Irvine is one of the most respected presenters in the business
The 2025 World Snooker Championship is nearing its conclusion, with Mark Williams and Zhao Xintong battling it out in the final at the Crucible Theatre.
Sunday's opening session saw Zhao race into a commanding lead, blowing three-time world champion Williams away and ending the session 7-1 up. The 28-year-old is playing as an amateur after being banned from snooker for 20 months following a match-fixing scandal, but could now become the first ever Chinese world champion if he can continue his fine form at the table.

The final, which will conclude on Monday, is being shown live on the BBC - with presenter Hazel Irvine fronting the coverage as she has done right throughout the tournament.

The 59-year-old is one of the most recognisable and respected sports presenters in the business, with her broadcasting career stretching back nearly 40 years.
Having excelled at sport - namely golf, netball and athletics - at university, Irvine began her career on the radio, before moving to Scottish Television and later becoming a sports reporter for the network.
She went on to co-host ITV's coverage of the 1988 Olympics and reported from the Scotland football team's training camp during the 1990 World Cup in Italy, before moving to the BBC in the same year and taking up the role of presenter for BBC Scotland's Sportscene programme.

Since the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, she has been a constant fixture for the broadcaster, covering nine Summer Games, five Winter Olympics, six Commonwealth Games and four FIFA World Cups.
She has led the BBC's coverage of the Triple Crown snooker tournaments - the World Championship, the Masters and the UK Championship - since 2002 and also covered golf for the broadcaster for 25 years, as well as some non-sporting presenting roles.
However, despite her remarkable and well-documented career, little is known about Irvine's personal life, with the St Andrews-born presenter managing to keep it out of the spotlight.

In fact, when she got married in 2008, it came as a complete shock to fans - with the identity of her husband still unknown.
It was first reported months after the event that Irvine had tied the knot with her mystery partner in a private ceremony in Scotland , with only close family and friends in attednance.
The presenter had sparked marriage rumours when she presented coverage of The Open at Loch Lomond wearing a ring, with her agent later releasing a statement confirming the news.

"I can confirm that she married her long-term partner a few months ago," the statement read. "It was a small and very private affair, and she and her husband are very happy. She wants to keep all the details private."
The following year, the couple welcomed a daughter together but, again, her name has never been disclosed publicly.
Irvine - who was 43 when she gave birth - had announced the news while at a charity sports quiz in London, telling the audience she had her "own credit crunch looming".

She added: "My clothes are already feeling the squeeze. My husband and I have a new arrival coming in the spring - which is going to be a drain on my own profits."
In an interview with MailOnline five years later, she said the birth of her daughter was the thing that "altered the course of her life and character", as she explained: "I'm 48 now so having her quite late was truly fantastic. The greatest gift has been rediscovering the world through her eyes."

BBC MasterChef fans spot huge editing blunder as contestant nods to empty space

BBC MasterChef fans spot huge editing blunder as contestant nods to empty space BBC MasterChef viewers were left more than a little distracted during Wednesday's episode, as they spotted an editing error MasterChef featured a lot more closeup shots than usual (Image: BBC) MasterChef viewers have commended BBC executives after noticing the awkward moment when a contestant was edited out of the cooking programme. ‌ The latest series of MasterChef has been embroiled in controversy in the weeks leading up to its launch, following the dismissal of hosts Gregg Wallace and John Torode. ‌ A report revealed that over 40 historical complaints against Wallace had been upheld, along with an allegation that Torode once used a racist term, which he strongly denies. ‌ Despite fan backlash calling for the series to be cancelled, producers chose to broadcast series 21, which had already been recorded. Wednesday (13 August) night's episode - the fourth in the series - saw five amateur chefs enter the BBC kitchen instead of the usual six. However, the wide shot of the group entering the studio raised some eyebrows as the show deviated from its typical format, opting instead for close-ups of their faces or pairs. Once inside, John and Gregg explained that two chefs would automatically progress to the next round after preparing their initial dish. The two men in the competition - Sam and Trevor - advanced to the next round, leaving the three women - Hazel, Aileeen, and Marcella - to compete again, reports the Express. Article continues below MasterChef is back with a new series (Image: BBC) Following the preparation of a second course, the women made their way back into the room, though the broadcast suddenly jumped after Hazel entered behind Marcella and Aileen. When John revealed which two chefs would progress to the final stage, the camera angles stayed tightly focused on each of the three contestants, departing from the programme's usual wider establishing shots. ‌ Marcella received her place first, with John then calling out Hazel's name. However, in a peculiar moment, Hazel - positioned at the end of the line - glanced to her left and offered a grateful nod before turning right to acknowledge Aileen, who stood in the centre of the group. Yet from what audiences could observe, nobody appeared to be standing to Hazel's left who would warrant such recognition. ‌ When Aileen departed the room, Hazel seemed to motion with her arm towards the left, before a conspicuous vacant space beside Hazel appeared on screen, rendering the exchange even more puzzling. This strange episode follows revelations that one participant had requested to be edited from the series. Social media users quickly took to X - previously Twitter - to commend the editors for their skilful work in seamlessly erasing one competitor from the programme. ‌ Eagle-eyed viewers spotted an editing blunder on the show (Image: BBC) One viewer praised: "Kudos to the editors of this episode. You would hardly have known that one contestant had been edited out." Another viewer concurred: "I've just witnessed a masterpiece of editing" whilst a third remarked: "They managed to completely edit out Sarah Shafi! How was it possible?". ‌ Sarah Shafi, from Leeds, maintained that broadcasting the series delivered the wrong message following the BBC's dismissal of presenters who subsequently returned to television. The 57-year-old participant revealed that producer Banijay had proposed editing her appearance from the episode in which she appeared. However, the contestant rejected this suggestion and demanded the entire series be cancelled. After the broadcaster confirmed the programme would proceed, Ms Shafi consented to being removed from the footage. Article continues below A Banijay spokesperson had previously stated: "As we said when we announced the show would be aired, this was not an easy decision in the circumstances and we appreciate not everyone would agree with it. "Banijay consulted with all the contestants before that decision was made and there was widespread support for it going ahead. The focus of the series is the contestants, as it always is. The edit has been looked at in light of the upheld findings." MasterChef is available to watch on BBC iPlayer

Police close investigation into death of Gogglebox star who fell 80ft at work

The investigation into the death of Gogglebox star George Gibley has been closed by police over a year after he fell 80ft while working as an electrician. On March 27, 2024, Gibley fell through a skylight while working on a roof at EGL Homecare in Shoeburyness, Southend-on-Sea and was pronounced dead at the scene aged 40. A short inquest hearing was told his cause of death was traumatic head and torso injuries 'consistent with a fall from a height'. Two men, now aged 37 and 49 and both from Witham, were arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter in connection with the death, but charges have now been dropped and the investigation closed. Essex Police confirmed to the BBC they had both been released without charge and would face no further action. However, a criminal investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) remains ongoing. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. 'The thoughts of everyone at Essex Police remain with George's family and friends,' a spokeswoman told the BBC. Gilbey appeared on the Channel 4 reality show between 2013 and 2018 with his mum Linda and stepdad Pete McGarry, who died aged 71 from bowel cancer four years ago. He also went on to appear in Celebrity Big Brother in 2014, finishing in fourth place. The family were popular on the show, with their down-to-earth personalities and funny quips. Linda paid tribute to her son weeks after his death, as she told Clacton Gazette he was 'generous, funny and kind'. She said: 'I'm devastated – he was like my best friend. He had the best heart in the world – he was generous, funny and kind, with bundles of charm and buckets of personality.' The star 'did more in his 40 years than people do in 90', she said. The grieving mother and widow also explained how when she was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease Gibley took it 'worse than her' as he was a 'mummy's boy'. 'George was a real contradiction – he was so funny and so intelligent. A lot of people don't know how intelligent George was,' she added. 'He was smart, which allowed him to be quick-witted, and he was loud and outgoing, but at the same time very sensitive. He helped others, but he struggled himself.' In a statement shared with Metro at the time of his death, a spokesperson for Gogglebox said: 'George was part of the Gogglebox family for eight series alongside his mum Linda and step-dad Pete. 'Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Linda, and George's family and friends at this very sad time. The family have asked for privacy.' Gibley's funeral took place on April 25 2024 at Weeley Crematorium after a friend of the family, Rob Barlow, asked for donations on behalf of Linda. On a GoFundMe page, they wrote: 'Anything you can donate would be a great help to the family so thank you in advance, all money will go to Linda to pay for his funeral costs and any funds that are left over after will be given to George's eight-year-old daughter Amelie.' The fundraiser set a £5,000 goal but reached over £6,000. Metro has contacted Essex Police for comment. Got a story? World's richest tennis player makes retirement admission as she speaks out on future

Jessica Pegula has announced that she will not follow the trend of elite tennis stars playing into their 40s, with Coco Gauff just about convincing her to carry on until the 2028 Olympics Billionaire tennis star Jessica Pegula has revealed she is looking to retire within the next 'two or three years'. Pegula, dubbed the world's richest tennis player, has won nine singles titles on the WTA Tour and is currently ranked No. 4 in the world. ‌ But despite being just 31 years old, the American insists she won't follow the Williams sisters' example by playing into her forties. The 2024 US Open finalist has set a deadline for her time on the court by stating she will not play professional tennis at the age of 35. ‌ Pegula has endured a tough and inconsistent season but has still won three titles, making her the oldest player currently inside the top 10. But she still has one specific tournament in mind – the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles – which she hopes could be her swan song. ‌ She recently told Caroline Garcia on the Tennis Insider Club: "I don't [have plans to follow the Williams sisters' example], I would definitely not be playing at 35, definitely not. "I think that's where I for sure have to stop. I think at 31? Yeah, I think it would be cool maybe like to try and make the Olympics, because it's in LA in a couple years. 'Three years, that's a long time, though. I'm counting technically like two years, because then you qualify, so I'll probably have an idea by then if I'm in or not. So we'll make it sound like two, it's three.' Given that she is the daughter of businessman Terry Pegula and stands to inherit some of his £5.6billion fortune, it is unlikely that she will continue playing out of any financial incentive. Terry, ranked as the 418th wealthiest person by Forbes, amassed his wealth through his ventures in the oil and gas industry. The billionaire also owns sporting giants Buffalo Bills (NFL) and Buffalo Sabres (NHL). Among the family's extravagant possessions are a £58million superyacht named Top Five II and a private jet, which Jessica also uses. Meanwhile, in terms of Pegula's own wealth she's earned on the tennis caught, she has amassed almost £14m from her playing career. ‌ Pegula's decision to play until the next Olympics was thanks to her former doubles partner and compatriot Coco Gauff. Having reached No. 1 in the doubles rankings together and represented America at last year's Paris Olympics, 21-year-old Gauff is insistent that the pair have to play together in LA. Pegula explained: 'I was talking to Coco, and she was like, 'You can play until LA.' She was mad at me because I was like, yeah, maybe a couple more years. ‌ 'She's like, 'If you're going to play two more years, you might as well just play another year for the LA Olympics.' And she's like, 'You can't retire before then.' This was the year before so it was four years. I was like, 'Coco, it's a long time, I'm going to be 34, what are you talking about?' 'She's like, 'You can just stay top 20. The way you hit the ball, you'll be fine.' She's like, 'I'm not letting you retire before the LA Olympics, especially if I qualify.' I was like, 'Okay. You're young, it's okay, you won't even be 25 yet, you still can't rent a car!'' Pegula went on to reveal that she will not return to professional tennis when she decides to have children. Since winning Bad Homburg, Pegula has gone only 2-4 in her last six matches. She was dumped out of the opening round at Wimbledon in July and suffered a disappointing defeat in the third round of the Cincinnati Open. But she'll be hoping to turn things around at her home Grand Slam tournament, the US Open, where she finished runner-up last year.
