Ringgit slips at opening against greenback as US rate cut hopes fade
At 8 am, the ringgit dipped to 4.2480/2575 against the greenback, compared to Tuesday's close of 4.2395/2440.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the US June Consumer Price Index (CPI) report released on Tuesday suggests that the inflation rate there is climbing, dashing hopes for an interest rate cut at the upcoming US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting at the end of July.
'The US CPI came in at 2.7 per cent higher year-on-year in June from 2.4 per cent in the preceding month and similarly, the core CPI rose 2.9 per cent during June after sustaining 2.8 per cent increases for three consecutive months,' he told Bernama.
Mohd Afzanizam also noted that China's second quarter gross domestic product (GDP) moderated to 5.2 per cent from 5.4 per cent in the first quarter, resulting in the Chinese yuan weakening against the greenback by 0.15 per cent to 7.1825 yuan. 'In light of the latest US CPI and China's GDP, the ringgit could experience some knee jerk reaction with the US dollar-ringgit pair at around RM4.24-RM4.26 today,' he added.
At the open, the ringgit was traded higher against a basket of major currencies.
It improved against the Japanese yen to 2.8552/8618 from 2.8702/8734 yesterday, strengthened against the British pound to 5.6893/7021 from 5.7047/7107, and gained versus the euro to 4.9311/9421 from 4.9539/9591.
The local note trended mixed against ASEAN currencies.
The ringgit trended firmer vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar at 3.3066/3145 from 3.3095/3133, and edged up against the Thai baht to 13.0355/0783 from 13.0784/0988.
But it slipped against the Indonesian rupiah to 261.1/261.8 from 260.6/261.0 and dropped against the Philippine peso at 7.49/7.51 from 7.47/7.49 from Tuesday's close. - Bernama

Six Perak new villages receive RM185,000 for revitalisation projects
Perak government has allocated some RM185,000 to revitalise six Chinese new villages in the state. Perak domestic trade, cooperatives, consumer affairs and Chinese new village committee chairman Woo Kah Leong said the works would be implemented under the Chinese New Village Empowerment Programme 2025. 'We opened applications from April 14 to May 16 and received 20 proposals, from which six were selected,' he said in a press conference. 'These projects are aimed at protecting the heritage of the village, boosting the local economy, promoting community participation, enhancing tourism and preserving cultural diversity,' he added. The six projects are the revitalisation of the charcoal industry in Kuala Sepetang by Persatuan Rimba Kuala Sepetang with an allocation of RM30,000, as well as Pangkor Island Festival by Pertubuhan Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Timur with a RM50,000 grant. Other projects are the village mural initiative by Liman Kati new village development and security committee (JPKK) which received RM15,000, Old Street Revival Initiative by Matang JPKK which was allocated RM30,000, Bercham Run by Bercham JPKK which was given RM30,000 and a mid-autumn festival event by Menglembu JPKK which was awarded RM30,000. Woo said Chinese new villages in Perak faced challenges such as declining birth rates, ageing population and migration of residents to urban areas. 'These issues have disrupted the cultural, economic and social development of these villages. 'The empowerment programme was introduced to address these challenges and aims to shift policy implementation from a top-down to a bottom-up approach by encouraging active participation from village residents in local development,' he said. Woo said funding for the six projects came from his office and was aimed at livening up new villages while preserving its unique identity. He urged the younger generation to return and serve their communities through initiatives like these. 'This way, Chinese new villages can once again become vibrant centres of cultural, economic and social activity, while also attracting younger generations to contribute to village development rather than migrating to the cities,' he added.

China Eastern Airlines launches Shanghai-Copenhagen route
COPENHAGEN, July 17 (Xinhua) -- China Eastern Airlines on Thursday launched a new direct route between China's Shanghai and Denmark's Copenhagen, strengthening air connectivity between the two countries. An Airbus A330 aircraft landed at Copenhagen Airport at 7 p.m. local time, where it was greeted with a traditional water salute. After two hours, the return flight departed Copenhagen, carrying over 250 passengers back to Shanghai. A ceremony was held at Copenhagen Airport's terminal to celebrate the inaugural flight. China Eastern Airlines prepared special commemorative gifts for passengers on both the outbound and return journeys. Speaking at the ceremony, Chinese Ambassador to Denmark Wang Xuefeng said the new route creates another "air bridge" between China and Denmark, helping to deepen practical cooperation in various fields, enhance mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples, and promote business exchanges and collaboration. This year marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The new route will initially operate three flights per week on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Starting Sept. 24, the service will expand to four weekly flights, adding a flight on Wednesdays.
