By: Hayati Dzulkifli Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government continues to boost the livelihoods of local fishermen through various assistance programs, regardless of their registration with local Area Fishermen Associations (PNK), said Assistant Minister II Datuk Peto Galim. He said initiatives under the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry include equipment aid like boats, engines, nets, GPS units, and life jackets, especially for poor and hardcore poor fishermen. As of 2024, Sabah has 26,682 fishermen, with 5,158 in Semporna. Six Semporna fishermen received direct aid this year, with another 12 expected to benefit soon. Through Ko-Nelayan, the ministry also offers microcredit via i-Nelayan (up to RM10,000 for fishing gear) and i-Hiliran (up to RM100,000 for fish-based product operators). From 2024–2025, eight Semporna fishermen and 13 downstream operators benefited from these schemes. Fishermen also receive free SKM-certified training in skills such as boat building and engine maintenance, while the e-SMART app and e-KAN platform help them locate fishing spots and sell products online. To date, eight Semporna fishermen use e-SMART, while 16 local operators on e-KAN have recorded RM5.23 million in sales. 'These efforts show our ongoing commitment to improving the well-being of fishermen in Sabah, especially in Semporna,' Peto said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Textile shops in KL found using unverified measuring tools

KUALA LUMPUR: Several textile shops in the federal capital were found using measuring tools that had not been verified by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), exposing consumers to the risk of fraud when purchasing fabric. KPDN Kuala Lumpur director Mohd Sabri Seman said the unverified rulers used at the premises did not meet the required standards, which could affect consumer rights and create opportunities for fraudulent practices. 'Rulers used for measuring fabric must comply with specifications, including having metal at both ends and a certification label from KPDN,' he told reporters after leading an enforcement operation at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman here today. The operation, which began at noon, involved inspection at 35 premises. Seven compounds were issued for various offences under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 and the Weights and Measures Act 1972, amounting to RM7,000 in total. Of these, three premises were found to be using unverified measuring tools, while four others failed to display price tags. Mohd Sabri said that 272 cases involving offences related to price marking and the use of unverified weighing and measuring instruments have been detected since the beginning of this year, with a compound value of almost RM100,000 issued. He advised consumers to remain vigilant and to report any suspected misuse of controlled goods, sale of counterfeit products, or non-compliance by traders with the law. 'We also hope traders will consistently comply with the laws enforced by the agency to ensure that business transactions are carried out fairly and transparently,' he added. – Bernama

Chong tells state govt to focus on 13MP's proposed RM100 mln KIA expansion, ditch new mega project

Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen said federal Transport Minister Anthony Loke had in a written reply in parliament revealed a proposal to allocate an estimated RM100 million for KIA's expansion under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). According to Chong, the proposed upgrading under the 13MP's first rolling plan would take KIA's capacity from the present five million passengers per annum (MPPA) to eight MPPA. 'With this proposed expansion plan, that will increase the capacity of KIA by another 60 per cent,' he said in a statement. He pointed out that Loke also stated the final approval of the expansion plan would depend on the availability of funds as well as the direction of the state government, which has undertaken a feasibility study for the proposed new KIA at Tanjung Embang. 'While the proposed allocation of RM100 million may not pose a big hurdle as such a sum is very small compared to annual budget of the federal government, it is the direction and intention of the state government which may be a main impediment to the expansion of the existing KIA,' the Padungan assemblyman said. 'I thus call upon the state government to take the more immediate and practical approach to focus on the expansion of the existing KIA (which costs RM100 million and can effectively serve Kuching for another 15 to 20 years) instead of pushing for the construction of a new KIA, which is estimated to cost another RM10,000 million (one hundred times more expensive) and stalling the plan to expand the current KIA.' According to Chong, the state government may want to proceed with building the new KIA and not request for the expansion of the existing airport. 'We know that Sarawak is rich. But there is still a limit to our wealth. We should not repeat the folly of the federal government under Tun (Dr) Mahathir (Mohamad) in the late 80s and 90s with its uninhibited spending on mega projects, thus turning Malaysia into a debt-ridden country and making us, the future generations of the 80s and 90s, to pay for their extravagance,' he added. In January, Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg announced Sarawak's new state-of-the-art international airport will be in Tanjung Embang, Samarahan near the deep-sea port currently under development in the area. The Sarawak government has since appointed Netherlands Airport Consultants as lead consultant for a feasibility study on the new airport, which is scheduled to be completed by February next year. Rising Cocoa Prices Spark Strong Return Potential For Growers -- LKM

REGION - SARAWAK > NEWS KUCHING, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- World cocoa prices are currently on the rise, thus making the crop a commodity with high potential to generate lucrative returns. The Malaysian Cocoa Board (LKM) in a statement today said that in 2024, the average price of dry cocoa beans grew by 141 per cent to RM24,274 per tonne compared to RM10,073 per tonne in the previous year. 'The Cocoa Cultivation Promotion Programme for the Plantation Sector will be implemented by the board from 2025 to 2030 with an allocation of RM550,000 per year. bootstrap slideshow 'Via this programme, LKM will distribute high-quality cocoa seedlings for free, provide technical guidance, practical training and continuous monitoring to ensure that cocoa planting is carried out according to the best agricultural practices,' the board said. So far, it said, several Malaysian plantation companies have participated in the programme, with a total area of 360 hectares. Companies selected to participate in the programme would receive incentives in the form of 5,000 high-quality cocoa seedlings worth RM50,000, in addition to technical advisory services including nursery development, planting systems and others, it said. 'Within five years, the programme aims to expand the cocoa plantation area by 2,750 hectares nationwide. 'The plantation sector is an important driver in increasing cocoa production sustainably to meet the demand of local manufacturers, while supporting efforts to make Malaysia a producer of premium cocoa and 'single origin' cocoa beans, which are increasingly gaining traction in the world market,' said LKM. Earlier, LKM organised the Cocoa Cultivation Promotion Engagement Programme for the Plantation Sector for the Sarawak Region here today.
