Bayern's Bundesliga crown up for grabs after rocky summer

The Citizen14 hours ago
Winners of 12 of the past 13 Bundesliga titles, Bayern occupy their usual role as favourites for the crown.
Pretenders to the crown Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen and cup holders Stuttgart are priming themselves for a run at Bayern Munich's Bundesliga title after a frustrating summer transfer window for the Bavarian giants.
Bayern travel to Stuttgart on Saturday for the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup — the season opener which pits the defending league champions against the reigning German Cup victors.
Winners of 12 of the past 13 Bundesliga titles, Bayern occupy their usual role as favourites for the crown.
This summer, however, the 34-time league champions have not had everything go their own way.
Efforts to lure Florian Wirtz away from Leverkusen fell flat, with the German footballer of the year opting rather for a move to the Premier League and Liverpool.
Although Bayern secured attacker Luis Diaz from the English champions, they lost Thomas Mueller, Leroy Sane and Eric Dier on free transfers.
Kingsley Coman is set for a move to Saudi Arabia, Mathys Tel made his Spurs loan permanent and efforts to sign Germany striker Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart have been rebuffed.
Speaking with the Bundesliga website on Thursday, Bayern captain Joshua Kimmich said the shifting sands across the league this summer made it hard to see who would be their main rivals.
'We'll see who knocks at the top. For us, it will be important to go our own way. We can't influence what the others will do,' Kimmich said.
Kimmich nominated former side RB Leipzig to bounce back after a poor 2024/25 campaign, where they missed out on Europe for the first time in the top flight.
The Saxon club have brought in several young talents including winger Johan Bakayoko and midfielder Arthur Vermeeren, in former Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp's first summer transfer window as Red Bull global head of football.
'Leipzig have a good team. Because Leipzig aren't in European competition, they'll be able to concentrate on the Bundesliga,' Kimmich added.
– New-look Leverkusen –
Leverkusen, Bayern's principal rival across the past two seasons, have undergone a clear-out this summer.
Most of the main contributors to their stunning unbeaten 2023/24 league and cup double have moved on.
Wirtz, along with wing-back Jeremie Frimpong have signed with Liverpool. Midfield conductor Granit Xhaka has also moved to the Premier League, while Germany defender Jonathan Tah has joined title rivals Bayern.
The biggest loss of all, however, is coach Xabi Alonso, with the Spaniard departing to join Real Madrid.
His replacement, former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, will be looking to revive his own reputation while cobbling together a squad with several new arrivals.
Impressive last season in finishing third, Eintracht Frankfurt are also rebuilding, having lost centre-forward Hugo Ekitike to Liverpool in July, just six months after winger Omar Marmoush moved to Manchester City.
Quietly building under Bundesliga-winning coach Niko Kovac, Borussia Dortmund could again trouble old foes Bayern this term.
Kovac took over the reins in January with Dortmund flailing but helped the club rise from 11th to fourth, picking up 22 of a possible 24 points to end the season.
The addition of Jobe Bellingham will provide steel in midfield, while the only major loss is winger Jamie Gittens who moved to Chelsea, having struggled for game time under Kovac.
Cup winners Stuttgart, who finished second ahead of Bayern in 2023/24, look set to continue troubling the big guns.
Stuttgart captain Atakan Karazor told AFP and other media on Thursday: 'We have a very special team… we've got quality players in every position — even some that people haven't heard of.'
Karazor said the key man is coach Sebastian Hoeness, who has taken Stuttgart from relegation battlers to cup winners and European football in just over two years at the helm.
'An amazing, amazing coach. You can see his handwriting on everything the team does. From the moment he came in, the mindset of the team changed,' the midfielder said.

Next Stay Close ✕ "He can play different types of football," Amorim told reporters on Friday. "He is going to learn but he has a great potential and I can see Ben being a striker for Manchester United for a lot of years. "That's why we paid so much money to have a striker that will have his history in our club." Asked if Sesko could start against Arsenal, the United boss said: "We didn't have a lot of time but he's ready. "Physically, he's ready. That is a big component in our league. Then, he's really smart. Every detail that he asks, he's a guy that is always thinking. "He spends all afternoon here working on his fitness, so he's ready to play. We will see if he's going to start." Sesko scored 21 goals for German side Leipzig last term and has made a good first impression on Amorim at United's new-look Carrington training complex. "He's one guy who stays here, has lunch, and goes to the medical department, does the stretching," he said. "He is always thinking about football. He's really obsessed about that and that is a good thing because you don't have to think about that aspect with that young guy. "I don't need to tell Ben, 'Ben, this is Manchester United, a lot of pressure, you have to perform, you need to be ready for the physicality, we need to be ready, every game is like do or die'. Sesko's arrival in Manchester has raised fresh questions over the future of United striker Rasmus Hojlund. The 22-year-old Denmark international has been strongly linked with an exit, just two years on from joining from Atalanta. Hojlund said on United's pre-season tour that he wants to stay at United, but reports of a potential move to AC Milan persist. "He is one more option," Amorim said. "We will see. We are focused on this game and Rasmus is still our player." AFP Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel.

New-look Liverpool kick off Premier League season after spending spree

Premier League champions will kick off the new season when they take on Bournemouth on Friday evening. Photo: AFP Image: AFP Reigning champions Liverpool kick off the Premier League season on Friday with Europe's richest league strengthened by a remarkable £2 billion ($2.7 billion) spending splurge. Liverpool will include £100 million midfield signing Florian Wirtz and new forward Hugo Ekitike in their squad to face Bournemouth at Anfield, among a handful of new recruits. They are favourites to retain their crown but the unknown factor is the potential effect of the tragic death of Portuguese forward Diogo Jota in a car crash in Spain in July. Next Stay Close ✕ Arsenal, one club hoping to topple Liverpool, face an immediate test of their title credentials against a revamped Manchester United on Sunday. Newcastle are set to be without unsettled star striker Alexander Isak for a tough trip to Aston Villa -- the Swede is wanted by Liverpool. Here are several issues to watch on the opening weekend: Big-spending Liverpool seek harmony Liverpool have changed their careful shopping habits and suddenly outspent their rivals, overhauling a squad fresh from winning the league. Only once since 2007, when Manchester City did it in 2019, have the Premier League champions been the biggest-spending English club in the market. A spree that has already seen Liverpool's US owners approve £260 million on Wirtz, Ekitike and defenders Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, is far from over with Isak and Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi linked with moves to Anfield. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez have been sold. The transition has shown teething problems in pre-season with a slick attack let down by a porous defence. Manager Arne Slot is confident his side are ready as they seek to retain the title for the first time since 1984. "I think we've lost five to six players that played quite a lot of minutes for us last season and we brought in four new ones, so then it's normal that there's a little bit of adaptation," said Slot. "But we are definitely ready for the league to start." Sesko and Gyokeres seek scoring start Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres are set to make their Premier League debuts for United and Arsenal respectively at Old Trafford after a summer that could have seen them line up the other way on Sunday. Arsenal were linked with a move to Sesko for over a year before deciding to bet on Gyokeres as the man to fire them to a first Premier League title since 2004 for a fee that could rise to £66 million. The Gunners have finished second for the past three seasons, lacking a clinical finisher to take that final step towards being champions Gyokeres netted a remarkable 97 times in 102 games in two years at Sporting Lisbon, much of which came under United's now-manager Ruben Amorim. Instead of being reunited with the Swede, Amorim has overhauled his attack with the signings of Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha at a combined cost of over £200 million. United, one of the world's richest clubs, had to spend big after their worst season since being relegated in 1974. In Amorim's first year in charge, the Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League and failed to qualify for Europe, losing the Europa League final. Both clubs desperately need a fast start and the battle between the two new number nines will go a long way to deciding the outcome. Villa and Newcastle chase 'big six' As the Premier League's traditional "big six" of Liverpool, Manchester City, United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham have flexed their financial muscle in the transfer market, Villa and Newcastle have been squeezed out. Constrained by the need to meet financial sustainability rules, Villa's only major signing has been Ivorian stiker Evann Guessand from Nice. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has had to field constant questions about Isak, who sat out pre-season preparations in a bid to force through a move to Liverpool. Despite having Saudi owners, the Magpies' attempts to replace the Swede have repeatedly fallen down, with most of their targets going elsewhere. But both Villa and Newcastle have consistently outperformed some of the "big six" in recent seasons and will be targeting Champions League qualification again this season. Blockbuster weekend as Premier League returns, Pirates tackle Sundowns, Boks face Wallabies and Dricus defends middleweight title & more!

This weekend promises to be pure sporting cinema! On the soccer pitch, we look forward to a blockbuster MTN8 semi-final... This weekend promises to be pure sporting cinema! On the soccer pitch, we look forward to a blockbuster MTN8 semi-final first leg between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, as well as the return of the Premier League. The Rugby Championship also kicks off on Saturday afternoon when the Springboks host the Wallabies before Argentina face the All Blacks in Córdoba. And of course, we'll get to see Dricus du Plessis attempt to defend his middleweight strap against Khamzat Chimaev. MTN8: Buccaneers under pressure ahead of Sundowns showdown A season that promised so much has already begun to unravel for Orlando Pirates as pressure mounts on new manager Abdeslam Ouaddou. A win in the first round of the MTN8 against Polokwane City was followed up by back-to-back defeats against Sekhukhune and Marumo Gallants. Sundowns, meanwhile, hit Richards Bay for four in their MTN8 quarter final. Their draw with Chippa on the opening weekend of the league came as a shock to many before normal service resumed on Wednesday evening with a 2-0 win over AmaZulu. Ouaddou has some decisions to make for this one. Leaving Rele Mofokeng on the bench against Gallants drew the ire of many Pirates supporters, with Jaisen Clifford's 92nd-minute winner for Marumo further exacerbating the issues. After a brilliant season under Jose Riveiro last time out, and with a ridiculous clutch of star signings in the transfer window, there will be little time for the Moroccan to get things right. There couldn't be a worse time to square off against Sundowns. Bet on all of the action across hundreds of live in-play or pre-match markets with Hollywoodbets. The Premier League returns Speaking of pressure, Ruben Amorim gets his first full Premier League campaign as Manchester United manager underway on Saturday. Coming in midway through last season, he was given a free hit even as results slid and the club's 42-point haul was only good enough for 15th place. He spent big in the window, bringing in Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Carlos Baleba also likely to arrive for a figure north of £100 million. He simply must push for top four at the very least. An opening weekend tie at the Theatre of Dreams against Arsenal is hardly ideal, with the Gunners winning on their last three visits to the ground. Elsewhere, Liverpool — who have also splashed the cash — are in action against Bournemouth on Friday evening. While Liverpool have strengthened, the Cherries have been shorn of their brightest stars. Dean Huijsen, Milos Kerkez and Illia Zabarnyi have all departed, along with Kepa Arrizabalaga's loan coming to an end. A tough evening awaits at Anfield. Manchester City travels to the Black Country to square off against Wolves. Pep Guardiola cut a stressed figure last season as the wheels came off over the festive period, and a strong start at Molineux is of paramount importance. Chelsea have also splashed the cash this summer and get their campaign underway at home against Crystal Palace. The Club World Cup winners have had significantly less rest than most of their rivals. It'll be interesting to see how they handle the opening weeks of the campaign after their escapades across the Pacific. No matter your team, Hollywoodbets brings you unmatched markets, live in-play action, and boosted odds to add even more thrill to the weekend. Rugby Championship: Title defence on the cards for Rassie and the Springboks? It's crazy to think that the Springboks have never successfully defended a Rugby Championship or Tri-Nations title. That's exactly what they'll be aiming to do over the next few months. They've also got the chance to become the first side to beat the All Blacks at Eden Park in 50 matches. But before all of that, they get their campaign underway against a Wallabies outfit who have just come off a bruising series defeat against the British & Irish Lions. The Boks, meanwhile, faced off against a weakened Italian side and Georgia, with some suggesting they're a bit undercooked coming into the Rugby Championship. Rassie Erasmus will know that the first two home Tests against Australia will set the tone for their campaign, and with just two years to go until the World Cup down under, time is running out to bed in new combinations. The curtain will come down on the weekend's TRC action in Córdoba when Argentina faces the All Blacks. Scott Robertson will miss some key personnel on the treatment table in the form of Tyrel Lomax, Cam Roigard, Luke Jacobson, Noah Hotham and Caleb Clarke. Los Pumas are a serious team but still blow frustratingly hot and cold. They beat the British & Irish Lions before back-to-back defeats against a second-string English side. They also opened last season's Rugby Championship with a 38-30 win against the All Blacks in Wellington before losing 42-10 at Eden Park a week later. They'll be targeting a fast start in front of their partisan support. Place your bets with Hollywoodbets on all of the action from first try-scorer and winning margins to live halftime markets it's all in play! Dricus du Plessis: Mzansi's warrior returns to the octagon UFC 319 at Chicago's United Center features a stacked card, with the main event seeing South Africa's first UFC champion, Dricus du Plessis, attempt to defend his middleweight strap against the unbeaten Khamzat Chimaev. There's no doubting the Chechen's ability; however, there are chinks in his armour as fights drag into the championship rounds. If he can't impose his ground game on the South African, there's every chance he could blow up heading into the fourth round, where Dricus' superior stamina will put him in a position to end the fight. We saw evidence of this when Chimaev dominated early proceedings against Gilbert Burns before his breathing became seriously laboured and his takedown attempts slowed significantly. Back the champ with Hollywoodbets' exclusive fight markets!
