There will be no harasment or bribery this time. To ensure transparency, the department will use its own vehicles and traffic police personnel for towing operations. No new guidelines are required
– B Dayananda, Police Commissioner
The announcement of towing resuming in Bengaluru to decongest traffic has sparked sharp criticism and mixed reactions from citizens, with many raising concerns over past misuse, corruption, and harassment. While the civic body insists the move is aimed at curbing illegal parking and improving traffic flow, Bengaluru residents worry it could revive what they describe as a 'towing mafia.'The towing system, previously discontinued following widespread complaints in 2022, is now set to make a comeback. Instead of outsourcing the task to third-party tow contractors, the towing will be carried out by police vehicles and personnel, Home Minister G Parameshwara stated in a recent meeting. He explained that 19 places across the city face severe problems during rains, including eight that experience high levels of traffic congestion.Officials insist that the reinstated towing system is purely aimed at easing traffic congestion caused by wrongful parking. 'There will be no harassment or bribery this time.To ensure transparency, the department will use its own vehicles and traffic police personnel for towing operations. No new guidelines are required, and only parking fines will be levied,' said City Police Commissioner B Dayananda. However, the assurance hasn't convinced everyone.'Bringing back towing is like opening the gates for bribery again. Last time, they towed cars even from legal parking zones and demanded cash on the spot,' said a resident of Koramangala. 'It's not about discipline anymore, it becomes a business.'Several Bengalureans took to social media to express their displeasure, calling it a step backwards. In X (formerly Twitter), Bhaskar Rao, former IPS and Commissioner of police, Bengaluru, posted, 'Bengaluru city has no parking policy, no footpath pedestrians policy and no street vendors and Hawking Policy. By bringing back the towing mafia, fear, threat, bribery, and harassment will also return. Poor street design and mismanaged urban planning are taking a toll on ordinary, law-abiding citizens, now left at the mercy of aggressive towing squads. @CMofKarnataka should intervene to prevent harassment of citizens.'Is this the #BrandBengaluru we aspire to?' asked Citizen Matters, a civic-focused organisation. 'Instead of unleashing the towing mafia, the Chief Minister must focus on real reforms: publish and implement a comprehensive, participatory Urban Mobility and Public Space Policy; decriminalise survival by legalising and regulating street vending; and adopt a 'build first, enforce later' approach by creating infrastructure before penalising its absence. Law-abiding citizens should not be terrorised for the government's shortcomings. Fix the system—don't scapegoat the people.'Meanwhile, another user stated, 'Now we're supporting the worst kind of people? Those who illegally park vehicles on roads! I have driven cars for 15 years now in Bengaluru, and never have any of them been towed. Not even a ticket. I welcome the Police instilling the fear of towing on these lawbreakers.'Urban mobility experts agree that illegal parking is a serious concern that must be addressed. 'Urban towing is necessary to manage city traffic, but its success depends on a transparent process, well-defined policies, appropriate fines, and strict enforcement in no-tolerance zones such as traffic junctions, bus stops, and metro stations,' said Vinod Jacob of. 'However, a major part of the problem stems from private tour operators and yellow cabs. There needs to be a targeted solution to address their parking challenges.'However, over 2.19 lakh wrong parking cases have been reported till April this year, underscoring the severity of the city's traffic congestion issues. Authorities claim the revived towing system is a necessary step to address this. While some hope the revised system will bring order to chaotic roads, many fear it could lead to renewed harassment, bribery, and inconvenience unless strict oversight is ensured.

Last Updated: Ashely Biden captioned the post with a message: 'Too grateful to be angry about all the bulls**t." Ashley Biden, daughter of former US President Joe Biden, hit back at recent reports about her father's mental and physical health, calling the claims 'DAMN disrespectful and untrue." She captioned the post with a message: 'Too grateful to be angry about all the bulls**t," adding, 'This family's only coverup is a beach coverup." Ashley Biden's comments come amid speculation about the former president's health, particularly in the wake of books such as Original Sin. Rejecting the claims, Ashley Biden wrote, 'He aged, YES! As we all do! And the stress of the presidency accelerates. But he was always MORE than capable of doing the job. And a damn good one." Ashley Biden took aim at what she called 'recent noise from fake news" accusing some in the media of pushing false narratives for profit. She wrote, 'The noise is so DAMN disrespectful and untrue… created by those committed to perpetuating and profiting from some real BS. Get lost with your fake news and anonymous sources." Ashley also thanked the public for the outpouring of support following her father's recent prostate cancer diagnosis. Her comments follow a similar rebuke from Joe Biden's granddaughter Naomi Biden, who criticized Original Sin in a post on X (formerly Twitter), calling the book 'political fairy smut" written by 'irresponsible self-promoting journalists." Dutch government falls as far-right leader Wilders quits coalition

Far-right Dutch leader Geert Wilders withdrew his party from the government on Tuesday (June 3, 2025) in a row over immigration, bringing down a shaky coalition and likely ushering in elections. Mr. Wilders has been frustrated with what he saw as the slow pace of introducing the "strictest-ever immigration policy", agreed with coalition partners after his shock election win in November 2023. "No signature for our asylum plans... PVV leaves the coalition," Mr. Wilders said on X, formerly Twitter, referring to his far-right Freedom Party. The withdrawal opens up a period of political uncertainty in the European Union's fifth-largest economy and major exporter, as far-right parties make gains across the continent. The latest government crisis also comes just weeks before the Netherlands is due to host world leaders for a NATO summit. Last-ditch crisis talks on Tuesday morning lasted barely half an hour before the leaders of the four coalition parties came out in a testy mood. "I have just informed the prime minister that I will withdraw the PVV ministers from the cabinet and that we can no longer bear responsibility for this," Mr. Wilders said. "I signed up for the strictest asylum policy, not for the downfall of the Netherlands and that our responsibility for this cabinet therefore ends at this moment," he added. Eighteen months after his surprise election win sent shockwaves through Europe, polls suggest his PVV is still the strongest party. However, the gap to his nearest rivals has narrowed, with the left-wing Green/Left party of former European Commission vice-president Frans Timmermans following close behind. The liberal VVD party, a traditional powerhouse in Dutch politics, are also running near the top two, meaning any election would likely be closely fought. VVD leader Dilan Yesilgoz, visibly angry, described Wilders's move as "super irresponsible", adding she was afraid it would open the door to left-wing parties. "How can you do this to the Netherlands?" she said. Any elections would likely be held after the summer break, Sarah de Lange, professor of political pluralism at the University of Amsterdam, told AFP. "New elections are likely, but in the Netherlands, organising them takes almost three months. Snap elections in the Netherlands are not as quick as in other countries," she said. 'Patience has run out' In late May, Mr. Wilders called an impromptu press conference to announce his "patience has now run out" with the government of Prime Minister Dick Schoof. He threatened to torpedo the coalition if a new 10-point plan to crimp immigration was not implemented within a few weeks. His plan included border closures for asylum seekers, tougher border controls and deporting dual nationals convicted of a crime. Political and legal experts criticised the plans as unworkable or illegal, with some suggesting Wilders was creating a crisis to collapse the government. The far-right leader has often been called the "Dutch Trump" for his anti-immigrant views -- and instantly recognisable bouffant hairstyle. His ambitions to lead his country were frustrated after his election win, as his coalition partners blocked his premiership bid, settling instead on Schoof as a compromise candidate. The leaders of the four coalition partners agreed not to take up cabinet positions, instead running their parties as parliamentary chiefs. Wilders has been an uncompromising figure in parliament, his quick-witted jousting with Timmermans being a highlight of debates. He has frequently said that the only way to implement his anti-immigrant policies is for him to become prime minister. However, in the fractured Dutch political system, no party can win an absolute majority in the 150-seat parliament and Wilders will need partners. He can count on the support of the BBB farmers' party. The backing of the VVD -- currently an uneasy coalition partner -- is less certain. The fourth party in the current coalition -- the anti-corruption New Social Contract -- has seen support collapse since charismatic leader Pieter Omtzigt stepped down. Far-right parties have been on the rise across Europe. In May, the far-right Chega ("Enough") party took second place in Portuguese elections. In Germany, the anti-immigration far-right AfD doubled its score in legislative elections in February, reaching 20.8 percent. And in Britain, polls show the anti-immigration, hard-right Reform UK party of Nigel Farage is making significant gains following a breakthrough in local elections.
