River Tyne: Fish counts on England's best salmon river drop

Estimates of salmon and trout populations found upstream on "England's best salmon river" have been below average this year, according to the Environment Agency (EA).It said the prolonged dry weather at the start of the year had not provided the conditions to encourage fish on the River Tyne to migrate upstream which is where they counters on the river have been partly broken since October 2024 and so the fish counts collected by the EA since then have only been estimates."We have confidence in our approach to estimate the number of fish using a combination of historic numbers, rod catch numbers, and fishing effort data," the EA said. Local fisherman Gerry Moore, who has fished on the Tyne for over 50 years, said he was not confident in the EA's estimates and that without a working counter it was difficult to tell how badly salmon numbers had actually dropped on the said both he and his fishing club had experienced smaller catches than they did in previous years."It's declined steadily over certainly the past seven or eight years," he said. 'Fixed by autumn' The Tyne's fish pass - at Riding Mill in Northumberland - has been fitted with a monitor to check the water body's salmon and sea trout populations since counters were broken between July 2023 to July 2024 and then again partly since October. The EA said it expected the river to have fully working counters by the autumn."We can only repair fish counters when it is safe and suitable to carry out in-river work," a spokesperson addition, the EA said it was still investigating its faulty fish counters on the River Wear which have not collected any data at all this said was working with external consultants and Durham County Council to fix the problem. The EA said the likelihood of its fish counters in the region breaking had increased in the last 10 years due to a rise in "very high flow events".Since 2020 the fish counters on the Tyne have not collected full fish counts for 32 months, according to latest EA between 1996 and 2019 there were just 11 months were full counts were not collected. The EA said it was reviewing the design of new protective covers for its counters so that they could better withstand strong river forces. Exact time Storm Floris will hit UK as ‘danger to life' warning issued

Several UK areas have been plunged under a yellow weather warning for wind as forecasters warn of major disruption due to the conditions. The strongest winds could travel up to 85mph Brits have been told to brace themselves for fierce winds as a storm is set to batter areas across the UK. ‌ Storm Floris is predicted to cause havoc across Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland, north Wales and the north of England. The worst conditions could bring winds of 85mph along with torrential rain, the Met Office warned. Northern parts of the country have been plunged under a yellow warning from 6am on Monday until 6am the following day. ‌ Coastal areas could also feel the wrath of the storm, with westerly gusts of 40-50mph expected to take its toll. Exposed coasts and high ground could see the speed soar to a staggering 70mph. Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill has stressed that the conditions could have a disastrous impact in some areas due to the time of year. It comes after an exciting heatwave forecast with maps revealing the exact date a 39C heat plume will scorch the UK. ‌ ‌ He said: 'It's not that often that we get storms during the summer months, but it's worth bearing in mind that at this time of year we could see some increased disruption because of the fact that the trees are full of leaf and there are lots of outdoor activities planned. You may be camping, you may be trying to head to a festival… as a result we could see some significant impacts because of not only the rain, but also the winds.' Flying debris may cause injuries and pose a danger to life in places inside the warning zone, the Met Office said. As could 'large waves and beach material being thrown on to sea fronts, coastal roads and properties', it added. It is possible tiles will be blown from roofs and there may be power cuts. ‌ The weather could also disrupt road, rail, air and ferry services, and close bridges. Storm Floris is the sixth named storm of the 2024-25 naming season, which runs from early September to late August, and January's Storm Eowyn was the most recent. Named storms are more frequent in late autumn and winter but are 'not uncommon' for summer, the Met Office said. The weekend will see a combination of sunshine and showers before Floris hits. The forecast rain will not counteract the impacts of the driest start of the year since 1976 but will provide some short-term relief, said Environment Agency (EA) national drought manager Stuart Sampson. The UK has experienced three heatwaves so far this summer, which left four regions of England in drought. River flows and reservoir levels continue to be a concern, Mr Sampson said, adding: 'Everyone can play their part by using a little less water to ease pressures on our water supply.' RAC breakdown service's Rod Dennis said: 'This unseasonable bout of stormy weather will mean drivers in the north and west of the UK need to take extra care at the start of next week. It's the height of the holiday season, so those towing trailers and caravans, as well as those with roof and tent boxes, must ensure their loads are properly secured.' He advised motorists to slow down in poor weather, leave later if the conditions are too bad, and avoid exposed highland and coastal routes.

Middlesbrough Hemlington Lake toxic algae warning

Visitors are being advised to avoid contact with the water in a lake after testing revealed it contains toxic blue-green bacteria, which can be harmful to humans, has been found to be above the warning level in Hemlington Lake on the outskirts of Middlesbrough, the local council Environment Agency (EA) has warned the algae can be fatal to animals if ingested and people are being urged not to allow their dogs to enter the to the EA, areas where there is a bloom will have water that appears less clear and may look green, blue-green or greenish-brown. A spokesperson for Middlesbrough Council said: "Tests carried out by the Environment Agency on the water at Hemlington Lake have shown that blue/green algae levels are above the warning threshold."The high levels make the water potentially toxic to humans and dogs, especially if it's ingested."The problem can occur during calm weather when several bloom forming species rise to the surface, creating an appearance like paint, mousse or small clumps.
