
How the absence of safe spaces for Black women forges injustice

On the 3rd of August 2018, a young law student at Rhodes University took her own life.
Khensani Maseko, who was just 23 years old, had endured sexual violence at the hands of a fellow student. Her decision to take her own life came just days after she had reported the incident, which had occurred three months prior, to the authorities at the university.
Unable to bear the pain, she travelled home to Johannesburg with her family to seek mental health support. On that cold August morning, she wrote on her Instagram page: 'No one deserves to be raped!', and just hours later, she would end her young life. Following her death, protests ignited across various South African universities, with students demanding greater investment in mental health support services.
Earlier this year, on the 8th of January, Dr. Antoinette Candia-Bailey, who was serving as the Vice President for Student Affairs at Lincoln University in the state of Missouri in the United States, tragically took her own life after being subjected to bullying by the university's leadership.
Like Khensani, Dr. Candia-Bailey had reported the struggles that she was battling with weeks prior, and just days before she ended her life, she had sent an email out to several people detailing her deteriorating mental health due to the toxic work environment she was forced to navigate.
As with the case of Khensani, Dr. Candia-Bailey's untimely death resulted in protests and a national discussion on the treatment of Black women in academia.
These two cases may have occurred in two different geographical contexts, at different times, and for different reasons.
But there is a common denominator between them that cannot be ignored – two Black women, having endured traumatic events and feeling unsupported, opted to take their own lives.
Both women were gifted, with Khensani having served in the Students' Representative Council of Rhodes University and Dr. Candia-Bailey having achieved significant feats in her journey as an academic administrator, including becoming the first Vice President of student affairs and Chief Diversity Officer at the highly respected Elms College in Massachusetts.
Their deaths, and those of many other Black women, compel us to think critically about the state of mental health among Black women, and just as importantly, the progress that has been made in the provision of mental health resources for them.
Seven years since the devastating loss of Khensani, South Africa is still grappling with the growing rates of mental illness and suicide among young women. Research indicates that a substantial percentage of young women in South Africa experience mental health issues.
A 2021 study by Mthiyane and various other scholars found a 22.2% point prevalence of probable common mental disorders among rural adolescent girls and young women. This aligns with studies, including a 2024 report by the National Planning Commission, which indicates that in South Africa, mental health challenges are a significant concern among young women in particular.
The studies indicate high prevalence rates of common mental disorders like depression and anxiety, and an increased risk for those experiencing trauma, HIV, or facing socio-economic hardship.
South African women experience mental health problems more acutely than men due to a complex interplay of factors, including high rates of violence and abuse, socio-economic challenges, and the disproportionate burden of caregiving responsibilities.
These factors create what researchers refer to as 'a perfect storm of stressors' that can negatively impact mental well-being. What has also emerged from mental health literature in South Africa is that common mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression are seen beyond the racial and class divide, even as Black women are most affected.
Professor Simone Honikman from the University of Cape Town and the founder of the Perinatal Mental Health Project (PMHP) explaining it in the context of perinatal women, contends that the core social determinants of mental unwellness in our country include poverty, food insecurity, intimate partner violence, domestic violence, discrimination, social isolation and marginalisation, experiences of adverse childhood events and trauma, and a lack of safety and security.
These social determinants extend beyond perinatal women, and more significantly, are both gendered and racialised. Their impact on women in the domestic and workspaces is significant.
Black women, confronted with experiences of trauma, discrimination, economic violence and social isolation, are especially affected by mental health challenges. The data is unambiguous on this.
The implication is that women in South Africa, particularly Black women, are in need of not just mental health support but also safe spaces in which they can exist as fully human. The creation of such spaces is critical if we are to arrest the growing crisis of Black women's mental health challenges in both the productive and the reproductive space.
It is especially important that Black women are provided the necessary support to facilitate their empowerment because it is only when Black women are supported and empowered that we can begin to forge communities that thrive. Such communities must be built on material and non-material support, anchored on psychological safety.
In the second part of this conversation, we will explore the meaning of psychological safety and locate it within the context of the support required to achieve women's empowerment.
We will answer the question: 'What are safe spaces for Black women and how can these be created in South Africa?' Defining safe spaces and engaging in a process of co-creation of these spaces is a necessary step towards protecting and supporting young Black women.
The death of Khensani and so many others like her, who felt unsupported, in Africa and beyond, should be a reminder of the kind of society we do not want.

A mom's plea: 'you can save my son'
With less than 200 000 South Africans registered as stem cell donors – and even fewer from Black communities – the odds are stacked against Black children. Bonakele never imagined that motherhood would mean becoming a full-time caregiver, medical advocate and voice for survival. But for the past two years, she's been fighting relentlessly for her two-year-old son, who has a rare genetic disease and whose life now depends on finding a matching stem cell donor. 'I knew something wasn't right from when he was just three months old,' she recalls. 'He had recurring boils, infections, and was always in and out of the clinic. But nothing prepared me for the diagnosis.' Her son was eventually diagnosed with Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome (WAS), a life-threatening condition that weakens the immune system and impairs blood clotting. Without treatment, most children don't survive into adulthood. 'I've already lost a child,' Bonakele says. 'I wake up every day with that memory in my heart and the fear that I could lose another. People ask how my son is doing, but they forget to ask how I'm doing. The truth is, I'm exhausted, I'm scared… but I have to stay strong for him.' A stem cell transplant is her son's best and only chance. When performed early – ideally before the age of five – it can offer a survival rate of over 90%. But the biggest challenge is finding a matching donor. 'This is why we're sharing Bonakele's story,' says Palesa Mokomele, Head of Community Engagement and Communications at DKMS Africa, a nonprofit dedicated to fighting blood cancers and blood disorders. The hidden costs of SAB's legacy on SA's most vulnerable communities
South African Breweries (SAB) recently purchased space in Daily Maverick to publish sponsored content, beginning with a piece appropriately titled '130 Years, SAB's Legacy Is South Africa's Story'. It's true: South Africa's story is closely interwoven with SAB's legacy as a South African alcohol producer and marketer, but it begs the question: Which parts of their legacy and our story are they proudest of? Let us consider a few. We have the world's highest rate of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), with an average of 11 out of every 100 children born with this condition, and in some communities this rate goes up to 28% of children. Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder describes physical, behavioural and learning conditions that can occur in persons who were exposed to alcohol while in the womb. Depending on the severity, they are at risk of experiencing every challenge that makes it harder to grow up and be a useful, contributing member of our society. They are typically a burden to their mothers, families, teachers and peers. They risk dropping out of school, engaging in antisocial and criminal behaviour and of experiencing lifelong problems with substance abuse and addiction. Alcohol stunts and damages growing brains. There is no safe amount of alcohol to consume during pregnancy. Unplanned pregnancy Pregnant girls and women typically admit to drinking in the first three months of unexpected pregnancy, before they know that they are pregnant. In many instances, foetal alcohol effects are associated with teenage and unplanned pregnancy. Children who become pregnant are often engaged in illegal, underage drinking. Alcohol causes a loss of inhibitions. It is harder to make good decisions when drinking or drunk, and this increases vulnerability to opportunistic sexual advances or sexual violence. Alcohol warnings on packaging don't extend to girls and women who may be sexually active and not on contraception. Is this the legacy that SAB is proud to share with South Africa? They claim in the same sponsored content that they do good work to minimise some of these problems. Let us be clear, this is no more than a version of the arsonist firefighter, who sets the fire and then wants to be hailed a hero for putting it out. As is the case with fires, Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is much easier to ignite than to douse. Recent studies estimate that alcohol contributes to 80% of deaths of young men in South Africa. We often refer to interpersonal and gender-based violence in South Africa as a 'hidden pandemic'. Alcohol is associated with almost all such incidents. The social and economic cost to the criminal justice system, the health system and other government programmes is overwhelming, with estimates of actual costs being between 8 and 10% of GDP. Is it this bit that SAB is proudest of? Or is it the link between alcohol, road crashes and deaths, including those of drunk pedestrians? Or the relationship between alcohol and sexually transmitted diseases? Or is that SAB's profitability partially depends on binge drinking? A total of 70% of in-school teenagers self-report that they have participated in binge drinking. Or that their brilliant innovations teach children to normalise a taste for alcohol, knowing that the younger they start, the more likely they are to binge drink as teenagers and to go on to have troubled relationships with alcohol, some for the rest of their lives? Or that 13% of all deaths in South Africa have a direct link to alcohol consumption? SAB has over time used our sporting heroes (the 'brand behind our boys' — and now our girls and women too), our national flag, and even the 'rain down in Africa', to advertise and associate itself with the aspirations of our young people, notably now girls, who have always tended to lag behind boys in consumption. SAB can afford to, when many others cannot, because it has made its products desirable and accessible to young people and new drinkers. While it is estimated that fewer than 40% of South African adults drink alcohol, those who do are the most prolific in Africa and are right up there with the world's biggest consumers of alcohol. The majority of drinkers drink beer. Many drinkers are dependent on alcohol and are customers for life. SAB has very publicly associated itself with and sponsored our law enforcement agencies in carefully worded 'don't drink and drive' campaigns, as though the only harm associated with alcohol is behind the steering wheel, thus implicitly encouraging the idea that it doesn't matter if you get drunk and commit acts of indecency, impropriety, violence or dangerous stupidity; just as long as you don't drive. Harsh reality It has massive billboards at our airports, on our roads and in our townships. Sadly, research and the harsh reality about alcohol are neither as attractive nor as addictive as SAB's products. While it is by no means only in poor communities that we see the impact of alcohol on individuals, families, businesses, community wellbeing and society as a whole, it is often the stories of the poor that are the most honest and heartbreaking. Stories about failure, neglect and abuse — and of deprivation of children where more disposable income is spent on alcohol than on staples and school shoes. SAB is dependent on these drinkers for its success. We are a society that struggles with an economy that is at best fragile. We need to spend a lot less on alcohol. To achieve this, we need much stricter policies and regulations about price, distribution, advertising and marketing to counter the powerful alcohol lobby. For the child born with severe foetal alcohol syndrome today, to a mother who didn't want her and cannot support her, and for her family and community, it is too late to make a difference. But for our collective future, it isn't too late. It is easy to understand why the alcohol industry lobby is so powerful, and why SAB continues to thrive, with its massive advertising, marketing and promotional spend, selling aspirations to a society in which the majority do not thrive. The reality that debunks the aspirational myths is there for all to see, but it's not a pretty picture, not a comfortable one, not one on which it is easy to dwell. We, the people of South Africa, should, however, not allow ourselves to be lulled into accepting that this is the best we can be; a by-product of a narrative written by SAB, with its legacy of profit and gain at the expense of the most vulnerable. KZN government allocates R17 million for medical aid to Izinduna
The KwaZulu-Natal government will spend R17 million annually on medical aid for 300 Izinduna, raising concerns about budget allocation and funding sources. Image: Shan Pillay Medical aid for 300 Izinduna will cost the KwaZulu-Natal government R17 million per annum, money they will derive from ending a building lease agreement in Durban. The KZN Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) revealed this during a first-quarter report on 2025/26 financials to the KZN Legislature portfolio committee on Tuesday. The committee chairperson, Marlaine Nair, a DA MPL, brought up the issue because most of the CoGTA budget went to traditional leaders, and there were inadequate funds for any other projects. In the CoGTA report presented on Tuesday, remuneration of Izinduna was at 54% of the annual budget spent as of the end of the first quarter. The department receives an allocation of R187 million and still has to dip into its budget to cover the rest of the money. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Nair was concerned that CoGTA was taking money from the baseline to top up the traditional leaders' funding. She was also concerned about the introduction of medical aid funding to Izinduna. Nair suggested that the department needed to find ways to take the pressure off its budget by either getting traditional leaders paid by the National Treasury or explore ideas to generate income from traditional land for them to benefit from. 'We can have more money for oversight and support of municipalities and disaster management as well as economic development. We need to unpack ideas, deliberate on them, and find a way forward in terms of generating income for this particular department. We must not come across as insensitive or uncaring to the Izinduna,' she said. Dr Joey Krishnan, Acting HOD of CoGTA, told the committee that the department was aware that there had been very little or no investment in economic growth and development in the rural community. She said the decision on stipends for Izinduna came from the national government, adding that R400 million goes towards the stipends. 'They are on our payroll, and they are able to take up medical aid and pension funds on their own. What we found from the 300 amakhosi that are on the payroll, 35 of them opted for medical aid. The cost of the medical aid they chose was extremely high,' she said. Krishnan said that CoGTA probed the matter and decided that if all 300 Izunduna took up medical aid options, the department would not be able to afford the medical aid contributions. She said they negotiated for better rates and a concession from a medical aid company which worked out to a much lower rate in comparison to what CoGTA pays for its staff. Izinduna get immediate cover, use of any private hospital, family benefits if the member dies, and a cancer benefit.
