NEW DELHI: Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday took a vitriolic dig at party leader Shashi Tharoor, saying "for some, Modi is first".
When asked about Tharoor's recent article in The Hindu, where he called PM Modi "a prime asset for India on the global stage", Kharge said: "I can't read English, but his language is very good, that's why we made him a member of the party's working committee.
But what I want to say is that all of us, the entire opposition, have come together and said we stand with our Army, our Army that is fighting, we are with them."
"We say nation first, but some consider Modi first, country later. What can we do about that? " Kharge asked.
Responding to whether Congress was afraid of taking action against Tharoor, the leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha said the Thiruvananthapuram MP was speaking "according to his wishes".
"We are more worried about saving the nation," Kharge said, shrugging off the Tharoor question that was asked for the second time during the press brief.
However, Tharoor has scotched off the speculations that he may switch parties or join Congress's arch political rival, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Tharoor on Tuesday clarified that his recent article praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi's diplomatic efforts under
Operation Sindoor
should not be misconstrued as an indication of his "leaping to join" the BJP.

'It is not a sign of my leaping to join the Prime Minister's party (the BJP) as some people unfortunately have been implying,' Tharoor said when asked about the article during an event.
'It is a statement of national unity, of national interest and of standing up for India, which to my mind is fundamentally why I came back to India after 25 years of service at the UN. I did so to serve India, and I am very proud to have the opportunity to do so," Tharoor told news agency PTI.
In his article, Tharoor praised PM Narendra Modi's 'energy, dynamism and willingness to engage' as a key asset for India on the global stage, adding that it 'deserves greater backing.'
The Prime Minister's Office later shared the article on X, triggering speculation about Tharoor's growing distance from the Congress leadership.
The timing raised eyebrows, as the Congress has been sharply critical of the Modi government's foreign policy, accusing it of isolating India internationally.
'People always tend to see all this in the context of today's news,' Tharoor said after rumours began to gain ground.
'It is an article in which I describe the success of this outreach mission, which, amongst other things, showcased the unity of all parties behind the matter of vital national interest.'
He further said: 'So, I said the prime minister himself has demonstrated dynamism and energy in engaging with other countries. He has travelled to more countries than any prime minister, and done so in order to take the message of India around the world.'
Tharoor led a multi-party delegation to the United States and four other countries following the Pahalgam terror attack and subsequent military operation, aiming to convey India's position to the international community.

Minister reaffirms Congress commitment to ensuring social justice
Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister and Kalaburagi district in-charge Priyank Kharge has reaffirmed the Congress' commitment to delivering social and economic justice to the most marginalised in society. He was speaking at an event at the Poojya Basavarajappa Appa Memorial Hall where multiple civic initiatives were launched for the city's development and citizen welfare. At the event, the Minister symbolically distributed direct appointment orders to 935 civic workers, ending the contract labour system and making them permanent employees of the Kalaburagi City Corporation. Letters of appointment were also issued to newly recruited village administrative officers, while laptops were handed over to those concerned to assist them in digital governance at the village level — a first-of-its-kind initiative in the State. He also distributed sewing machines and motorised tricycles to persons with disabilities. 'This is a proud and happy moment. As promised, we are appointing you all directly as municipal employees. This has been made possible because of the Congress ideology and commitment,' Mr. Kharge said praising the civic workers for their crucial role in keeping the city clean despite many challenges. Mr. Kharge further announced that if a site is allotted by the City Corporation for housing, the State government will provide necessary funding for the construction of houses for civic workers and urged local MLAs and MPs to contribute funds for the purpose. 'A Kalaburagi city master plan has been prepared for the next 25 years in collaboration with the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS). This plan has been drafted after consulting various civic organisations and stakeholders. Although the Union government denied Kalaburagi Smart City status, the State government is working to transform it into a well-planned and inclusive urban space within the next three years. As part of this blueprint, 23 major traffic circles will be redeveloped, 31 public parks upgraded and four lakes restored,' Mr. Kharge said. Mr. Kharge also announced the establishment of Nagavi Institute of Competitive Exams (NICE)training centre at Vajpayee Layout. It is scheduled to open in the last week of July, initially offering free coaching to 500 aspirants preparing for IAS, KAS and other competitive exams, with plans to expand to 2,000 students in the future, he added. Taking aim at BJP leaders, Mr. Kharge said that they came to Kalaburagi just to criticise him, not to talk about development. 'Instead of engaging in constructive dialogue, they resort to personal attacks,' he claimed. MLC Tippannappa Kamakanur urged the Minister to allocate funds for the construction of housing for civic workers and also requested Lok Sabha member Radhakrishna Doddamani to raise the issue of including Kabbaliga community in the Scheduled Tribes list in Parliament. Kalaburagi Mayor Yallappa Naikodi, Mr. Doddamani, MLAs Allamprabhu Patil, Kaneez Fathima, KUDA chairman Mazhar Alam Khan, Deputy Commissioner Fauzia Tarannum, Zilla Panchayat CEO Bhanwar Singh Meena and Municipal Commissioner Avinash Shinde and others were present.

Memorial For Pahalgam Victims: J&K Administration To Build ‘Symbol Of Resilience' In 6 Months
A spot close to the Pahalgam ambush site has been identified, and the structure's design is being envisioned as one that captures solemnity & strength To honour those who lost their lives and to reassure tourists, the Jammu & Kashmir administration, in consultation with the Centre, has finalised plans to construct a memorial near the site of the Pahalgam terror attack. A group of five armed militants linked to Pakistan's Lashkar e Taiba opened fire on tourists, killing 26 civilians. Attackers reportedly asked victims their religious identity, demanding recitation of the Islamic kalima to distinguish non Muslims. The ambush was carried out in Kashmir's tourism belt — an area that has otherwise witnessed a surge in footfall post-Article 370 abrogation. The planned memorial, officials say, will be constructed within six months and will serve not just as a tribute, but also as a national symbol of resilience. The last time I was in Pahalgam I cycled through a market that was all but deserted. Today I came back to a Pahalgam that was bustling with activity. Tourists from various parts of the country competed for space with local picnickers who were enjoying the cool climate & rainy… — Omar Abdullah (@OmarAbdullah) June 22, 2025 A spot close to the ambush site has already been identified, and the structure's design — currently under finalisation — is being envisioned as one that captures both solemnity and strength. The incident triggered a swift response from security forces under Operation Sindoor, a coordinated anti-terror mission launched by India against Pakistan from May 7-11. The name 'Sindoor' was chosen symbolically, as many victims were newlyweds or families on pilgrimage. The precision military operation involved the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy. Nine terror installations tied to Lashkar e Taiba, Jaish e Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen—four in Pakistan, five in Pakistan occupied Kashmir — were attacked. Officials say the memorial will ensure that the memories of those innocent tourists, including women and children, are never forgotten, and that their loss stands as a reminder of the high cost of peace. The structure will be a place of reflection, not just for the families of the victims, but also for visitors and locals alike. It will also mark the spot where terror attempted to shake the spirit of Kashmir — but failed. Political storm erupts in Punjab after SAD leader Majithia's arrest: Opposition cries vendetta, AAP defends anti-drug drive
He further criticised the early morning raid at the MLA flat allotted to Majithia's wife and fellow legislator, Ganieve Kaur Majithia. 'No search warrant was brought, nor was she informed. The officials entered her bedroom and searched her almirahs. This is shameful and not the first time. Similar tactics were used against our party MLA Sukhpal Khaira. The Mann-led government's methods are immoral. Take action if needed, but follow due process,' he said. Bajwa also issued a caution to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, stating, 'Mann thinks he will rule Punjab for 25 years. But others who thought the same are now out of power. Follow the rule of law this is not jungle raj.' Congress MLA Sukhpal Khaira also came out in support of Majithia, condemning the raid as politically motivated. 'Punjab has now turned into a police state,' he said in a Facebook video. Punjab BJP spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal took to X to draw parallels with the Emergency, tweeting, '#EmergencyIndia1975 to till today in Punjab. Same things happening to shut the voices of opposition. Congress + AAP = INDI Alliance = One & the same! Political Vendetta!'
