CNA21 hours ago
Former world number six Matteo Berrettini has withdrawn from the U.S. Open, tournament organisers said on Thursday.
The Italian, currently ranked 59th, has not competed since a first-round lost at Wimbledon in June after he had recovered from an abdominal injury.
Berretini skipped the Swiss Open in Gstaad, and the Masters 1000 events in Toronto and Cincinnati ahead of the Grand Slam at Flushing Meadows, where he reached the semi-finals in 2019.

US Olympic sprinter Fred Kerley provisionally suspended for missed drug tests

American Olympic sprinter Fred Kerley has been temporarily suspended for missing three drug tests outside of competition within a span of a year. The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) said that missing these tests is considered as 'whereabouts failures' and can result in a two-year suspension. Under the anti-doping rules, athletes are required to provide updated information about their whereabouts for testing, which includes a one-hour time slot each day. With this, three missed tests in a 12-month period are counted as an anti-doping violation. Kerley has made his name known by winning a silver medal in the 100-metre event at the Tokyo Olympics. He also won a bronze medal in the Paris Olympics last summer. More so, he became the 100-metre world champion back in 2022 and has won six medals overall at world championships. On social media, Kerley expressed his side of the story by stating, 'I stand on truth. Out of respect for the legal process, I won't go into further details at this time. But I can promise you this — I will be strong for my name, my career, and my legacy.' 'I've faced storms before. Every time, I've come out stronger. This will be no different,' he added. Furthermore, through attorney Howard Jacobs, it was stated that Kerley would challenge the charge, and stated that the athlete 'strongly believes that one or more of his alleged missed tests should be set aside either because he was not negligent or because the Doping Control Officer did not do what was reasonable under the circumstances to locate him at his designated location.' Netizens also expressed their opinions on the subject matter. One stated: 'Fred is done with track this season, but clearly track ain't done with Fred. Leave the guy be.' Another expressed that this is not the first time that this has happened. 'He's not the 1st. This occurred recently with another athlete, and it was overturned. Presumption without due process is often just gossip,' the netizen said. In another social media post, Kerley stated: 'You can try to break me in the storm, but all you're doing is giving me a better story at the finish line.' He was detained by law enforcement in Broward County, Florida, when official arrest records stated that the athlete was booked on a charge of 'touch or strike battery,' a wrongdoing under Florida law. 45-year-old Venus Williams given wildcard to play at the US Open, the oldest player so far in the tournament

Photo: Venus Williams will once again compete in a tennis Grand Slam at this year's US Open, following her two-year hiatus from the sport. The 45-year-old athlete recently received a wildcard into the tournament's women's singles event, and she will be the oldest athlete competing since 1981, following Renee Richards, who played at the age of 47 back then. Last season, Venus missed most of the events due to surgery to remove uterine fibroids. She recently had her comeback at the DC Open and had entered this year's Cincinnati Open via a wildcard as well. However, she was defeated during the first round of the singles tournament. In New York this year, she will play with Reilly Opelka in the mixed doubles event happening on August 19 and 20, and the singles event as well. In her tennis career, Venus has won seven major singles championships, which include the US Open 2000 and 2001. Furthermore, she won 14 titles in women's doubles with her younger sister, Serena Williams, and two more in mixed doubles. Williams declared at that time: 'This is very special for me to come back and play tennis… I think it's a surprise for the fans — and a surprise in general, as I hold my cards tight.' 'I definitely feel I'll play well. I'm still the same player. I'm a big hitter. I hit big. This is my brand,' she added. Furthermore, Venus also misses playing with her sister, Serena, on tour. The athlete also remarked that everything is a lot better if she were with her. She stated, 'I keep saying to my team: The only thing that would make this better is if she was here. Like, we always did everything together, so of course I miss her… But if she comes back, I'm sure she'll let y'all know.' Serena Williams has not played tennis since the 2022 US Open. During the peak of her career, the athlete won 23 major singles titles and 14 more in the doubles event with Venus. Read more about Venus Williams' 2025 tennis comeback here. Silva laments Fulham's 'passive' transfer activity as Premier League opener nears

Fulham manager Marco Silva has criticised the club's "passive" approach in the close-season transfer window, with only one signing secured ahead of their Premier League opener against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday. Fulham, who finished 11th last season after flirting with European qualification, have so far signed goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte from French side Montpellier on a free transfer. Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson, who spent last season on loan at Craven Cottage, has been linked with a move to Fulham, while the West London club's Brazilian forward Rodrigo Muniz has reportedly attracted interest from Italian side Atalanta. "It's not an ideal scenario. You used the word 'quiet' — I have to say we've been too passive. If you asked me if I expected it, I'd say of course not. But it is what it is, it's the market," Silva told reporters on Thursday. "It's important we didn't get injuries during pre-season because, in some positions, we are very short on numbers. We want to at least have a squad and players on the bench to play a Premier League game and meet the demands the league asks of you. "It's unexpected, even if it's normal for Fulham to sign players late. I don't go in that direction — I know what we want, and the plan was there." Muniz, who has scored 26 goals in 97 appearances for Fulham since joining in 2021, remains part of Silva's plans for the Brighton match despite speculation about his future. Top stories Swipe. With the transfer window set to close on September 1 for Premier League clubs, Silva is hopeful of bolstering his squad before the deadline day. "Let's hope we can do something before the end of the month, because right now it doesn't make sense for us to look toward the Brighton game or even the Man Utd game, as we've left it very late to reinforce the positions we need," Silva said.
