.5 from 258.2/258.5.
