Stricter visa rules in US, UK and Canada to boost Indian higher institutions: ICRA

India Gazette9 hours ago

New Delhi [India], June 24 (ANI): Tightening student visa norms in the USA, the UK and Canada is likely to aid Indian higher education institutions in the near to medium term, according to rating agency ICRA.
ICRA's analysis suggests that the credit profiles of these institutes, especially those catering to the medical stream, have witnessed steady improvement in recent years.
ICRA projects the revenue of higher education institutions to expand by 9-11 per cent in FY2026, similar to the growth estimated for FY2025, on the back of expanding seat capacities, improving enrolments and addition of courses.
With nearly 15-20 per cent of India's population estimated to be in the 15-24 age bracket, and with improving literacy rates, the demand for higher education in the country is projected to increase over the next decade.
While increasing cost of higher education has remained a deterrent, improved access to credit (education loan) for students vying for higher education from various financial institutions has been providing support.
Additionally, the Government of India's (GoI's) expenditure on higher education has doubled in the last 10 years, which, coupled with the rise in the number of universities from 642 in AY2011 to ~1,189 as of AY2025, has translated into a handsome revenue growth for major universities.
Healthy admissions, along with annual fee hike of ~6-8 per cent has translated into a strong compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15 per cent in revenue growth for these colleges during FY2020-FY2024.
Suprio Banerjee, Vice president & Co-Group Head, Corporate Ratings, ICRA, said, 'Other than the GoI's impetus on higher education, the recent tightening of student VISA norms in the US, the UK and Canada will also propel some of the Indian students targeting enrolment in international universities to explore options at home. The higher education sector in India is poised for growth owing to continued strong demand, increasing disposable family income, easy access to credit, and enhanced Government focus, through initiatives like the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and private sector participation.'
Banerjee added, 'The operating surplus for the entities under study remained healthy at ~30-35 per cent during FY2020-2024 and is expected to remain strong at upwards of 30 per cent in FY2025 and FY2026. Despite intermittent sizeable capex requirements for capacity expansion, the debt coverage metrics are expected to remain healthy, driven by on-book liquidity to fund the capex as well as healthy surplus generation limiting the borrowing levels'.
The gross enrolment ratio (GER) for higher education has risen over the years to ~28 per cent in AY2022 from 21 per cent in AY2012.
The NEP 2020's target has been to boost the GER in higher education to 50 per cent by 2035, which though ambitious, also reflects the large untapped growth potential for the sector. (ANI)

Interest rate cuts boost House purchase affordability of homebuyers in H1 2025: Knight Frank India

Hyderabad, June 24 (UNI) House purchase affordability of homebuyers has improved in H1 2025 as the RBI slashed the repo rate by 100 bps during the period, according to Knight Frank India, in its proprietary report, Affordability Index. According to the Affordability Index, Ahmedabad is the most affordable housing market among the top eight cities, with a ratio of 18 percent, followed by Pune at 22 percent and Kolkata at 23 percent while Mumbai was the least affordable city with an affordability level of 48 percent. However, it is noteworthy that the market has breached the 50 percent mark for the first time in the history of the index. Knight Frank India's Affordability Index, which tracks the EMI (Equated Monthly Instalment) to income ratio for an average household, witnessed steady improvement from 2010 to 2021 across the eight leading cities of India especially during the pandemic when the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cut policy repo rate (REPO) to decadal lows. The central bank subsequently raised the REPO rate by 250 bps in a space of nine months starting May 2022 to address high inflation which caused stress on affordability levels. However, with inflation worries subsiding and economic growth regaining focus, the RBI slashed the REPO rate by 100 bps since February 2025. Shishir Baijal, Chairman and Managing Director, Knight Frank India said: "Affordability plays a critical role in maintaining homebuyer demand and sustaining sales momentum, both of which are vital contributors to the broader economy. As incomes grow and the economy gains strength, financial confidence among end-users improves, motivating them to commit to long-term investments such as home ownership. Given the RBI's healthy 6.5 percent GDP growth estimate for FY 2026 and a favourable interest rate scenario, affordability levels are expected to be supportive of homebuyer demand in 2025.' While the Indian economy is not insulated from the volatile geopolitical and economic environment, it continues to enjoy a relatively favourable economic growth and inflation environment. This has supported income growth and enabled lower interest rates which have in turn helped improve affordability despite the increase in residential prices. Incidentally, affordability levels are now at their best since the pandemic and are significantly better than the levels seen at the end of 2024, just before the first rate cut announced in February 2025. In Mumbai, the affordability index level improved by over 2 percentage points, moving from 50 percent in 2024 to 48 percent in H1 2025. This is the first time in the history of the index that Mumbai has come below the threshold of 50 percent mark which is considered the outer point of affordability. Mumbai's market which has always been above the threshold has now become more affordable due to the reduced home loan rates. Affordability levels have marginally worsened in NCR during the same period with households now needing to pay 28 per cent of their income for acquiring an average property in the city instead of 27 per cent in 2023. This can be attributed to the steep increase in residential prices which have eclipsed the impact of the interest rate cuts in the NCR. The RBIs neutral stance and intent to keep interest rates stable is expected to sustain affordability levels in the near term. The interest rate cut and CRR reduction in H1 2025 have significantly enhanced liquidity in India's financial system by unlocking substantial funds for lending and reducing the cost of borrowing. This infusion of liquidity should spur credit expansion and benefit both developers and urban homebuyers, thereby providing a boost to the broader real estate market. UNI KNR RN

Andrew Cuomo concedes New York City Democratic mayoral primary to Zohran Mamdani

Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo conceded New York City's Democratic Mayoral Primary to Zohran Mamdani as the 33-year old Indian-American member of the State Assembly had a significant lead in the race Tuesday (June 24, 2025) night. Mr. Cuomo's concession came as the race's outcome will be decided by a ranked choice count after neither Democrat got a clear majority in the vote. Mr. Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist member of the State Assembly, started to pull ahead with more than an estimated 80% of ballots counted. Mr. Cuomo, in a speech to supporters, said Mr. Mamdani 'won' and that 'we are going to take a look and make some decisions'. 'Tonight is his night,' Mr. Cuomo said. Mr. Mamdani would be the city's first Muslim and Indian-American Mayor if elected. Mr. Cuomo is trying to make a comeback from a sexual harassment scandal. Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams skipped the primary. He's running as an independent. The race's ultimate outcome could say something about what kind of leader Democrats are looking for during President Donald Trump's second term. The vote takes place about four years after Mr. Cuomo, 67, resigned as governor following a sexual harassment scandal. Yet he has been the favourite throughout the race, with his deep experience, name recognition, strong political connections and juggernaut fundraising apparatus. The party's progressive wing, meanwhile, had coalesced behind Mr. Mamdani. A relatively unknown State Legislator when the contest began, Mr. Mamdani gained momentum by running a sharp campaign laser-focused on the city's high cost of living and secured endorsements from two of the country's foremost progressives, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders. The primary winner will go on to face incumbent Mr. Adams, a Democrat who decided to run as an independent amid a public uproar over his indictment on corruption charges and the subsequent abandonment of the case by Mr. Trump's Justice Department. Republican Curtis Sliwa, the founder of the Guardian Angels, will be on the ballot in the fall's general election. There is also a possibility that Mr. Cuomo runs on the November ballot as an independent candidate if he loses the primary. The mayoral primary's two leading candidates — one a fresh-faced progressive and the other an older moderate — could be stand-ins for the larger Democratic Party's ideological divide, though Mr. Cuomo's scandal-scarred past adds a unique tinge to the narrative. The rest of the pack has struggled to gain recognition in a race where nearly every candidate has cast themselves as the person best positioned to challenge Mr. Trump's agenda. Comptroller Brad Lander, a liberal city government stalwart, made a splash last week when he was arrested after linking arms with a man federal agents were trying to detain at an immigration court in Manhattan. It was unclear if that episode was enough to jump-start a campaign that had been failing to pick up speed behind Lander. Among the other candidates are City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, State Sen. Zellnor Myrie, hedge fund executive Whitney Tilson and former city Comptroller Scott Stringer. Mr. Mamdani's energetic run has been hard not to notice. His army of young canvassers relentlessly knocked on doors throughout the city seeking support. Posters of his grinning mug were up on shop windows. You couldn't get on social media without seeing one of his well-produced videos pitching his vision — free buses, free child care, new apartments, a higher minimum wage and more, paid for by new taxes on rich people. That youthful energy was apparent Tuesday evening, as both cautiously optimistic canvassers and ecstatic supporters lined the streets of Central Brooklyn, creating a party-like atmosphere that spread from poll sites into the surrounding neighbourhoods. Outside his family's Caribbean apothecary, Amani Kojo, a 23-year-old first-time voter, passed out iced tea to Mr. Mamdani canvassers, encouraging them to stay hydrated. 'It's 100 degrees outside and it's a vibe. New York City feels alive again,' Mr. Kojo said, raising a pile of Mr. Mamdani pamphlets. 'It feels very electric seeing all the people around, the flyers, all the posts on my Instagram all day.' Mr. Cuomo and some other Democrats have cast Mamdani as unqualified. They say he doesn't have the management chops to wrangle the city's sprawling bureaucracy or handle crises. Critics have also taken aim at Mamdani's support for Palestinian human rights. In response, Mr. Mamdani has slammed Mr. Cuomo over his sexual harassment scandal and his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. In one heated debate exchange, Mr. Cuomo rattled off a long list of what he saw as Mamdani's managerial shortcomings, arguing that his opponent, who has been in theSstate Assembly since 2021, has never dealt with Congress or unions and never overseen an infrastructure project. He added that Mr. Mamdani couldn't be relied upon to go toe-to-toe with Mr. Trump. Mr. Mamdani had a counter ready. 'To Mr. Cuomo, I have never had to resign in disgrace,' he said. Mr. Cuomo resigned in 2021 after a report commissioned by the state attorney general concluded that he had sexually harassed at least 11 women. He has always maintained that he didn't intentionally harass the women, saying he had simply fallen behind what was considered appropriate workplace conduct. During the campaign, he has become more aggressive in defending himself, framing the situation as a political hit job orchestrated by his enemies. The fresh scandal at City Hall involving Mayor Eric Adams, though, gave Mr. Cuomo a path to end his exile.
