After AI crash, Amreli protests training planes flying over homes

Time of India10 hours ago
Gandhinagar: Triggered by the recent Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, residents of Amreli, usually off the aviation radar, have launched an agitation to keep their skies clear.
While no commercial airline operates from this Saurashtra town, it frequently sees low-flying trainer aircraft. Two flying institutes operate from a small airstrip, and residents claim their aircraft fly low over houses, sometimes even at night. They have now threatened protests at the airport itself.
On Sunday, citizens staged a dharna in Amreli, saying they are not against the training institutes but want the flight paths changed.
"These planes fly over residential areas, which is not acceptable," said Suresh Shekhva, a member of the Amreli municipality. "We demand that their routes be altered. If our voices continue to be ignored, we will intensify the protest."
According to residents, their aircraft reportedly take off and circle above residential pockets throughout the day, and sometimes, at night. "In April this year, one of these planes crashed into a residential area, killing the pilot," said Ajay Agrawat, a resident.

Agrawat said residents had submitted memorandums to the Amreli collector and district authorities as far back as Dec 2023. "Even then, no measures were taken. The situation is alarming."
He added, "We are not demanding the closure of the academies, just ensure safety for the people living under their flight paths," he added.
The residents say that if their concerns are not addressed soon, they will protest directly at the airport itself. "We want to prevent another tragedy, not mourn it," said one protester.

REUTERS/Paul Hanna/File Photo A Japan Airlines flight plunged nearly 26,000 feet after a sudden cabin pressure failure on 30 June. Passengers from Shanghai to Tokyo grabbed oxygen masks as the plane dived, fearing they would lose consciousness or crash. Some wrote farewell notes mid-air. The pilot diverted the Boeing 737 to Osaka where it landed safely. No injuries were reported. The scare adds to recent global incidents involving Boeing aircraft, including an Air India mid-air drop and older deadly crashes linked to the 737 series. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Safe landing in Osaka Boeing's safety under scrutiny A Japan Airlines flight from Shanghai to Tokyo turned frightening when its Boeing 737 nosedived nearly 26,000 feet mid-air. On Monday, 30 June, flight JL8696, run by Japan Airlines' low-cost partner Spring Japan, left Shanghai Pudong Airport with 191 passengers and crew. Everything seemed routine until 6:53 PM local time.A sudden cabin pressure drop forced the aircraft down from 36,000 feet to just under 10,500 feet in ten minutes. Oxygen masks dropped from overhead panels. Passengers scrambled to put them on.A passenger told the Associated Press, 'I heard a muffled boom, and the next thing I knew, oxygen masks dropped from above. A flight attendant cried and shouted for everyone to wear their masks, saying there was a malfunction.' Another told the AP they woke up to the masks falling and felt on the 'verge of tears.'Footage from inside the cabin shows passengers holding their masks tight. Some clutched their seats. Others looked frozen in passenger revealed they wrote their will as the plane dropped. They jotted down insurance details and bank PINs. As reported by the South China Morning Post, one described the experience online: 'My body is still here, but my soul hasn't caught up. My legs are still shaking. When you face life or death, everything else feels trivial.'Another passenger wrote that the plane 'started plummeting violently at around 7 PM and dropped to 3,000 metres in just 20 minutes.'Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism later confirmed that the aircraft's pressurisation system triggered the emergency. The pilot declared an emergency, turned the plane towards Kansai International Airport in Osaka and landed safely at 8:50 injuries were reported. Passengers spent the night in hotels and received 15,000 yen each for transport. Japan Airlines has not yet given an official close call joins other troubling stories around Boeing's 737 line. Last year, a Jeju Air 737-800 crashed in South Korea, killing 179 people. In March 2022, a China Eastern Airlines 737 disaster killed all 132 on India, Air India faced its own scare this June. A Delhi-Vienna Boeing 777 dropped 900 feet mid-air on 14 June. Two days earlier, an Air India flight crashed in Ahmedabad just after take-off, leaving only one survivor. Air India told the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), 'Upon receipt of the pilot's report, the matter was disclosed to DGCA in accordance with regulations. Subsequently, upon receipt of data from the aircraft's recorders, further investigation was initiated. The pilots have been off-rostered pending the outcome of the investigation.'As investigators probe what failed on JL8696, passengers are left to process what nearly happened. For them, this was not just another was a flight where some whispered final words to loved ones. And a reminder that at 36,000 feet, safety can never be taken for granted.

Raksha Bandhan 2025: Check date and time, shubh muhurat, bhadra kaal for this year

Raksha Bandhan, a festival that celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters, will be observed on August 9 in 2025. According to the Vedic calendar, the festival is celebrated every year on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Sawan month. Sisters tie rakhi on their brothers' wrists and pray for their well-being, while brothers promise to protect them. The phrase "Raksha Bandhan" means a bond of protection. On this day, sisters tie a thread called rakhi on their brothers' wrists, wishing them a healthy and happy life. In return, brothers promise to protect their sisters and often give them gifts. In many places, the festival is not limited to family members. People also tie rakhis to close friends, neighbours, and even soldiers to show respect, friendship, and unity. Raksha Bandhan 2025 Date and Time As per the Vedic Panchang, the Purnima Tithi will begin on August 8 at 2:12 PM and will end on August 9 at 1:24 PM. It is important to perform them at the right time, especially during the Purnima Tithi and before the inauspicious period called Bhadra Kaal. Raksha Bandha 2025: Advisory on Bhadra Kaal As per Hindu scriptures, Rakhi tying during the Bhadra phase is discouraged. Religious texts like Vratraj suggest avoiding this period for any sacred activity. Good news for this year's festival Fortunately, for Raksha Bandhan 2025, the Bhadra Kaal ends early in the day. This allows families to carry out the celebrations comfortably during the recommended hours. Raksha Bandhan: Rituals On the day of Raksha Bandhan, it is customary to take a bath early in the morning and clean the home temple. Sprinkle Ganga water to purify the space. Place pictures of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi on a clean platform and offer prayers. Light a desi ghee lamp, chant mantras, and offer fruits, sweets, and other items as bhog. Seek blessings for peace and happiness in the family. After completing the puja, sisters apply a tilak on their brothers' foreheads and tie the rakhi. In return, brothers offer gifts and pledge to protect their sisters. Things to Keep in Mind on Raksha Bandhan Avoid arguments between siblings on this day. Do not think ill of others. Ensure cleanliness of both the house and prayer space. Avoid gifting anything in black color. Raksha Bandhan: Cultural roots and modern meaning The celebration is a traditional expression of love, care, and responsibility among siblings. Over time, it has come to represent not just family bonds but also social harmony and goodwill. Raksha Bandhan 2025: Historical and mythological background The festival's roots go back to old stories and legends. One tale tells how Queen Karnavati of Mewar sent a rakhi to Emperor Humayun, asking for his support and protection. The Mahabharata connection Another well-known story comes from the epic Mahabharata. Draupadi once tore a piece of cloth to bandage Lord Krishna's hand. In return, Krishna promised to stand by her in every difficult time.

Meet Zeus: The blind owl with the universe in his eyes

Owls are often called the epitome of wisdom in the animal kingdom, they are mysterious and majestic birds that have excellent night vision, sharp talons, and eerie, echoing calls. Most of these birds are solitary, shy hunters, gliding silently through forests or deserts after dark in search of prey. With their forward-facing eyes and rotating heads, owls have long been symbols of perfection and the wild unknown. But not all owls fit the mold of this classic nighttime predator. While most are elusive and wary of human contact, some rare individuals show us a softer, more personal side. One such extraordinary owl is Zeus, a blind Western screech owl who, instead of soaring through the night sky, now lives a calm and peaceful life beside a desk in Southern California. The owl with the universe in his eyes Zeus was discovered one morning on a front porch in Central California, injured and unable to fly. He had crashed into a house wall, and it quickly became clear something was wrong. According to Paul Hahn, founder of the Wildlife Learning Center in Sylmar, California, 'He was found emaciated and blind in front of someone's house in Central California'. After being brought to the Center, Zeus was examined by a veterinary ophthalmologist who diagnosed him with capsular cataracts, a condition that leaves his eyes flecked with white and shimmering patterns that look like stars. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo 'The white flecks that glisten in his eyes are caused by unique fibrin/blood pigment clots,' Hahn explained. 'These pigments cause a unique starry-eyed look, for which he is well known, hence the name Zeus', as per reports by the Bored Panda. He now lives in a protected centre Though he only has about 10% of his vision left and cannot survive in the wild, Zeus found a forever home at the Wildlife Learning Center. He now lives in a comfortable spot inside the center, perched in a hollowed trunk on top of Hahn's filing cabinet. 'Zeus exudes a very peaceful presence and is very calm. He has a very big personality and exhibits a bit of a curious nature,' Hahn said. Visitors are surprised when they see Zeus. 'Many other people see him but believe he is a stuffed animal because he is so calm and peaceful. When he wakes and opens his eyes, people gasp. We have had people almost in tears when he reveals his peepers,' said Hahn said to the Bored Panda. While he can no longer hunt like his wild cousins, Zeus plays another important role. 'It is really special that Zeus' disability is causing so many people to be aware and care for screech owls and our environment everywhere. He truly is an ambassador to his species,' Hahn shared. Zeus may not fly under the stars anymore, but with eyes like his, he carries the night sky with him.
