Diontae Johnson Addresses Controversial Tenure With Ravens Before 2025 NFL Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Cleveland Browns wide receiver Diontae Johnson will play for his third AFC North team in the 2025 NFL season. After spending the first five seasons of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Johnson shared the 2024 season between the Carolina Panthers, Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans.

It was with the Ravens that one of his biggest controversies to date happened. The 28-year-old wide receiver refused to enter last season's Week 13 duel against the eventual Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles.
Fans at M&T Bank Stadium on Dec. 1, where the temperature was 41 degrees at kickoff, saw Johnson refusing to enter the game after Rashod Bateman exited with an injury. Johnson declined, which resulted in a one-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team and his subsequent waiving.

During an appearance on the "Sports & Suits" podcast (via the Ravens' official site), Johnson opened up on his infamous situation. He blamed the temperature for his decision, which could have hurt his performance.

"It was cold," Johnson said. "So, I'm on the sideline, just standing there, just going to the heater, back and forth, just waiting to hear my name called. So, end of third [quarter], going into the fourth over there, they're like, 'Tae, we need you.' I'm like, 'Nah.' To me, I'm thinking, 'I don't think it's a good idea for me,' because I was thinking about, like, my legs. I don't want to go out there and put bad stuff on film.
"And it's not like I didn't want to go in the game. But you've got to think, like, leading up to this point, I'd been through so much. ... I'd checked out mentally. I was like, 'Whatever happens, happens.' I was just rolling with the punches at that time. So, I told them I wasn't going in. I was like, 'I understand what you're saying, but I'm not going to go in.' So, I just sat on the bench, and that's when they suspended me."
Johnson played four games with the Ravens, recording one reception on five targets for six yards and no touchdowns.
Johnson was waived and then signed with the Texans. He played one game for them, catching two passes for 12 yards and no touchdowns. He's now set to start a new era with the Browns, but the memory of that December game is still fresh.

49ers Urged to Pull Off Blockbuster WR Trade to Give Brock Purdy New Weapon
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. After three straight NFC Championship Game appearances and two Super Bowl appearances in the last five years, few saw the hard fall from grace coming for the San Francisco 49ers in 2024. But with injuries to top stars like running backs Christian McCaffrey and Elijah Mitchell, wide receivers Brandon Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings, offensive tackle Trent Williams, defensive end Nick Bosa, linebacker Dre Greenlaw, cornerback Charvarius Ward, and safety Talanoa Hufanga, San Francisco just couldn't stay healthy enough to put forth a fight in most games. But after some retooling, and locking up quarterback Brock Purdy to a monster five-year, $265 million contract extension, many are back on the 49ers bandwagon in believing the team is back to Super Bowl contender status. Among that group of believers is veteran Bay Area sports reporter Larry Krueger, who believes San Francisco is just three moves away from winning its first Lombardi Trophy since 1994. In a post on X, Kruger laid out the moves he thinks the 49ers need to execute before the season begins, and his most head-turning suggestion involves jettisoning All-Pro wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. "Trade Brandon Aiyuk to the Commanders for Terry McLaurin," Krueger wrote. "Win-win trade. Daniels gets his guy Aiyuk, who's the younger, and potentially better receiver. SF gets a healthy receiver now." After signing his four-year, $120 million extension last season, things couldn't have gone worse for Aiyuk. He was barely noticeable in the seven games he played before tearing his ACL and missing the rest of the season. Brandon Aiyuk #11 of the San Francisco 49ers catches a pass during an NFL football game against the Dallas Cowboys at Levi's Stadium on October 8, 2023 in Santa Clara, California. Brandon Aiyuk #11 of the San Francisco 49ers catches a pass during an NFL football game against the Dallas Cowboys at Levi's Stadium on October 8, 2023 in Santa Clara, 27-year-old hasn't been shy about his desire to play with former Arizona State teammate and current Commanders QB Jayden Daniels, and adding McLaurin would be a big get for the 49ers offense. Though he's two years older, McLaurin isn't coming off a major injury, and he's put up five straight 1,000-yard seasons and he logged a career-high 13 touchdowns last year. The Ohio State alum could also be a perfect mentor to 2024 first-rounder Ricky Pearsall. Kruger also makes a case that the 49ers can shore up their secondary by sending a sixth-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for disgruntled Pro Bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who Miami is actively trying to trade, though it would likely take more than a sixth-rounder to pique the Dolphins' interest. More NFL: Brandon Aiyuk Sends Clear Message to 49ers Amid Trade Rumors "The Future HOF(er) can play outside and SF can return Lenoir to his best spot, slot CB and give rookie CB Upton Stout time to adjust to the NFL," Krueger continued. "Ramsey could also help inside at safety." Krueger also boldly urged the 49ers to deal defensive end Robert Beal, a 2025 second-round pick, plus a conditional 2027 fourth-rounder to the Cincinnati Bengals for pass-rusher Shemar Stewart. The 17th overall pick in April's draft, Stewart remains unsigned because he and the Bengals are at an impasse with his contract. Adding a young player like Stewart on a rookie contract would give the 49ers two stud first-round pass-rushers to help take some of the attention off Bosa. "Stewart and Mykel Williams could be SF next dynamic DL duo," Krueger added. "Bengals are going to get fleeced for Stewart. #49ers might as well do the fleecing. Cincy has until Aug 5th to get him signed or traded. Stay tuned." For more San Francisco 49ers and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

Shedeur Sanders Gets Roasted by Brother After Second Speeding Ticket
Shedeur Sanders Gets Roasted by Brother After Second Speeding Ticket originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Sanders brothers might be the most underrated duo in this year's NFL rookie class. Both of Coach Prime's sons are vying for roster spots for their respective teams, but Shedeur hasn't been out of the spotlight since the NFL Draft slide. Meanwhile, Shilo is forging his own path in the league. Advertisement Shedeur has gone from being a Colorado legend to making noise on and off the field in Cleveland. He was recently clocked going 101 MPH and reportedly received his second speeding ticket as a member of the Browns. This caught the attention of Shilo, but as CEO of the Headache Gang, he picked the best time to take a jab at his brother. During his latest video, Shilo was crossing the street in downtown Tampa with caution and said, 'We gotta be careful crossing the street, especially if Shedeur is out here.' One of Shilo's best qualities has always been his humor. From the best impression of Coach Prime to the classic back-and-forth banter with Shedeur, he definitely could make a second career in comedy. Advertisement Many remember the Sanders brothers in Paris for the Louis Vuitton Fashion Show two years ago with Shedeur and the 'Trash Bag' puffy coat incident. He had on a Marni black coat during the day of the walk through for the show and matched that with a white handbag, which made quite the statement. "Shedeur, that is cute," Shilo said at the time. "That bag is cute. You're tripping." He went on to tell his brother, "I could swing on you right now and it's not going to hurt," Shilo said. "You're doing too much." The former Colorado defensive back then made a call to Deion for his opinion. That opened up the floor for Shedeur to get roasted even further. As for Shedeur, speeding tickets are a reminder that life comes at you fast and it's time to slow down. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 23, 2025, where it first appeared.

Fresh Intel Reveals Deion Sanders Missed 'Official Duties' as Health Improves, Per Report
Fresh Intel Reveals Deion Sanders Missed 'Official Duties' as Health Improves, Per Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Deion Sanders Is Off the Sidelines for Now and Buffaloes Fans Are Watching Closely It's the heart of summer, and Colorado football's biggest star isn't on the recruiting trail, in the film room, or at the team's youth camps. Instead, Coach Prime is quietly recovering away from Boulder, leaving fans wondering just how close he is to returning. Advertisement In a video posted Saturday by his son, Deion Sanders Jr., the legendary coach was seen fishing in Texas with Colorado standout Travis Hunter. While encouraging Hunter to reel in a fish, Sanders appeared upbeat but far from full throttle. 'It's a beautiful thing,' Sanders Jr. said. 'Coach Prime back active, moving around. God is great. Not back active moving around, but it's progress.' Yet even that bit of movement comes amid mounting concern. According to USA Today's Brent Schrotenboer, Sanders has been away from his coaching duties since April and missed Colorado's annual youth and high school football camps in June, events clearly outlined in his employment contract. His absence has fueled speculation and stirred unease among fans and insiders alike. Contractual Duties Unfulfilled Coach Prime's contract requires him to run summer football camps, key events that develop local talent and keep the program front-of-mind for young athletes across Colorado. His no-show in June didn't go unnoticed. Advertisement Brent Schrotenboer reported that Sanders 'did not attend Colorado's annual youth and high school camps,' even though organizing and appearing at them is officially listed in his job description. Health Still a Major Hurdle Sanders, 57, has long battled serious health issues, most notably blood clots in his legs. The complications led to the amputation of two toes and over 10 surgeries. He previously missed the 2023 Pac-12 media event due to these challenges. This time, Sanders admitted on a podcast with Asante Samuel that his current condition is 'at a whole nother level.' He revealed he's lost about 14 pounds during this recent health scare. Advertisement Despite an optimistic tone in a June 11 post, 'everything is OKAY', his timeline for a full return remains a mystery. Coach Prime, Deion SandersCU Buffs A Team Waiting for Its Leader While this is considered a quieter time in the college football calendar, Sanders is expected to headline Colorado's presence at the Big 12 media days on July 9 in Frisco, Texas. Whether he appears is still uncertain. His absence has created a leadership vacuum, albeit temporary in a program that has seen seismic growth under his watch. He's helped land a top-20 transfer class and significantly boosted the salaries of his assistants. Still, as the spotlight dims slightly in his absence, the Buffaloes faithful are left wondering: Can the magic of Coach Prime continue if he's only half present? Advertisement Fans should brace for a cautious timeline. Colorado athletic director Rick George has supported Sanders through his health battles, and with good reason. Without Prime, Colorado's national relevance would drop off a cliff. But support comes with accountability. As fall camp looms, all eyes will be on whether Sanders shows up, not just in body, but in full command. Because when Coach Prime speaks, the nation listens. And right now, Boulder is waiting.
