Rajasthan CM discusses Firozpur Feeder Reconstruction Project with his Punjab counterpart
Jaipur, Jun 25 (PTI) Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday held a telephonic discussion on the Firozpur Feeder Reconstruction Project, a joint initiative critical for the canal irrigation system in northwest Rajasthan.
According to an official statement, the ₹ 647.62 crore project, aimed at strengthening the Gang Canal system that serves the districts of Sriganganagar and Hanumangarh in Rajasthan, was approved by the Central Water Commission (CWC) during its 158th advisory committee meeting on April 24.
Of the total project cost, Punjab will contribute ₹ 379.12 crore (58.54%) and Rajasthan ₹ 268.50 crore (41.46%).
Sharma confirmed that Punjab's Water Resources Department has given in-principle approval to Rajasthan's share of the funding, and the proposal will be forwarded to the central government after review by Rajasthan's finance department.
"The project will enhance the Firozpur Feeder's current capacity from 11,192 cusecs to 13,842 cusecs," said CM Sharma, adding that the increased capacity will help retain surplus monsoon water that would otherwise flow toward Pakistan, benefiting over 3.14 lakh hectares of irrigated land in Rajasthan.
The Rajasthan government aims to begin construction this year and complete the project by 2027, Sharma said, noting that ₹ 200 crore has already been provisioned in the state's 2024-25 budget for the initiative.
The project gained momentum following Sharma's visit to Sriganganagar in April, where local farmers and representatives raised the issue. Following the visit, Sharma held talks with the Union Jal Shakti Minister, leading to clearance by CWC.
Sharma said the reconstruction is expected to improve irrigation, increase crop productivity, and strengthen the region's agrarian economy.

Chhattisgarh govt launches toll-free helpline to report suspected illegal immigrants
RAIPUR: In a move to strengthen internal security and curb illegal immigration, Chhattisgarh govt has launched a 24x7 toll-free helpline number for citizens to report suspected illegal Bangladeshi immigrants residing in the state. Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma who also holds Home portfolio said that the helpline number 1800-233-1905 will be operated by police department and enable residents across the state to provide information regarding suspicious activities or identities of Bangladeshi nationals living unlawfully in their localities. Assurances have been made that the identity of informants will remain strictly confidential to encourage fearless cooperation in the national interest. Deputy CM Sharma said, 'The security of our country is our highest priority. The govt is firmly committed to keeping the state free from infiltrators and illegal activities. Until such elements are completely uprooted, the safety and peace of our citizens will remain at risk. This helpline offers the public a direct, safe, and effective channel to participate in protecting the nation.' He further added that the state government is rigorously investigating and identifying illegal Bangladeshi nationals based on information received and has instructed the police to treat every tip-off with utmost seriousness. Prompt and appropriate action will be taken on all reports. The police department has also been directed to conduct thorough verification of information to ensure that innocent individuals do not face any inconvenience. Besides, awareness campaigns will be launched to inform the public about the helpline and encourage active participation in this mission. Minister Sharma appealed to all citizens of Chhattisgarh, 'If you have any suspicion about the identity or activities of any person in your vicinity, please immediately contact the toll-free number. It is our collective responsibility to keep Chhattisgarh safe, peaceful, and strong.' Durg police recently have arrested two more Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in in Bhilai. A joint team of the Special Task Force (STF) and Cantonment Police Station detained the duo on June 3, following intelligence inputs about suspicious foreign nationals residing in the locality. Both accused had crossed the India-Bangladesh border illegally around 12 years ago and had been using fake Indian identity documents to stay in India, police had said.
