2 more die of diarrhoea in Odisha's Jajpur, central team reaches district to assess situation
With this, seven people have died in the outbreak, which was first reported on June 9, Additional District Medical Officer Prakash Chandra Bal said.
Over 1,500 people were diagnosed with diarrhoea in the district, and 1,300 of them have recovered, officials said.
"The situation is yet to be brought under control. When no new patients are admitted to the hospital, we will be able to control it," Director of Public Health Nilakantha Mishra said.
Adding to the worries, 11 diarrhoea patients were found positive for cholera, Chief District Medical Officer Bijay Mishra said.
Samples of 21 of the around 200 people at present undergoing treatment were sent for cholera testing, he said.
A 14-member central team has reached the district to assess the ground situation, Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling said.
He visited various hospitals in the district during the day and interacted with patients and doctors.
"It is a matter of concern for us that cholera has been detected in Jajpur. A team from SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack has been deployed in the district. We are trying to bring the situation under control," he told reporters.
Rural Water Supply and Sanitation teams are disinfecting drinking water sources in the district, while food inspectors and disease surveillance teams are also working to bring the situation under control, officials said.
ASHA and Anganwadi workers, and health workers have been supplied with halogen tablets and ORS packets for distribution among the people, they said.
People have been advised to take all precautionary measures, avoid having outside foods, and adhere to hygienic practices, they said.
Diarrhoea cases have also been detected in parts of the Cuttack district and the Astaranga area in Puri district, officials said.
Over 30 people were diagnosed with diarrhoea in Gholapur village in Cuttack, and 20 people were affected in Puri's Astaranga, they said.
Medical teams have been sent to those areas to tackle the situation, they added.

Diarrhoea claims 3 lives in Amritsar village
Amritsar: Three people died and around 18 to 24 others were hospitalised due to a suspected diarrhoea outbreak in the last few days in Khankot Sardara village in ward number 35 of Amritsar. Civil surgeon Dr Kirandeep Kaur, who visited the village on Monday, told mediapersons that two of the deaths were caused by acute diarrhoea and vomiting, while the third person had underlying liver issues. One of the victims was a woman. The civil surgeon said they have begun collecting water samples for testing. "While the tests typically take five days, we are expediting the process and hope to receive results within two days," she said. "Residents have complained of a foul smell in the water. We've called in the sanitation department and instructed immediate chlorination of water tanks," she added. The civil surgeon said that her team distributed oral rehydration salts (ORS) and zinc tablets to affected residents and advised anyone experiencing symptoms of diarrhoea or loose motion to begin ORS treatment immediately. HC directs dept to form new inspection team to tackle absenteeism, vacancies at SCB
1 2 Cuttack: Orissa high court has directed the health and family welfare department to take concrete and time-bound measures to tackle absenteeism, staff vacancies and ensure accountability among medical personnel in SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack. Taking note of persistent complaints that several doctors are skipping hospital duties to attend private clinics, a division bench comprising Justices S K Sahoo and V Narasingh on Thursday asked the department to form a new inspection team. "This team, which will include officials not below the rank of deputy secretary, is tasked with conducting surprise checks and submitting sealed reports periodically to the court," the bench specified in the order after taking note of an affidavit filed by Dr Goutam Kumar Satpathy, superintendent of SCB. The court has scheduled the next hearing for Sept 18, when a further compliance report is expected to be submitted. Appearing in virtual mode, Satpathy informed the court about the steps being taken to instil discipline and improve staff attendance. According to the affidavit dated Aug 12, the hospital has implemented the Aadhaar-enabled biometric attendance system to track the entry and exit of doctors and staff. The affidavit also cited a standard operating procedure (SOP) issued on Oct 5, 2015, which recommends the formation of an internal vigilance committee to monitor conduct across departments including OPDs, surgical wards, casualty units and diagnostic centres. Following the SOP, the hospital authorities have constituted three dedicated teams to carry out surprise inspections at least twice a week across OPDs, IPDs, ICUs and OTs. These teams report their findings directly to the medical superintendent for further action. The affidavit also highlighted staff shortage at SCB, revealing that 87 faculty posts are vacant. They comprised 15 professors, 33 associate professors, 16 assistant professors, and 23 senior residents or tutors. As per hospital norms, OPD doctors are expected to maintain duty hours from 9am to 5pm, with a one-hour lunch break. Emergency and inpatient services continue round-the-clock, including on public holidays. The regional diagnostic centre also functions 24x7 under the supervision of pathology, biochemistry and radiology departments, the affidavit stated.
