Rising Ravens star earns praise while another receives the cold shoulder

USA Today5 hours ago

A rising Ravens star Is missing from a list that everyone ought to be reading.
The best NFL teams have figured it out. There are different ways to build a superior roster, but to compete annually, a franchise quarterback must be located. Now, that's easier said than done. The Miami Dolphins are still trying to replace Dan Marino, and though the Baltimore Ravens came to town in 1996, it took until 2018 to land Lamar Jackson.
The journey towards the elite doesn't end with phenomenal quarterback play. It's only the beginning. Teams must invest in their offensive line, weapons for the quarterback, and elite pass rushers.
The saying is well-known. Every great team has a nice mix of drafted players and free-agent acquisitions. Eric DeCosta and his staff are certainly passing the eyeball test.
Kyle Hamilton is named among the NFL's elite young players, but where in the heck is Tyler Linderbaum?
As the Ravens begin their quest for the organization's third Lombardi Trophy, all eyes will be on the veterans: Jackson, Derrick Henry, DeAndre Hopkins, Roquan Smith, and Jaire Alexander. The latter four names on that list arrived through trades and free agency.
The scales are balanced, though. Baltimore has drafted well. Malaki Starks and Nate Wiggins are going to be stars. Mike Green is going to surprise people. Kyle Hamilton and Tyler Linderbaum are already stars.
Hamilton recently ranked 11th on CBS Sports' list of the top 25 NFL players who are 25 years old and under. While that's a respectable mention, one could argue that Linderbaum's absence is a snub, but in the meantime, here's what Cody Benjamin, the writer of this one, said about Hamilton. It's hard to disagree with this theory.
"It's almost unbelievable now that Hamilton started just four games as a rookie, because the last two seasons, he's been all over the ball at every level of the field for the Ravens. Need a timely sack? He can do it. Need a critical pass breakup? He's there. The Notre Dame product all but sets the standard for do-it-all safety play."
Players 1-10 preceding Hamilton on this list are Ja'Marr Chase, Jayden Daniels, Penei Sewell, Patrick Surtain II, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs, Sauce Gardner, Aidan Hutchinson, Brian Thomas Jr., and Derek Stingley.
Linderbaum is a two-time Pro Bowler, landing on both of the most recent rosters, and it isn't out of the realm of possibility that he could venture towards All-Pro territory. Isaiah Likely is another notable name. He's second on the tight end depth chart behind the great Mark Andrews, but it is clear that Likely has starting tight end potential.
Benjamin always does excellent work. He's undoubtedly one of the more informed voices in this field, but Linderbaum's absence from this list is certainly worth a challenge flag.

Terry McLaurin's Teammate Has Direct Message For Washington Commanders

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Last season, the Washington Commanders were one of the most shocking stories of the NFL. While there was a lot of excitement surrounding the team due to its rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels bringing a ton of hype, the Commanders weren't seen as championship contenders just yet. The former second-overall pick emerged as one of the top quarterbacks in the game, elevating all of the talent around him and helping the Commanders find major success for the first time in a long time. With last year's success comes higher expectations for the 2025 NFL season. In the eyes of the veteran running back Austin Ekeler, the Commanders are built to look like a "powerhouse." "I think there's even going to be more growth this year," Ekeler said during an appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio, according to Pro Football Talk. "[It's] awesome because of where we're at with our team and have a lot of players back. A lot of playmakers." One thing that Ekeler notes is that the Commanders have to take care of their top wide receiver, Terry McLaurin. Throughout the team's spring sessions, McLaurin skipped out as he's in search of a new contract from the organization. McLaurin is slated to make $15.5 million this year. Next season, he's set to hit the open market, but the veteran isn't interested in waiting until next year to land a new deal. He wants it now, and he wants it from the Washington Commanders. Throughout the offseason, core members of the Commanders' organization have expressed confidence in the team eventually locking in a new deal with McLaurin. Ekeler seems to be in that boat, as he counts McLaurin in for next year's run, while evaluating a potential improved season for the Commanders. Terry McLaurin #17 of the Washington Commanders celebrates after an NFL football wild card playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium on January 12, 2025 in Tampa, Florida. At 29 years old, McLaurin remains one of the most consistent wide receivers in the game. Since he posted 919 yards during his rookie season in 2019, McLaurin has exceeded 1,000 yards every year since. Six years in, McLaurin has 6,379 yards and 86 touchdowns on his resume. He's a two-time Pro Bowler and a Second-Team All-Pro. As for Ekeler, he's heading into year two with the Commanders. Last season, the veteran running back played in 12 games. He picked up 77 carries and totaled 367 yards on the ground. He finished the year with four touchdowns in the running game. In the air, Ekeler caught 35 passes for 366 yards. What are reasonable expectations for Jets TE Mason Taylor's rookie season?

Rookie TE Mason Taylor#Jets | 🎥 @nyjets The New York Jets selected tight end Mason Taylor with the No. 42 overall selection in the second round of the 2025 NFL draft. Taylor projects as an immediate difference maker in Tanner Engstrand's offense. Tight end is typically among the most difficult positions when transitioning from college to the pros, but we've witnessed a historic amount of success in recent seasons. Sam LaPorta rewrote the record books in 2023 when he recorded 86 receptions for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns as a rookie. Brock Bowers exceeded that in 2024, setting NFL records for receptions (112) and receiving yards (1,194) by a tight end in a rookie season. It would be unfair to expect Taylor to reach those heights, but he should be heavily involved in Engstand's passing attack. The Jets lack a clear-cut No. 2 receiver behind Garrett Wilson. It's well within the realm of possibility that Taylor is effectively Justin Fields' second-most targeted pass catcher. Taylor displayed athleticism at the NFL Combine. The former LSU standout ran the 40-yard dash in 4.65 seconds. Taylor also posted 28 reps on the bench press, and ran a 7.06 three-cone. The Plantation, Florida native recorded 55 receptions for 546 yards and two touchdowns for the Tigers this past season. The Jets drafted Taylor with a premium second-round selection to upgrade their passing attack. He'll immediately be their TE1, easily leapfrogging Jeremy Ruckert on the depth chart. Expectations should be fairly high for Taylor's rookie campaign.

The team has played in London before, but Ireland will be a first. As of Wednesday morning, tickets are still available for the Sept. 28 contest against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Dublin's Croke Park. This will be the first regular-season NFL game played in Ireland, and only the second NFL game played in the country since 1997's preseason match-up between the Steelers and the Chicago Bears. Vikings fans were among the thousands scrambling to score tickets for the showdown in Dublin. "Demand vastly outstripped the supply of tickets," said Conor Brophy, host of the NFL Irish Podcast. "It was over 600,000 people in the queue at one stage. There's only 76,000 tickets available for the game." Vikings fans are flooding social media, posting photos of their purple gear, looking for tickets and asking for advice on where to stay, what to do and how to have fun in Dublin. Brophy says he's counting the days. "The excitement here is palpable," he said. "We've seen fandom for the game grow, and people have come to it from many different directions." WCCO Where there's a draw, there's a price. Tickets range from about $100 to $600. If you book through the team's site, they have all-inclusive packages starting at $1,300 per person. Locally, Irish fans are embracing the NFL with the same buzz as a sold-out concert tour. "The only comparable excitement that I would have seen is when Taylor Swift was coming here," Brophy said. With just under 100 days til the game, talk about a "Cruel Summer." But that gives Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell time to prepare. He says he's ready for the challenge on the field and off. "When you think about opportunities to play in unique atmospheres, what better way to do that?" O'Connell said. With scam sites popping up fast, fans are being told if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Kickoff in Dublin will be at 8:30 a.m. CST, or 2:30 p.m. IST. And the team returns to London just days later to face the Cleveland Browns at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Minnesota is 4-0 in regular season games in London, including wins against the Steelers in 2013 and the Browns in 2017. The Vikings also played four international exhibition games in the '80s and '90s, winning all as well. , and contributed to this report.
