Published on: Sun, Jun 22, 2025 Text Size: Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) must explain why only two state assemblymen will be charged, despite viral video clips previously raising questions about the possible involvement of more individuals. Muda Sabah State Executive Committee said in a statement it acknowledged the confirmation by MACC that three individuals, including two assemblymen, will be charged in connection with the investigation into the mineral mining licence scandal. 'This is an important initial step, but it is far from sufficient. 'We emphasise three key points, firstly that anyone involved in giving or receiving bribes must be held accountable under the law including if the individual also acts as a whistleblower. The incident involved a Perodua Axia driven by a 55-year-old local man who collided with two girls, aged 12 and 7, as they were crossing the road. City Police Chief ACP Kasim Muda said the impact of the crash caused the death of one child at the scene, while the other suffered head injuries and is receiving medical attention at Likas Hospital. 'Her condition is reported to be stable. The driver was uninjured. Preliminary investigations suggest that he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the incident. 'However, a toxicology sample has been taken for further analysis,' he said in a statement, adding that a case has been opened under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. The police are urging witnesses to come forward with any information that could aid in the investigation. PAPAR: Nine men aged between 19 and 50 were rounded up following a brawl in a restaurant at Palm Square, Kinarut, on Sunday. District Police Chief Supt Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka said police received a call at 6pm regarding a fight involving a Pakistani national and a local Indian. He said initial investigations revealed that the local called the name of the foreigner, a restaurant operator, in a rude tone which led to an argument. 'A fight then broke out between them, prompting their friends to intervene, which led to the situation getting out of control. 'The fight was said to have turned ugly when both parties used restaurant chairs and sticks as weapons and hit each other. The fight was broken up by the public,' he added. Kamaruddin said the misunderstanding between both parties started a week before the incident when the restaurant owner sold scrap metal to the local, a scrap metal business owner. The case is being investigated under Section 148 and Section 60 of the Penal Code. 'We urge those with information regarding the incident to contact Sergeant Mazlan Mali at 013-656 4978 or visit the nearest police station,' said Kamaruddin. MACC arrests five including officers in illegal foreign worker registration scam

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained five individuals, including three enforcement officers, for their suspected involvement in illegal foreign worker registration under the Immigration Department's Labour Recalibration Programme (RTK). The arrests were made in Putrajaya and Kelantan between 11 am and 2.30 pm on Monday (June 23). A source revealed that the three officers, comprising two men and a woman, allegedly accepted bribes ranging from RM50,000 to RM60,000 to process foreign worker applications. The other two suspects include a company manager and a foreign national. All are believed to have committed the offences between 2020 and 2021. The operation, codenamed Op Putih, was conducted by the MACC Intelligence Division in Kelantan to dismantle syndicate activities involving immigration officers and foreign agents. The crackdown aims to curb corruption among civil servants and disrupt networks facilitating illegal worker registrations. Magistrate Amin Rashidi Ramli granted a seven-day remand order for all suspects following an application by MACC at the Kota Bahru Magistrate's Court. Senior director of MACC's Intelligence Division, Datuk Idris Zaharudin, confirmed the arrests, stating the case is being probed under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
