Bank manager, 2 others held for Rs 53cr robbery

Vijayapura: A bank manager and his two accomplices were arrested in connection with the theft of gold and cash valued at Rs 53.3 crore from Canara Bank's Managuli branch on May 25.
Vijayapura SP Lakshman Nimbaragi said here on Thursday that 58.9kg of gold valued at Rs 53.26 crore and cash to the tune of Rs 5.2 lakh was stolen from the locker of the bank in Basavanabagewadi taluk of Vijayapura district.
Police suspected the involvement of insiders and eight teams of police personnel were formed to nab the culprits. Police arrested Vijayakumar Miriyal, former manager of Managuli branch, Chandrashekhar Nerella of Hubballi and Sunil Moka, and recovered two cars and 10.5kg of gold valued at Rs 10.75 crore that was being transported in the car.
How they planned
Nimbargi said: "Nerella, who was dismissed from Syndicate Bank, is into real estate business in Hubballi. He plays in casinos in Goa and Sri Lanka. Moka is his associate."
Miriyal along with his friend Nerella and Moka hatched the plan in February this year to loot the bank. They were waiting for Miriyal to be transferred from Managuli branch so that the allegations will come on the new incumbent manager.
Miriyal was transferred to Ronihal branch in Vijayapura district on May 9 and the crime was committed on the intervening night of May 24 and 25, Nimbargi said.
He said Miriyal had handed over the keys of the bank's safe deposit lockers to his two associates and they had got duplicate keys made. The trio had recced the roads and CCTV cameras, and ensured that lights and cameras were dysfunctional on the night of May 24. The trio had kept black magic materials near the branch to give an impression that people from Kerala and Tamil Nadu were involved.
SP Nimbaragi said the probe carried out so far is 'Managuli Part I' and 'Managuli II' is awaited. "We have continued our probe to recover remaining stolen gold and cash and nab the others involved in this crime," he said.

The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Police is investigating how Jawed Rasul Shaikh, who has been driving around the MP and his MLA son Vilas Bhumre for 13 years, is linked to the estate of the erstwhile Diwan of Hyderabad, Salar Jung. Jawed told TOI that he was cooperating with the inquiry and had already submitted the details investigators had asked for. "I share good relations with the descendants of the Salar Jung family, so they gifted the land to me," he said. Police commissioner Pravin Pawar said Thursday that Jawed was summoned based on a complaint by a lawyer from Parbhani, flagging the "hibanama" (gift deed) in his name for what is regarded as "prime land" at Dawoodpura along Jalna Road in Sambhajinagar. "We will scan Jawed's income tax returns and details of any other source of income. Vilas, who represents Paithan constituency, protested against police allegedly dragging him and his father into the controversy over a land transfer deed in Jawed's name. "EOW officials questioned me, too. Although Jawed is our driver, we don't have control over everything he does. In any case, hibanama is a legally valid process of gifting assets," he said. Several members of the Salar Jung family served as prime ministers to the erstwhile Nizams of Hyderabad. The gift deed executed by Mazhar Ali and six others states that they received their share of three out of 12 acres belonging to the clan at Bagsherganj in Dawoodpura after a prolonged litigation lasting till Jan 30, 2023. Police have found out that the gift deed in favour of Jawed was executed around the same time. Lawyer Mujahid Khan, whose complaint led EOW to initiate the probe, said his curiosity was piqued by the fact that Jawed wasn't even remotely related to the Salar Jung clan. "Why would the descendants of Salar Jung from Hyderabad give a gift deed to a person working as a driver in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and that too after winning a legal battle for the same property. Also, a hibanama is legally valid only between blood relatives. The Salar Jung descendants and the driver are not only unrelated, they belong to two different sects of Islam." Repeated calls to numbers belonging to members of the Salar Jung family went unanswered.

Irular family of 10 rescued from bonded labour in Tamil Nadu's Vikravandi
VILLUPURAM: An Irular tribal family of 10, including four children, was rescued from bonded labour at a private brick kiln in Kalingamalai village near Vikravandi on Tuesday evening. Following the rescue, Villupuram Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) Murugesan issued Release Certificates and disbursed financial assistance of Rs 30,000 to each member of the family on Wednesday. According to sources, the National Adivasi Solidarity Council (NASC) had alerted senior officials earlier this week after receiving information about the family's plight. A field-level verification by the council confirmed the presence of bonded labourers at the site. Acting swiftly, the matter was escalated to the Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Justice Jaichandran. Subsequently, a coordinated team comprising the RDO, District Labour Welfare Officer, Vikravandi Tahsildar, and personnel from Kandamangalam police station conducted a late-night operation on Tuesday to rescue the family. The team also lodged a complaint with the police against the kiln owner, identified as K Palani. Official sources said the family had borrowed Rs 50,000 from the kiln owner two years ago and had continued working at the kiln despite having repaid the amount through labour. The owner allegedly forced them to remain in bondage, claiming compounded interest had pushed the debt to Rs 1 lakh. Speaking to TNIE, NASC Secretary K Krishnan said, 'We received a tip-off from a source, and it was heartening to witness the swift convergence of various government departments — including the judiciary, revenue, and police — working together to secure the family's release within 24 hours. This shows that if the system truly works for the marginalised, it can bring light into many lives.' The rescued family has since been sent back to their native village in Cuddalore. However, the kiln owner is yet to be remanded, officials said.

Anticipatory bail granted for actor Krishnakumar, daughter
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: BJP leader and actor Krishnakumar and his daughter Diya Krishna were granted anticipatory bail by Thiruvananthapuram principal sessions court in connection with a case for abduction that was filed by three former employees of a shop owned by Diya. The complaint of abduction was filed by Vinitha, Divya and Radhakumari, who were former employees of 'Oh by Ozy', a store owned by Diya. The police had filed a report with the court which said they could not find any evidence to substantiate the allegation of abduction. The CCTV visuals reportedly show the women leaving Diya's flat in two separate cars, weakening their claim. Meanwhile, the court turned down the anticipatory bail plea of the three women staff in the case pertaining to alleged financial fraud. Diya had complained that the women swindled Rs 69 lakh from the shop using their QR code instead of the one provided by the owners. The police informed the court that the investigation is yet to be completed and if anticipatory bail plea was granted, it would affect further investigation.
