'Cricket, politics should never mix'

Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Multan Sultans' captain Mohammad Rizwan has said that cricket and politics should never mix.
Speaking to media in Lahore, he stated, "There should be no politics in cricket. I don't know what's happening between Pakistan and India — I don't use social media."
Reflecting on his interactions with international players, Rizwan emphasized the spirit of unity in the cricketing world.
"When we meet players like Virat Kohli and Joe Root, we interact like a cricketing family. We learn from them, and they learn from us too," he said.
Discussing Multan Sultans' exit from the tournament, Rizwan acknowledged his team's shortcomings.
"Team selection is based on conditions. All teams picked spinners, and we were rightfully eliminated because we made mistakes. We couldn't maintain momentum in the fielding department," he admitted.
On the pressure of leadership, Rizwan said, "If I say I don't feel pressure, that would be a lie. There is pressure as the captain of Pakistan, and also as Multan's captain. People are watching. We need to accept this pressure and work on our mistakes."
Addressing the evolving nature of T20 cricket, he pointed to the importance of adapting to local playing conditions.
"People say we need to play modern-day cricket, but what can we do about the conditions? Sometimes in T20s here, we have to play like it's Test cricket. Look at the T20 World Cupscoring even 120 was tough," he explained.
Rizwan urged players and fans to focus inward rather than comparing with others.
"We shouldn't focus on what others are doing. We must look at what the conditions demand," he said.
He also praised other PSL teams and their performances: "Lahore Qalandars have a different kind of passion. Quetta has momentum, and both Karachi and Islamabad have built very good squads."
In response to a question about Babar Azam's Peshawar Zalmi, Rizwan offered words of support: "Babar Azam's Peshawar Zalmi needs prayersI'll pray for them. If we had taken our catches, we wouldn't be in this situation today."
HBL PSL X to observe childhood cancer awareness day
The HBL Pakistan Super League, as part of its corporate social responsibility, is once again set to observe Childhood Cancer Awareness Day on 3 May and on this occasion teams, match officials and commentators will be involved in the support of the campaign.
HBL PSL Chief Executive Officer Salman Naseer:
"As part of HBL PSL's corporate social responsibility, we are observing Childhood Cancer Awareness on 3 May. This reflects our commitment to using the platform of cricket to help raise awareness around health challenges that affect many lives across the country.
"We are thankful to the teams, players, commentators, fans and media friends for their continued support in promoting these awareness efforts through HBL PSL."
The HBL PSL X will see the Childhood Cancer Awareness Day to be observed during Quetta Gladiators and Islamabad United fixture at the Gaddafi Stadium on Saturday. The match will begin at 8:00pm.
Match officials and match commentators at the venue will wear gold ribbons, synonymous with Childhood Cancer Awareness campaigns. Gladiators and United players will wear Golden caps as well as gold ribbons.
The stumps in use for the match will also be branded in gold, while three cancer patients will be invited at the ground where they will be presented signed shirts from both sides.
Additionally, Childhood cancer awareness messages would be displayed on the digital screens placed at the stadium to create awareness about the disease aimed at educating the spectators.

Tuchel unhappy with England attitude after Andorra toil
BARCELONA: England coach Thomas Tuchel criticised his team after they struggled to a 1-0 victory away to Andorra in a World Cup qualifier on Saturday. The German has won his first three matches in charge with no goals conceded but had it not been for Harry Kane's 50th-minute goal his team would have faced humiliation against a side ranked 173rd in the world. After collecting the three points that put England in command of Group K, Tuchel made no attempt to sugar coat a performance that was way below par. 'We lost all momentum after the first 25 minutes and lacked the quality and the energy. I was most worried in the last 20 minutes, I did not like the attitude that we ended the game with. England had 83% of the possession against a nation they had scored 25 goals against without reply in six previous meetings, but suffered from a chronic lack of imagination. Asked if his message before the game had not got through to his players, Tuchel added: 'The message got across because we had a good 25 minutes but then the energy and the determination weren't there anymore.' It was a refreshingly honest take from the former Paris St Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager whose contract with England only runs to the date of next year's World Cup final. He did have kind words, however, for Chelsea winger Noni Madueke whose display was about the only bright point for England. 'He was over the course of the match, the most dangerous. I could feel his hunger to do what was the plan throughout the whole of the match,' Tuchel said. Ballon d'Or 'should go to Champions League winner', says Ronaldo Captain Kane, whose goal was the 450th of his career for club and country, also praised Madueke. 'I think he was a constant threat today and got the assist for the goal, but we need more of that,' Kane said. 'We have amazing players and we need players who are not afraid to take players on and if they lose it, do it again.' England host Senegal in a friendly in Nottingham on Tuesday.

Brazil held in Ancelotti debut
Carlo Ancelotti's debut as coach of Brazil ended in a goalless draw in Ecuador in South American World Cup qualifying on Thursday. The 65-year-old Italian, who left Real Madrid at the end of the European season, has been charged with taking Brazil through the latter stages of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. The former AC Milan and Chelsea manager replaced Dorival Junior, who was sacked at the end of March after the 4-1 thrashing at the hands of reigning champions and bitter rivals Argentina. Thursday's result leaves the Selecao in fourth place in the qualifying table on 22 points while Ecuador, the surprise package in the campaign, remain in second place on 24 points. Argentina, who face Chile later on Thursday, lead the standings on 32 points and are the only team to have officially secured their place in the tournament which will be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico. Chances were limited in a contest where neither side was able to get control of midfield. The pattern continued after the break with Ecuador, missing their injured striker and talisman Enner Valencia, struggling to pose a threat. Real Madrid star Vinicius was quiet for much of the game and with Rodrygo absent, Brazil also lacked potency in attack. The best opening came in the 75th minute when Vinicius broke down the left and cut back to Casemiro.

South Africa name squad for Zimbabwe Test
South Africa have unveiled their squad for the upcoming two-Test series against Zimbabwe, set to begin later this month in Bulawayo. The squad features five uncapped players, with 19-year-old batting sensation Lhuan-dre Pretorius headlining the selection following his breakout performances in domestic cricket. Joining Pretorius in line for a potential Test debut are Dewald Brevis, Lesego Senokwane, Codi Yusuf, and Prenelan Subrayen. The series does not fall under the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27, as Zimbabwe are not part of the current cycle. It will instead serve as a developmental opportunity for head coach Shukri Conrad to test new talent and build squad depth ahead of the 20252027 WTC cycle. We'll reintroduce him gradually, starting with the shortest format, before "Nandre has been given the all-clear by the medical team to play T20s.
