Mauricio Pochettino breaks unwanted record as USA humbled by Switzerland just a year before World Cup begins

MAURICIO POCHETTINO's nightmare start as USMNT boss continued with a thumping loss against Switzerland.
The Stars and Stripes trailed 4-0 at HALF-TIME infront of an embarrassed Poch in Tennessee.

Pochettino 's side have now lost four matches on the bounce since March.
The 53-year-old had declared his team had hit "rock bottom" after defeat to Canada in March.
But two months on, the USMNT are enduring their worst run of form since 2007.
It comes just twelve months before the country hosts the World Cup.
Tuesday's humiliating defeat was also the first time since 1980 the US have shipped four goals in one half.
Dan Ndoye, Michel Aebischer, Breel Embolo and Johan Manzambi were all on target for the Swiss at a stunned Geodis Park.
All four goals arrived in a 23-minute flurry before the break.
Pochettino's men are preparing for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which kicks off on June 15.
And after making a host of changes, the Argentine admitted he might have tinkered too much.
The former Spurs boss said: "First of all, I think it, of course, is our responsibility and my responsibility, the decision of the choice of the starting eleven.
USA manager Mauricio Pochettino gives reaction to 2-1 loss to Canada
"I think we wanted to give the possibility to the whole roster to have minutes and play for different circumstances and I think that is the risk that we took.
"The combination of the starting eleven of the team, wasn't, I think, now after 90 minutes, the best.
"We need to say, blame ourselves. Criticise us. Because it was my decision, and that decision didn't work, and when that doesn't work, you need to be critical with yourself."
Former Chelsea star Christian Pulisic has made himself unavailable for the upcoming Gold Cup.

And the 26-year-old's decision has been slammed by former USA forward Langdon Donovan.
After watching Cristiano Ronaldo, 40, in tears after Portugal's Nations League triumph, Donovan said: "This is what it means to represent your country.
"And if you don't want to take this, as a professional soccer player and someone who gets the opportunity to wear that jersey and take it seriously and responsibly, then don't come in.
"This is what it means. He's [Ronaldo] 40 years old, he played a long-a** season, he's tired, he was out there grinding and hurt himself in the process.
"And I can't help but think about some of our [USMNT] guys on vacation right now, not wanting to play in the Gold Cup. It's p***ing me off.'

Gordon aiming to end career on high with Hearts and Scotland at World Cup

Craig Gordon is aiming to end his illustrious career on a high by having a good season with Hearts and helping Scotland to the World Cup. The veteran goalkeeper, who will turn 43 in December, has signed on for another year at Tynecastle in a bid to help his boyhood club improve on a disappointing campaign. He also has his sights set on a swansong in North America where the World Cup will be held next summer and believes the current squad have enough to reach the biggest stage of all. The national team haven't qualified for the tournament since 1998, and Gordon believes it would mark the perfect end to a storied career. Hearts will take on newly promoted English Premier League side Sunderland to mark his testimonial year on July 26. Speaking about his decision to keep playing for another year, he said: 'As last season wore on, towards the end, when things started to calm down a bit and we were down to one game a week, the workload was still manageable. 'For most of the first part of the season, I thought that would be my last season, but as the season progressed I still felt good and decided I still had another year left in me. 'So, it was a good decision, I think. I am excited again to get back to pre-season and ready to go again. 'It wasn't a great season for anybody at the club, so there was always that in the background, but personally for me I didn't think it was too bad, I had some good moments throughout the season and I think not having that good last moment, to be able to go out on a high, I am still really motivated to get out there and do as best as I can and be the best goalkeeper I can be. 'So there was that, and with Scotland as well the World Cup is going to be decided over the next six games within four or five months of the season starting, so it's not that far away. 'That was all the reasons I needed to keep going and keep giving it my very best.' Gordon first signed for the Jambos in 1999 and made his professional debut while out on loan at Cowdenbeath as a teenager in 2001. In a career that has spanned 24 years, he has also played for Sunderland and Celtic, winning three Scottish Cups, five Premiership titles and five League Cups while helping the Hoops to a historic quadruple treble between 2017 and 2020. He has also earned 81 Scotland caps and insists he is motivated as ever for further success domestically and at international level. He said: 'I am motivated on both fronts. There have been a lot of changes at Hearts, and there's a new management team coming in. Also, we have six games with Scotland, and I believe in that squad. 'I think we can beat anybody on any given day, so we have got great ability there and the chance to get ourselves to a World Cup. 'It will be difficult, there are other good teams in the group, but I still think we have that opportunity and it's an exciting time at Hearts with the new manager and a host of new players. 'So there is a lot to be positive about on both fronts.' "Steve is absolutely desperate to get us to a World Cup," he said. "We've got a squad that, when fully fit and firing, is very much capable of getting us to a World Cup. "It's the final piece in the jigsaw for Steve and the players." Clarke previously admitted that there is a '75 per cent' chance he won't renew his deal following the next World Cup. Maxwell was quizzed on whether the SFA will offer the boss an extension: "That's a conversation for the time," he answered. "We've been very clear throughout this that we'll have those discussions when the time is right. "There's always an element of that [planning ahead for a new head coach] if I'm doing my job properly. "There's always an eye on who's available because managers come and go for a variety of different reasons. "There's always an eye on who's available, but the focus at the moment is on Steve and the team and making sure they get to USA, Mexico and Canada next year." Thierry Henry's dream striker for Arsenal distances himself from transfer links

Julian Alvarez appears to have distanced himself from rumours he could be set quit Atletico Madrid this summer, labelling the club 'one of the best in the world'. The 25-year-old forward enjoyed an outstanding debut season in La Liga having joined Atleti from Manchester City, racking up 17 goals and four assists in the Spanish top flight. There had been some questions over the £80m fee that Atleti decided to part with to land Alvarez, but the Argentina international has more than lived up to expectations filling the void left by Alvaro Morata. However, speculation has been swirling that Alvarez could be on his way out of the Metropolitano Stadium after just 12 months, with Arsenal and Liverpool both credited with a strong interest in recent weeks. The Gunners have reportedly identified Alvarez as a potential 'Plan C' should they fail in pursuit of their two top targets, Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko, in the transfer market. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. But Alvarez and his family are believed to be settled in the Spanish capital and it seems the 2022 World Cup winner is not even thinking about upping sticks ahead of Atleti's Club World Cup campaign. After naming Atleti as one the 'best teams in the world' set to compete this summer's 32-team tournament, Alvarez told DAZN: 'I'm very excited about it. 'Being there, representing the league with this club, will be great, especially considering how happy the club's fans are to take part in this competition. 'There will be teams from all over the world with different cultures and different playing styles because there are teams from various continents. 'It will bring together 32 teams for a great tournament.' Alvarez is relishing the chance to represent Atleti on the global stage, with a shot at silverware at stake. He added: 'The goal is to compete and win. We know it will be a tough tournament, but we will prepare as well as possible and try to go as far as we can. 'We are aware that this club has fans all over the world and they always send us their best wishes and support via social media. 'I'm sure there will be Atletico Madrid fans in the United States and it's a great opportunity for them to cheer us on.' Earlier this week, Atleti head coach Diego Simeone suggested it was only 'logical' that the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool were interesting in signing an 'extraordinary player' like Alvarez. 'It's logical, I can't imagine any other scenario,' Simeone told Argentine outlet La Nacion. 'Julian is 25-years-old, he's an extraordinary player, with hunger, with enthusiasm, with humility, with work, with goals, with status. 'How could everyone not want him? And Barcelona, PSG, Arsenal, Liverpool… the best have to want him. 'And for us, Atletico fans, it should be a source of pride that everyone wants him. 'Why? Because he's ours. And since he's ours, we have to take care of him. We have to help him feel happy. 'How will he feel happy? By winning. And to get there, we all have to give 110 per cent. And not just for him, of course, but for everyone.' On a recent episode of The Overlap, Thierry Henry fuelled rumours linking Arsenal with Alvarez, picking out the former City attacker as one of his 'favourite nines' on the planet. Asked which striker could help steer Mikel Arteta's side to the Premier League title, the legendary ex-Arsenal forward replied: 'One of my favourite nines out there at the minute is Julian Alvarez. 'We've been talking about it: putting pressure on, playing it long, low, whatever you want to do. 'You see the free-kick he scored the other day? He can hold the ball alone. 'He played at the Olympic Games, he played the Copa America and I don't hear him saying he's tired. 'The way he plays it, I just like him. But it is possible [that Arsenal can sign him]? I don't know.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
