Your Genes, Your Health: Why Genetic Testing Is the Smartest Wellness Move You Can Make

Genetic testing is transforming preventive healthcare by revealing hidden disease risks and empowering individuals—especially women—to make informed choices
By now, we're used to thinking of our genes as the blueprint of who we are. But what if they could also serve as a map—guiding us through critical decisions about our health, long before any symptoms show up? With the rise of affordable, accessible genetic testing, that future is already here.
Take the chilling cases of sudden cardiac deaths among elite athletes or seemingly healthy young adults diagnosed with advanced cancers—often without warning or obvious risk factors. According to Dr. Ashok Gopinath, Head – Partner Development, Strand Life Sciences, such scenarios, though rare, highlight a crucial truth: 'It is quite well established that beyond advanced age and lifestyle, genes play a significant role in the onset of diseases like cancer and cardiovascular conditions."
In fact, about 10% of all cancers have a hereditary basis. 'Inherited BRCA mutations, for instance, confer a 69–72% lifetime risk for breast cancer and a 17–44% risk for ovarian cancer," adds Dr. Gopinath. That's compared to baseline population risks of just 5–12% and less than 1%, respectively. Despite this, genetic testing has traditionally been recommended reactively—after symptoms, or a strong family history, surface.
But times are changing. Thanks to newer, non-invasive screening tools and plummeting costs, genetic testing is no longer a diagnostic tool of last resort—it's emerging as a proactive strategy. Tests like Genomic Health Insights (GHI) by Strand Life Sciences now allow individuals to screen for over 280 adult-onset genetic disorders, including various cancers and heart diseases, even in the absence of symptoms. 'We truly are fortunate to live in a time where every individual is empowered to take predictive tests and proactively understand their risk," says Dr. Gopinath.
As someone who treats hundreds of women facing fertility struggles, Dr. Lekhi sees genetic testing as a revolution. 'From uncovering hidden causes of infertility and miscarriage to detecting risks for PCOS, endometriosis, or premature ovarian failure, your DNA contains vital clues," she explains. And it doesn't stop there. For patients undergoing IVF, preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) helps select the healthiest embryos, thereby increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy. Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), on the other hand, offers peace of mind by detecting chromosomal abnormalities early in pregnancy.
Most importantly, genetic insights can help women take control of their reproductive futures. 'Whether it's freezing eggs at 20 or addressing inherited conditions before they compromise fertility, the possibilities are staggering," says Dr. Lekhi. 'Your genes aren't your fate—they're your map. And genetic screening? That's the compass guiding you intelligently."
As science gives us more tools to understand our biology, the message is clear: we no longer have to wait for a diagnosis to act. In the evolving landscape of personalised healthcare, knowing your genetic risk may be the most empowering move you can make—for today and for the years to come.

Why Early Fertility Screening Matters for Young Adults

Bengaluru: In India, fertility is still a subject discussed mostly after marriage. But is that the right approach? Unfortunately, couples who struggle to conceive often face blame, delays in diagnosis, and emotional distress. The truth is that fertility isn't just about age or timing—it's influenced by several factors in both men and women. That's why early fertility screening should be seen not as a reaction to a problem, but as an essential part of proactive health planning. This article highlights the growing importance of fertility testing for young adults and how it can pave the way for healthy, informed parenthood. What is fertility testing? For women, fertility screening consists of a basic blood test and ultrasound; for men, it consists of a semen analysis that can provide important information about your reproductive health. In addition to checking sperm motility and count, these tests can assist women evaluate their ovarian reserve (egg count), hormone levels, and uterine health. The report's findings will assist people in considering their options, including trying to conceive sooner, using ARTs or reproductive preservation techniques like preserving eggs or sperm, or treating underlying disorders like varicocele, PCOS, or endometriosis. Elaborating on how fertility screening can help Hormonal Imbalances: abnormalities in key hormones such as progesterone, oestrogen, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteal phase can indicate underlying conditions such as early ovarian insufficiency, PCOS, or luteal phase defects. Low progesterone levels, for example, may be a sign of luteal phase problems, which may result in early pregnancy loss or difficulty implantation. Ovulation Irregularities: An irregular ovulation cycle or anovulation (absence of ovulation) can be detected by monitoring ovulation using tests that assess the LH surge or basal body temperature. Early detection of ovulation issues, help couples to better schedule periods or intrauterine insemination (IUI). And, early treatment guarantees that ovulatory abnormalities won't become a persistent barrier to getting pregnant. Ovarian Reserve: A woman's ovarian reserve is the quantity and quality of eggs she still has in her ovaries. Tests such as ultrasound-based Antral Follicle Count (AFC) and Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) levels can evaluate ovarian reserve and give a comprehensive picture of reproductive potential. Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART): Important information from early diagnostic testing, such as sperm quality, uterine anomalies, or endometriosis, might assist you in determining which ART is best for you. Fertility evaluations often uncover broader health concerns, such as thyroid disorders or diabetes, which can impact conception and pregnancy. Can fertility screening help to cope with mental and financial stress? Yes! When screening is done at the appropriate moment, people or couples always have the opportunity to mentally prepare themselves, learn what their bodies truly need, and gain options. Instead than rushing into treatments or feeling pushed later, seek prompt intervention. Also, prevent a woman from having recurrent miscarriages. And, will lessen the psychological toll that infertility takes, which is sometimes made worse by time constraints and cultural expectations. Early diagnosis is the cornerstone of fertility success. By identifying potential issues early, individuals and couples can access targeted treatment. Therefore, one should undergo fertility screening in their 20s or early 30s. It is not about rushing into parenthood, it's about keeping your options open and staying in control of your health. What to eat for better fertility outcomes: Doctor shares top nutrients that help improve egg health and sperm quality

Nutrition is the bedrock of the body's fundamental functions, whether it's keeping your energy up for daily activities or supporting fertility. For couples undergoing IVF, a balanced diet can significantly improve the chances of success. Fertility chances can be improved with better nutrition.(Shutterstock) ALSO READ: Doctor shares diet tips for women with PCOS to better manage symptoms and fertility issues Dr Nishi Singh, Head of Fertility at Prime IVF, told HT Lifestyle that nutrition plays a crucial role in improving IVF outcomes. Explaining more about the influence of diet, she said, "Nutrition can regulate hormones, oxidative stress, blood sugar, and inflammation. Adequate, balanced nutrition supplies these processes with the fuel they need to operate and has a direct impact on reproductive health. IVF is dependent on the health of the sperm and egg to yield healthy embryos. Diet can be an extremely deciding factor that may go together with clinical treatment and increase its success rate.' What to eat for better egg quality in women? Flaxseeds contain omega-3 fatty acids.(Shutterstock) While egg health is often associated with age, what you eat also matters. Certain nutrients can help support better egg development. Dr Nishi Singh addressed this point and said, "In women, the quality of the eggs is determined by various dietary factors. Although the main criterion is age, diet plays a larger part in egg formation and its vulnerability to cellular stress.' Dr Singh listed out 5 nutrients and how they help with the egg's health in women: Folic acid: Folic acid is needed for DNA synthesis, which fixes and prevents abnormalities of chromosomes. Antioxidants: Antioxidants like vitamins C and E, selenium, and zinc shield the egg from oxidative stress that damages the structure as well as the function of the egg. fatty acids: Omega-3 fatty acids in flaxseeds, walnuts, and fatty fish provide hormonal equilibrium along with a reduction of inflammation, both of which are needed for ovulation and implantation. CoQ10, an antioxidant produced by the human body, has also found acceptance in the form of a fertility agent, especially in women over 35 years, as it enhances energy production, which is vital for the quality of the egg. Vitamin D and iron are also important. Vitamin D: Vitamin D regulates Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) levels, a marker of ovarian reserve. Iron: Iron maintains ovulatory function and general reproductive hormone secretion. What to eat for better sperm health in men? Oranges contain antioxidants.(Shutterstock) Fertility outcomes depend not just on egg health but also on sperm quality. When it comes to sperm, count and motility are essential in successful conception. This is where nutrition comes in to support sperm production and improve quality. Dr Singh added, 'Male contribution holds almost 40–50% of the causes of infertility, and therefore, diet cannot be overlooked here as well. High intake of trans fats, alcohol, and processed foods is correlated with poorer semen parameters.' Here are some of the nutrients that help men with sperm quality, as per Dr Nishi Singh: Zinc and selenium: Zinc and selenium are two minerals whose effects are quite important on testosterone secretion and sperm growth. The deficiency of these minerals goes hand in hand with diminished motility and abnormal morphology. Antioxidants: Antioxidants such as vitamins C and E guard sperm DNA against oxidative stress and improve the quality of sperm. Folate: Folate is a B vitamin which also plays a role in DNA synthesis and normal sperm development, since deficiency is observed with reduced sperm count and increased abnormalities.
