KAWS will transform the New York Botanical Garden with colorful, graffiti-inspired artworks

Time Out16-07-2025
We're only halfway through 2025, but the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) is already looking ahead. Way ahead.
NYBG announced that it will bloom with a very special exhibition in 2027: a full, 250-acre takeover by Brooklyn-based artist KAWS, debuting May 22, 2027. Known for his pop culture-inspired sculptures, KAWS (aka Brian Donnelly) will present an outdoor installation of enormous proportions, turning the iconic Bronx gardens into a collision of nature and contemporary art.
KAWS' work seems especially suited for NYBG, with his sly, gigantic takes on figures like The Simpsons and Snoopy, plus his famous Companions series, inspired by Mickey Mouse (and a year spent as a Disney animator) and threaded throughout his career as both paintings and three-dimensional sculptures. The melancholy of the figures, with their gloved hands and X'd out eyes, will no doubt feel even more powerful against the idyllic natural backdrop.
NYBG has long held a reputation for creating opportunities for artists to engage in dialogue with its landscape, including landmark exhibitions by Yayoi Kusama and Ebony G. Patterson. Now KAWS will continue this tradition, inviting visitors to consider how human-made objects inhabit, disrupt, or enhance their environment.
The Garden also announced a 2026 exhibit, Flower Power, opening May 23, 2026, and channeling the '60s with a celebration of the flowers as symbols of peace and love. The gallery exhibit will include photography and art from the 1960s, as well as installations throughout the grounds. Other upcoming exhibits include the beloved annual tradition, Holiday Train Show (November 15, 2025–January 11, 2026), and The Orchid Show: Mr Flower Fantastic's Concrete Jungle (February 7–April 26, 2026).
Additionally, NYBG revealed that it will begin offering a new two-year membership option, which will include unlimited access and early entry to future exhibitions. No word yet on when tickets for the KAWS exhibit will go on sale, but NYBG members will receive priority access.
Currently, the NYBG hosts the exhibit Van Gogh's Flowers, pairing his paintings with contemporary interpretations and living installations, including a field of real and sculptural sunflowers from French artist Cyril Lancelin. That remains on view through October 26.

Disney and Universal dethroned as top theme parks by little-known rival

In a big win for a small-town Tennessee treasure, Dollywood has been crowned the best amusement park in the US for the second year in a row. TripAdvisor's annual list, based on thousands of traveler reviews, ranks Dollywood above giants like Disney's Magic Kingdom and Universal's Islands of Adventure. 'We don't provide the best guest experience in the country to try to win these awards. We do it because it is the right thing to do,' said Dollywood president Eugene Naughton. 'This award from TripAdvisor is humbling though, because it is derived from reviews left by our actual guests describing their time here at our parks and resorts.' Disney's Magic Kingdom came in second once again, with Hollywood Studios landing in fourth. But despite Disney's enormous crowds — the Orlando parks draw up to 58 million guests a year, compared to Dollywood's 3 million — it was the Smoky Mountains park that won visitors' hearts. Knoebels Amusement Resort in Pennsylvania jumped from eighth to third place, followed by Universal's Islands of Adventure, Fun Spot America, and Silver Dollar City. Whale's Tale Waterpark in New Hampshire cracked the top 10, nudging out Busch Gardens. Dollywood defeated Disney and Universal theme parks for the second year in a row TripAdvisor reviewers praised Dollywood not only for its rides but for its warmth, affordability, and charm. One visitor described it as 'a place to celebrate Dolly Parton's life,' blending Southern hospitality with thrill rides and family fun. Tickets to Dollywood range from $92 to $132, with water park access available for an additional $10. Meanwhile, some Disney fans are pushing back against the rankings — and recent park changes. Gavin Doyle, founder of Disney news site called Disneyland 'the most charming and impressive theme park resort in the US,' and questioned why it didn't make the top list. 'Dollywood is a great small theme park... but Walt Disney World delivers a great vacation experience at impressive scale,' he told Daily Mail. Meanwhile, Forbes also named Dollywood the top US employer for women, based on surveys of more than 140,000 women across large companies. 'We are proud of the ways we've empowered women across our organization — from leadership development to flexible scheduling and mentorship programs,' said Dollywood vice president of human resources Susan Loveday. Disney World has faced backlash from fans who were furious over its price hikes and ride removals Disney has faced criticism for high prices and the axing of rides. One guest was furious after paying $1,394.91 for a 'bargain' day out at Disney with his family of four. Fans also criticised the park for its decision to replace Star Wars: Launch Bay with a new experience called The Magic of Disney Animation at Hollywood Studios. Fans have also been grieving the loss of the Muppet Vision 3D show and the removal of Tom Sawyer Island in Frontierland. It is to make room for a highly anticipated Cars land, but it has made guests believe Disney is 'tearing apart' Magic Kingdom.

Midsomer Murders fans told to binge 'absolutely brilliant' detective drama they've probably never heard of

The Brokenwood Mysteries follows a crime-solving duo in a small town, just like Midsomer Murders - and the detective series has been dubbed as "the New Zealand Midsomer Murders" ITV Midsomer Murders fans are being encouraged to discover another "absolutely brilliant" detective series featuring a crime-solving partnership they've likely never encountered - but will undoubtedly find themselves binge-watching. ‌ The New Zealand-based crime drama, The Brokenwood Mysteries, centres on Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Shepherd and rule-following Detective Kristin Sims as they probe offences in the tranquil, small-town environment of Brokenwood. ‌ Much like the popular ITV drama Midsomer Murders, which features Neil Dudgeon - who recently discussed the 'far-fetched' storylines - The Brokenwood Mysteries presents an experienced DI partnering with a younger detective as they handle peculiar cases in a compact and apparently perfect town. ‌ Branded as "the New Zealand Midsomer Murders" it chronicles DI Mike Shepherd and his colleague, DC Kristin Sims, as they address baffling cases in the quiet town of Brokenwood, reports Hello! The ensemble is headed by Neill Rea (Go Girls, Auckward Love), portraying Shepherd, and Fern Sutherland (The Almighty Johnsons) as Sims, reports the Manchester Evening News. ‌ The programme's synopsis reveals that DI Mike Shepherd arrives in the ostensibly serene town of Brokenwood "with a classic car, a country music collection, and an indeterminate number of ex-wives". It adds: "His assistant, DC Kristin Sims, is a by-the-book investigator 15 years younger than her boss's car. Shepherd soon discovers that Brokenwood is full of secrets and suspicions." In the newest instalment, Shepherd and his colleagues find themselves entangled in a "web of deception, greed and dark secrets" whilst tackling their most baffling investigations in the picturesque village of Brokenwood, ranging from "mysterious murders" to "seemingly supernatural incidents". ‌ The programme, which proudly holds an 86 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, has earned acclaim from audiences who've branded it "excellent" and a "must-watch" across social media platforms. One viewer gushed: "The Brokenwood Mysteries. An absolutely BRILLIANT detective mystery from New Zealand. Quirky, well acted, great stories." Another fan characterised the programme as a "lighter New Zealand mystery series set in modern times in quirky small town.," praising its "plenty of humour among dark deeds, good writing, acting, and strange deaths." A third enthusiast urged fellow viewers to give it a go, declaring: "If you want a really excellent programme to watch, have a look at The Brokenwood Mysteries on Drama. The best thing I've watched in years." The Brokenwood Mysteries is available to binge-watch on the streaming service U. The 11th season arrives on U and U&Drama on Monday, August 18

National assignment on the radar for Vintage hero Zavateri

Following a successful debut at Salisbury in early June, the Without Parole colt sprang something of a surprise when landing Newmarket's July Stakes last month, but proved that victory was no fluke when bagging a second Group Two success in the Vintage Stakes on the Sussex Downs. Trainer Eve Johnson Houghton will now look to test her star juvenile at Group One level, potentially at the Curragh on September 14. 'He's come out of Goodwood great,' said the Blewbury-based trainer. 'He is unbelievable because he thought he'd won his race, he'd switched off and then good old Morris Dancer came for him and you could see him flick his ears, change his legs and almost say 'oh for goodness sake, come on then!'. 'We'll look at the Dewhurst but that's quite a long way off, he's in the National Stakes too so that would be quite a nice start for him with the timing – National and then Dewhurst. 'He's fantastic, I'm so proud of him. It's very, very exciting.'
