Police corporal slashed with machete by mentally unstable man in Felda Bukit Kuantan
Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the incident left Cpl Mohd Shafril Izzwan Ismail, 37, from the Panching police station, with injuries to his back, chin and left fingers.
The attack happened around 5.30 pm when a police team rushed to the scene following reports of a man running amok with a machete inside the house.
'While attempting to calm the situation, Mohd Shafril was attacked by the suspect with the weapon. He was taken to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital and is now being treated in the Yellow Zone,' Yahaya said in a statement today.
Police later arrested the 37-year-old unemployed suspect, who is believed to have mental health issues, and seized several sharp weapons from the scene.
'The suspect has been referred to the psychiatric ward for mental health evaluation,' Yahaya added.
He has no prior criminal record. The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt with a weapon. — Bernama

Patiala House Court on Tuesday reserved the order on this issue after receiving replies from the NIA and Jail authorities. On August 1, the court disposed of an application of Rana seeking a regular telephone facility for his family in view of the denial of the facility by the jail authorities. Earlier, he was permitted to make a single call to his family. Rana is in judicial custody after NIA interrogation in the 26/11 Mumbai Terror Attack case. He was extradited from the USA in April this year. Earlier, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on July 9 filed a supplementary charge sheet against Tahawur Rana in the 26/11 Mumbai terror case. The court had extended the judicial custody of Rana till August 13. This supplementary charge sheet contains procedural documents like arrest memo, seizure memo and other documents, Rana's counsel Piyush Sachdev had told ANI. The main charge sheet was filed by the NIA in December 2011. On June 9, the Court had granted Tahawwur Rana permission to make a single phone call to his family for the time being. The call was strictly conducted in accordance with jail regulations and under the supervision of a senior official from the Tihar jail authorities. Recently, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) collected voice and handwriting samples from Rana, who was extradited from the United States. The NIA had previously informed the court that Rana was confronted with substantial evidence related to the 26/11 attacks. The agency argued for further custody, citing his evasive behaviour during questioning and lack of cooperation. Senior Advocate Dayan Krishnan and Special Public Prosecutor Narender Mann represented the NIA in the proceedings, while Advocate Piyush Sachdeva defended Rana. 64-year-old Canadian businessman of Pakistani origin, Rana, was extradited recently in connection with his alleged involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Eda Ezrin back in Malaysia, detained with one other, say Bukit Aman
PASIR MAS: Two out of six Malaysians previously detained by Thai authorities over drug-related offences, including dikir barat singer Eda Ezrin, returned to Malaysia on Thursday (Aug 7) evening. Eda Ezrin, whose real name is Wan Norshaheeda Azlin Wan, and Nur Aida Mamat, 33, are currently under the custody of the Kelantan Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID). Bukit Aman NCID director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the remaining four individuals are still in Thailand, pending passport activation before they can be repatriated. "All six are assisting Thai authorities with further investigations," he told Bernama. The four still held in Thailand have been identified as Eridieka Mohd Noor, 33; Zuhaira Nasrin; Eda Ezrin's husband, Mohd Affendi Ahmad, 35; and Mohamad Alif Deraman, 33. Meanwhile, Eda Ezrin's father, Wan Ismail Wan Yusuf, 52, expressed relief and gratitude following her return to Malaysia, when he was met outside the Rantau Panjang police station on Thursday night. Earlier on Thursday, Bernama observed family members gathered at the police station as Eda Ezrin was being questioned by narcotics investigators. She and five other Malaysians, including her husband, were released by the Narathiwat Prison Court about 11 am (local time) after Thai prosecutors failed to present witnesses or evidence to support an appeal. The group had been detained since Nov 1 last year after being accused of possessing 6,059 Yaba pills. On Wednesday (Aug 6), the court dismissed the prosecution's sixth attempt to extend the appeal deadline. PETALING JAYA : A key prosecution witness in former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng's corruption trial will apply for official protection under the witness protection programme after he was attacked by 10 men yesterday. G Gnanaraja's lawyer RT Rajasekaran said a formal letter would be submitted to the police requesting protection pending a full investigation into the incident, Bernama reported. Rajasekaran said he was concerned that the assault might be linked to his client's role as a key prosecution witness in the ongoing corruption trial. 'We trust the police will conduct their investigation professionally, and we urge the public to refrain from speculation or drawing premature conclusions until the probe is completed,' he was quoted as saying. Yesterday, the New Straits Times reported that Gnanaraja suffered injuries to his face and hand after being attacked by 10 men at his home. The assailants were said to have tied up two security guards before entering his house. Separately, Gnanaraja appealed to the police for protection for his family, citing threats made during the 6.30am attack, which saw a group of masked individuals armed with machetes break into his home. 'One of them swung a machete towards my mouth and hand, while warning me not to speak out or 'play the hero'. They also fled with several personal belongings,' he said. Gnanaraja later sought treatment at a private hospital, and required five stitches to his left hand. Gnanaraja's wife, G Geethanjali, said she and her family are now living in fear following the incident and appealed for police protection. When asked about items that had been reported as missing, Geethanjali declined to comment, citing the ongoing police investigation. She also confirmed that she had just completed giving her statement to the authorities. 'A lot happened yesterday, but I'm unable to disclose details at this stage as it may interfere with the investigation,' she told reporters during a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur court complex today. Earlier today, Lim's lawyers criticised recent media reports and prosecutorial remarks that allegedly linked the DAP adviser to the assault on the witness. In a statement, law firm Haijan Omar & Co, acting on behalf of the Bagan MP, condemned what they described as 'premature and misleading' speculation surrounding the incident. They also urged the media to refrain from reporting unverified claims about the assault, warning that such reports risk undermining the judicial process and Lim's presumption of innocence.
