Previewing the 2025 season for Texas A&M DB Marcus Ratcliffe with his player profile
Marcus Ratcliffe was one of the key transfers who helped Coach Elko transition back into Aggieland. After starting 11 of 12 games as a true freshman and earning the team's Most Outstanding Defensive Freshman award, Ratcliffe made the jump to the SEC, where he played in all 13 games and started 12. He finished in the top 10 in the SEC with three interceptions and ranked third on the team with 48 tackles.
His impact was immediate, and with another year in the system, plus added speed on defense, his presence should pay dividends. Ratcliffe was recognized again at season's end when the first-year safety received the Defensive Newcomer of the Year award at the team's annual banquet.
Preseason Player Profile
Recruiting Rankings (Class of 2023)
The former three-star prospect was a standout defensive back, earning first-team all-league honors three times and helping lead his team to the 2021 state championship. He originally signed with San Diego State.
Depth Chart Outlook
The safety position is shaping up to be one of the more intriguing battles heading into 2025. Much will depend on the personnel the defensive staff chooses to roll with. Expect some combination of Dalton Brooks, Bryce Anderson, and Ratcliffe, though we shouldn't count out Myles Davis either. Given last season's inconsistency at the position, this decision will likely come down to who earns the most trust during game-week preparation.

LSU football legend Marcus Spears makes bolds statement about Brian Kelly's future
Expectations are high for LSU football in 2025. And with high expectations comes pressure. LSU head coach Brian Kelly is entering year four with the program. His tenure so far includes two 10-win seasons, but he's yet to lead LSU to a College Football Playoff. LSU signed the No. 1-ranked transfer class and retained quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. This is a talented roster and it was good enough to earn LSU a top-10 ranking in the initial coaches' poll. The hype train is rolling and former LSU football star Marcus Spears knows what that means for Kelly. "If you don't win big, if you're Brian Kelly, this fan base is done. And I'm just telling you, the wins and the success and all of the things, going to the SEC championship, your first year was great, but people still didn't feel like that was a big time accomplishment based on how it happened," Marcus Spears said. Spears referred to 2022, where LSU won the SEC West but was out of the playoff discussion thanks to a 9-3 regular season record. "This year, you see all of the transfers, you see the recruiting class, Garrett Nussmeier in the preseason Heisman conversation," Spears said, "All of those things in the past at LSU has aligned with them having big seasons." Spears said if LSU doesn't make the playoff, the fan base "is going to turn quickly on Brian Kelly." Spears' comments won't be news to Kelly. Every man who has held the head coaching position at LSU is familiar with the pressure. Ed Orgeron didn't shy away from talking about it during his tenure. Neither has Kelly. What are LSU football's odds of making the College Football Playoff? BetMGM odds as of Tuesday, August 5. LSU to make the College Football Playoff LSU football 2025 schedule

Florida's long snapper Rocco Underwood named to 2025 Patrick Mannelly Award watch list
The 2025 Patrick Mannelly Award watch list was recently released and included Florida football longsnapper Rocco Underwood, who earned the honor last season after a superb campaign. The rising redshirt senior originally from Lake Mary, Florida, will have the opportunity to repeat the honor in 2025 following an effort that also resulted in All-SEC recognition, as well as being named a Phil Steele First-Team All-American and AFCA Second-Team All-American. He has also made the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll thrice in his career, along with a SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll mention. Underwood has tallied a total of 314 special teams snaps over his four-season career in Gainesville, during which he made seven total tackles on special teams. Of those snaps, 103 of them came last fall when the special-teamer made significant improvements in his game across the board, amassing 56 successful punt coverages as well as 57 successful field goal and extra point attempts during that campaign. He notched his single-season career-high of three tackles in 2024, also notching his lone credited fumble recovery against the Florida State Seminoles. About the Patrick Mannelly Award The Patrick Mannelly Award was first issued in 2019 and is given to the best long snapper in college football. Named after Patrick Mannelly, who played as the long snapper for Duke University from 1993 to 1997 and was the long snapper for the Chicago Bears from 1998 to 2013. During his time in the NFL, Mannelly never recorded a bad snap and was credited with playing a pivotal role in the success of the kickers he played with. The award benefits Bernie's Book Bank, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding ways to help children develop their reading skills by providing free books to help build their home libraries in the local Lake Buff, Illinois, area. The 30-man watch list will be narrowed down to ten semifinalists on Nov. 17, with the three finalists being announced on Dec. 1 and the winner being selected on Dec. 13. Notre Dame has many stars named to ESPN's most important players in college football
With the college football season starting at the end of the month, ESPN took a look at the 40 most important players in the sport and named multiple Notre Dame stars to its list. Starting off with their No. 4 most important player in the new starting quarterbacks for likely contenders category was CJ Carr, as Bill Connelly wonders 'can he boost the Irish's upside enough to maybe actually win the national title game (while providing enough of a floor to get them back there)'? That a question that we'd all like answered, but it won't happen right way. He obviously believes that Carr will win the job over Kenny Minchey, which seems like the sentiment nationally. Both of the Irish's wide receiver transfers in Malachi Fields and Will Pauling were named in the category as most important (non-QB) transfers, although neither of them technically made list. However, cornerbacks Leonard Moore and Christian Gray did in the pure transcendence potential. Connelly was astounded by the depth that Notre Dame has at the position, noting that it 'lost all-world cornerback Benjamin Morrison to a injury six games into 2024 and didn't miss a single beat because Gray and Moore — then just a sophomore and freshman, respectively — were so damn good.' Star running back Jeremiyah Love (who spoke with us about his NIL deal with New Balance) made this category as well, but not named as one of the main players as was the case with the wide receivers. It's pretty clear that Notre Dame has plenty of star power entering 2024, as many of its young players emerged last fall and are known commodities. It should be another very successful season in South Bend starting just a few weeks from now.
