Ringgit rebounds against US dollar on improved risk appetite
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit rebounded to close higher against the US dollar today, supported by improved risk appetite for the local note despite prevailing global uncertainties.
At 6 pm, the local note rose to 4.2215/2275 versus the US dollar from Tuesday's close of 4.2345/2430.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the greenback is looking weaker at the moment despite stronger United States (US) economic data and the recent tariff-related trade policy shifts.
"Concurrently, foreign investor confidence in Malaysia has been gradually improving, underpinned by a pragmatic fiscal consolidation strategy that supports a cautiously optimistic outlook.
"The government remains prudent in advancing fiscal reforms, targeting a reduction in the budget deficit to approximately three per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) and maintaining the statutory debt limit at 65 per cent of GDP over the medium term,' he told Bernama.
Afzanizam noted that US economic data looked favourable last night with the US Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index climbing to 98.0 points in May from 85.7 points in April.
"The postponement of the US tariff on the EU to July 9 also implies that the US President Donald Trump's administration is receptive and willing to negotiate for better terms,' he added.
At the close, the ringgit traded higher against a basket of major currencies.
It rose against the Japanese yen to 2.9271/9315 from Tuesday's close of 2.9425/9486, gained vis-à-vis the euro to 4.7838/7906 from 4.8053/8150 yesterday and appreciated against the British pound to 5.7028/7109 from 5.7352/7467 previously.
The local note also traded higher against its ASEAN peers.
It strengthened against the Singapore dollar to 3.2776/2825 from 3.2894/2963 on Tuesday and inched up against the Thai baht to 2.9355/9614 from 12.9365/9676 yesterday.
The ringgit edged higher vis-à-vis the Philippine peso to 7.60/7.62 from 7.62/7.64 at yesterday's close and rose versus the Indonesian rupiah to 259.0/259.5 from 259.9/260.6 previously. - Bernama

Billion-dollar battery plant pauses construction in U.S. amid electric vehicle, tariff uncertainty
NEW YORK, June 6 (Xinhua) -- A Japanese company has halted construction on a 1.6 billion U.S. dollars factory in South Carolina to help make batteries for electric BMWs, citing "policy and market uncertainty," reported The Associated Press on Friday. "While Automotive Energy Supply Corp. (AESC) didn't specify what those problems are, South Carolina's Republican governor said the company is dealing with the potential loss of federal tax breaks for electric vehicle buyers and incentives for EV businesses as well as tariff uncertainties from President Donald Trump's administration," noted the report. "What we're doing is urging caution -- let things play out because all of the these changes are taking place," Governor Henry McMaster said. AESC announced the suspension in construction of its plant in Florence on Thursday. "Due to policy and market uncertainty, we are pausing construction at our South Carolina facility at this time," the company's statement said. AESC promised to restart construction, although it didn't say when, and vowed to meet its commitment to hire 1,600 workers and invest 1.6 billion dollars. The company said it has already invested 1 billion dollars in the Florence plant. The battery maker based in Japan also has facilities in China, the United Kingdom, France, Spain and Germany. In the United States, AESC has a plant in Tennessee and is building one in Kentucky. The statement didn't mention any changes with other plants.

X plays up blue checkmark disclaimer to stave off possible EU fine, source says
The new logo of Twitter is seen in this illustration taken, July 24, 2023. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo BRUSSELS (Reuters) -Elon Musk's social media company X has highlighted a disclaimer to its blue checkmark in an attempt to head off a possible hefty fine from EU antitrust regulators, a person familiar with the matter said. The European Commission in July last year charged X with deceiving users, saying that the blue checkmark does not correspond to industry practices and that anyone can pay to get a "verified" status. The blue checkmark had previously indicated that an account belonged to a public figure whose identity was verified but Musk changed it to indicate it belonged to a paid subscriber after acquiring X in 2022. X has not admitted wrongdoing and the prominent display of the blue checkmark disclaimer is not part of any settlement proposal with the EU tech enforcer, the person said. The prominent display started a week ago. The Commission said it took note of X's announcement. "Our investigation related to the blue checkmark is ongoing," a spokesperson said. X did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment. The EU probe is under the Digital Services Act which requires large online platforms to do more to tackle illegal and harmful content or risk fines as much as 6% of their global annual revenue. Bloomberg was the first to report on the blue checkmark disclaimer. (Reporting by Foo Yun Chee; editing by David Evans)

MCMC Clarifies Mobile Phone Data Collection Amid Media Reports, Ensures Privacy
KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has clarified its collection of mobile phone data (MPD) from Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), assuring that no Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is accessed, processed, or disclosed. The clarification comes amid recent media reports regarding the matter. In a statement today, MCMC said MPD was used strictly for the generation of official statistics to support evidence-based policymaking in two key domains, namely the ICT Sector and the Tourism Sector. For the ICT Sector, MPD helps produce granular statistics, such as the number of active mobile broadband subscriptions and penetration rates at the state, district, mukim, parliamentary constituency, state legislative assembly (DUN), and local authority levels. For the Tourism Sector, it generates indicators such as the number of visitors and domestic tourism trips. 'The MPD data requested from MNOs is anonymised and contains no PII. 'In addition, MNOs are given the option to either process the MPD data within their own secure environment and submit the required anonymised and aggregated output to MCMC, or, for MNOs without in-house processing capabilities, to submit the anonymised data to MCMC for processing. 'In both cases, no individual subscriber can be identified through the data collected,' it said. MCMC further clarified that the use of MPD as a new source of national statistics was a strategic direction set by the government to strengthen the quality and timeliness of statistical outputs for policy and planning purposes. Implementation of MPD is through collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the UN Committee of Experts on Big Data and Data Science, it added. Over the past two years, MCMC said extensive engagement with all MNOs had been carried out to ensure mutual understanding of the data requirements, processes, and privacy safeguards.
