PAPAR: Nine men aged between 19 and 50 were rounded up following a brawl in a restaurant at Palm Square, Kinarut, on Sunday. District Police Chief Supt Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka said police received a call at 6pm regarding a fight involving a Pakistani national and a local Indian. He said initial investigations revealed that the local called the name of the foreigner, a restaurant operator, in a rude tone which led to an argument. 'A fight then broke out between them, prompting their friends to intervene, which led to the situation getting out of control. 'The fight was said to have turned ugly when both parties used restaurant chairs and sticks as weapons and hit each other. The fight was broken up by the public,' he added. Kamaruddin said the misunderstanding between both parties started a week before the incident when the restaurant owner sold scrap metal to the local, a scrap metal business owner.

The case is being investigated under Section 148 and Section 60 of the Penal Code. 'We urge those with information regarding the incident to contact Sergeant Mazlan Mali at 013-656 4978 or visit the nearest police station,' said Kamaruddin. On Sunday, a one-minute-24-second video on the brawl went viral on Sunday, showing the fight started in the restaurant before it went to the street. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Vietnam abolishes death penalty for 8 crimes in revised Penal Code

HANOI: Vietnam's National Assembly on Wednesday passed a revised Penal Code, abolishing the death penalty for eight crimes, including embezzlement, reported Xinhua quoting a Vietnam News Agency report. The revision law also allows life-term sentences for embezzlement or bribery, which may be reduced only if offenders return at least three-fourths of the assets and actively assist authorities or make major contributions, according to the report. Under the revised law, the death penalty will be eliminated for other seven crimes, including subversion, sabotage of infrastructure, counterfeit drug trafficking, illegal drug transport, war aggression, espionage, and bribery, the report added. Minister of Justice Nguyen Hai Ninh said the amended law will help strengthen cooperative relations based on mutual trust, while reflecting the responsibility and capacity of state management and judicial agencies in the current context. The amended law will take effect from July 1, 2025.

MACC to challenge Syed Saddiq acquittal at Federal Court

Published on: Wednesday, June 25, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 25, 2025 By: Muhammad Yusry, Malay Mail Text Size: PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today said the prosecution will challenge the Court of Appeal's decision to overturn Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman's corruption conviction and sentence handed down by the High Court. MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) in charge had informed him that there had been plans to take the case to the Federal Court regardless of today's outcome at the Court of Appeal. 'I was informed earlier by the prosecutor that they will be filing an appeal to the Federal Court,' he said in a press conference at MACC's headquarters here. 'The DPP informed me that if a different decision had been made, an appeal to the Federal Court would still have been pursued,' he added. When asked for his thoughts on the court's decision, Azam said he holds no personal feelings towards those involved in the cases he investigates. 'I do not feel disappointed or pleased when I investigate any case,' he said. Advertisement Earlier today, Syed Saddiq was acquitted of four charges relating to the misappropriation of funds belonging to Bersatu's youth wing, Armada. A three-member Court of Appeal (CoA) panel led by Justice Datuk Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim said the decision was unanimous. Delivering the court's decision, Justice Noorin said that High Court Judge Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid had erred in several decisions, and that there was no element of dishonesty when the former Youth and Sports Minister instructed his staff to remove money from Armada's bank accounts. She said the trial judge did not take into account the procedures and contradictory evidence, and also took into account evidence given by witnesses under duress from MACC. - Malay Mail * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
