Karnataka minister to meet Rajnath seeking defence corridor
Karnataka minister MB Patil on Tuesday said he would meet defence minister Rajnath Singh to urge the centre to allocate an aerospace and defence corridor to the state on the basis of merit, a day after raising concerns about Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu's reported attempts to relocate major defence production projects of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) from Karnataka to Andhra Pradesh.
'Our state's contribution to the nation in the aerospace and defence sector is 65%. Therefore, the Aerospace and Defense Corridor should be given to our state on the basis of merit. I will soon meet the Honourable Defense Minister, Shri Rajnath Singh, and once again urge him to give the Defense Corridor to Karnataka,' he said in a post on social media platform X.
'The Central Government sanctioned a defence corridor for Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu 2 years ago, and we have no objection to this,' the post added.
Karnataka deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar on Tuesday said that the state government would not allow the shifting of HAL production units out of Bengaluru in response to Naidu's proposal to relocate HAL's advanced production facilities to his state.
'I don't want to comment on whatever they demand. I want Parliament members and Central ministers to react to this, but as the government, we will not allow anything to be shifted. We will give land if they want to expand,' Shivakumar told reporters here.
'They can get any new thing if they want, we will not come in their way, but as far as Karnataka is concerned, HAL is our pride, Nehruji gave this to us,' he added.
Meanwhile, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday approved the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) Programme Execution Model, a key step to boost India's indigenous defence capabilities and strengthen the domestic aerospace industry, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said in an official statement.

Karnataka Soaps to distribute essential kits to 10,000 forest guards
Bengaluru: Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL), a prestigious public enterprise, will launch a CSR initiative to distribute essential kits to 10,000 forest guards across the state. The programme will be inaugurated in Mysuru on Wednesday by Large and Medium Industries Minister MB Patil at 2 pm at the Conference Hall of Mysuru Open University. Minister Patil stated that KSDL's CSR fund of Rs 2 crore for the year 2024–25 has been utilised for this initiative. The essential kit comprises a bag, jerkin, shoes, and a water bottle, which will be distributed to forest guards, forest watchers, mahouts, kavadis, and drivers working with the Forest Department. 'Mysore Sandal Soap, KSDL's flagship product, uses sandalwood oil as its key ingredient. It is the forest guards who protect this precious natural resource. As a gesture of gratitude towards these guardians of our forests, this initiative is KSDL's way of giving back,' Patil said. On Wednesday, kits will be distributed to 2,168 personnel from the Chamarajanagar and Mysuru forest circles. Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre, KSDL Chairman CS Nadagouda, State Wildlife Board Member Dhruv Patil, and other local public representatives will attend the event. Distribution of kits to forest department staff in other regions of the state will follow in the coming days, the minister added. The jerkins and shoes have been procured as per individual measurements collected in advance. Of the 10,000 beneficiaries, about 5,000 are regular employees, while the rest are on a casual basis, Patil informed.

Move to make India global EV hub
New Delhi: The Central government on Monday notified guidelines for its forward-looking scheme to enable fresh investments from global manufacturers in the electric cars segment and promote India as a global manufacturing hub for e-vehicles. To encourage global manufacturers such as US tech giant Tesla to invest under the scheme, the approved applicants will be allowed to import completely built-in units (CBUs) of electric four-wheelers with a minimum CIF (cost insurance and freight value) of $35,000 at reduced customs duty of 15 per cent for a period of 5 years from the date that the application is approved. Union Heavy Industries Minister H D Kumaraswamy said on Monday that Mercedes Benz, Skoda-Volkswagen (VW), Hyundai, and Kia have shown keen interest in manufacturing their electric vehicles (EVs) in India. The minister further said that the application window for the Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Electric Passenger Cars in India (SPMEPCI) will open soon. Approved applicants would be required to make a minimum investment of Rs 4,150 crore in line with the provisions of the maximum number of e-4Ws allowed to be imported at the reduced duty rate will be capped at 8,000 units per year. The carryover of unutilised annual import limits would be permitted. According to the notification, the maximum number of EVs to be imported under this scheme will be such that the maximum duty foregone per applicant will be limited to Rs 6,484 crore, or the committed investment of the applicant of a minimum of Rs 4,150 crore, whichever is lower. Expenditure incurred on new plant, machinery, equipment and associated utilities, and engineering R&D would be scheme shall help to attract investments from global EV manufacturers and promote India as a manufacturing destination for e-vehicles. The scheme will also help put India on the global map for manufacturing of EVs, generate employment and achieve the goal of 'Make in India', according to the official landmark initiative is aligned with India's national goals of achieving net zero by 2070.
