Yinson's Q1 earnings drop 43pct to RM115mil, revenue down to RM1.23bil

KUALA LUMPUR: Yinson Holdings Bhd's net profit for the first quarter ended April 30, 2025 (1QFY26) fell 43 per cent to RM115 million from RM203 million in the same period last year.
This was primarily due to the reclassification of FPSO Anna Nery as a joint venture following its disposal and higher administrative expenses.
Its revenue dropped 44 per cent to RM1.23 billion from RM2.21 billion in the same quarter last year, mainly due to reduced contributions from engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning (EPCIC) activities.
The performance was also due to FPSO Maria Quitéria and FPSO Atlanta having already achieved first oil on Oct 15 and Dec 31, 2024 respectively, while the Agogo FPSO remains in its final construction phase.
Yinson said the ongoing progress of its projects under construction remains on track and aligned with the group's expectations.
The company declared an interim single-tier dividend of 2.0 sen per share for the financial year 2026, amounting to approximately RM56 million, with the entitlement and payment dates set for Sept 4 and Sept 26 respectively.
In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, Yinson said demand in the FPSO market remains strong, particularly for contractors like itself that offer emissions reduction technologies and have a proven track record in timely delivery, safety, and operational excellence.
"The demand for FPSOs is positive with the increase in project sanctions around the world particularly from Brazil, being the highest FPSO demand centre, followed by West Africa," it said.
In the face of various macroeconomic challenges such as geopolitical tensions, inflation, and tighter financial conditions, Yinson added that it will continue to implement prudent strategies to manage inflation and interest rate risks.
"As part of our ongoing efforts to focus on the core areas of our business, we will also strategically and continuously review our non-FPSO businesses for streamlining opportunities," it said.
Yinson expressed confidence in the outlook for its core businesses, stating that its investments in building a strong sustainability foundation will position the company well to navigate ongoing uncertainties.

TNB set to expand renewables in Australia

TA Research said it is positive on TNB's expansion into the Australian energy market. PETALING JAYA: Tenaga Nasional Bhd 's (TNB) push into Australia's renewable energy (RE) sector is set to give the Malaysian utility a strategic foothold in one of the world's most ambitious energy transition markets. The move positions the group to capture opportunities from Australia's drive to raise RE generation to 82% of its national mix by 2030, from around 39%. In its report, TA Research, which recently participated in a technical visit to TNB's Australian operations under Spark Renewables Pty Ltd, said it is positive on TNB's expansion into the Australian energy market. Additionally, the national utility company in 2023 acquired Spark, which owns the operational 120 megawatts Bomen Solar Farm in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, and is building a pipeline of greenfield projects. 'Spark provides a strategic platform for TNB to gain exposure to Australia's aggressive energy transition given a national target of an 82% RE generation mix by 2030,' it noted. According to the research house, Spark complements the other two subsidiaries within TNB's New Energy Division, namely Vantage RE, which operates in the United Kingdom and Ireland markets, and TNB Renewables Sdn Bhd, which houses the group's domestic RE portfolio, with a collective target of achieving 14.3 gigawatts (GW) RE capacity by 2050. Rather than focusing on acquiring ready-made, operational assets, TNB's strategy with Spark marks a shift towards greenfield development, which can potentially offer higher returns. The company's expansion comes as Australia accelerates coal plant retirements – 90% of its 21GW coal capacity is due to be phased out by 2035 – requiring vast new solar, wind and storage capacity, as well as 4,000km of additional transmission lines over the next decade. 'Furthermore, the learnings from these more developed markets are valuable in shaping Malaysia's own energy transition, both from a technical as well as policy and regulatory standpoint,' TA Research added. The research house, however, highlighted that Spark's near-term earnings contribution will be 'relatively small given TNB's large earnings base from its regulated and generation business domestically'. TA Research kept its forecasts intact, saying, 'we make no change to our earnings estimates at this juncture while our 'buy' call and discounted cash flow-derived target price are maintained at RM17.30, notwithstanding the overhang from the ongoing additional tax assessment by the Inland Revenue Board.' It also pointed out that, following a Federal Court decision on a 2018 tax case, 'the total resubmission, consisting of close to 70,000 individual projects, will be scrutinised by the Finance Ministry before approval – in the best case, we reckon the resubmission could offset TNB's RM7.2bil (RM1.23 per share) cash exposure to the tax liability.'

KUALA LUMPUR: Here is a recap of the announcements that made headlines in Corporate Malaysia. Yinson Holdings Bhd has commenced operations of its largest FPSO, Agogo FPSO, under a 15-year charter worth over US$5bn. Iris Corporation Bhd failed in its appeal against a High Court decision to dismiss its lawsuit against nine former directors over losses from subscribing shares in a UK-based firm. Tenaga Nasional Bhd will maintain its regulated profit margin at 7.3% during the RP4 from 2025 to 2027 and any profits above this rate will be returned to consumers via the Electricity Industry Fund. MR DIY Group (M) Bhd saw its 2QFY2025 net profit rise 2.2% YoY to RM158.6mn from RM155.2mn, as higher revenue and margin gains offset increased administrative and operating expenses. ES Sunlogy Bhd said its joint development of a 155MWp large-scale solar photovoltaic power plant in Long Lama, Baram, Sarawak, will cost RM488.2mn and the project will be funded 80% via bank borrowings and 20% from internal funds. Vstecs Bhd 's 2QFY25 net profit jump to RM20.2mn from RM15.3mn a year ago, driven by higher sales across its ICT distribution, enterprise systems, and ICT services segments. Master-Pack Bhd posted a 74% YoY drop in 2QFY25 net profit to RM1.6mn from RM6.2mn, due to margin compression from price cuts and a RM130,000 forex loss. RCE Capital Bhd 's 1QFY26 net profit of RM26.0mn was down 14.3% YoY from RM30.3mn, weighed by higher impairment allowances on receivables. Eonmetall Group Bhd registered a RM4.1mn net loss in 2QFY2025, reversing from a RM702,000 net profit a year earlier, on lower margins, higher raw material usage, and increased factory overheads.

YTL Power surges ahead on Wessex Water tariff upside, data centre growth

KUALA LUMPUR: YTL Power International Bhd is charging ahead with renewed momentum, powered by robust earnings from its UK-based Wessex Water and rapid expansion in its data centre operations, even as some segments face near-term headwinds, according to CIMB Securities. Effective April 1, 2025 (FY25), Wessex Water implemented a 21 per cent year-on-year (YoY) hike in metered charges – well above the research firm's earlier assumption of a 13 per cent increase. The steeper tariff has prompted the research house to lift its FY25–FY27 core net profit (CNP) forecasts for Wessex Water by 38 per cent to 52 per cent. CIMB Securities now expects YTL Power's water and sewerage segment to deliver a strong earnings rebound, with CNP projected at RM242 million in FY25, surging to RM533 million in FY26 (+120 per cent YoY), and RM571 million in FY27 (+7 per cent YoY). Meanwhile, YTL Power's data centre operations are emerging as a robust growth pillar. Following a reassessment of operating expenditures, CIMB Securities revised its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) margin estimate for the co-location (co-lo) data centre segment from 50 per cent to 70 per cent, citing improved cost visibility and scalability. With an existing capacity of 188 megawatts (MW) fully leased, CIMB Securities expects YTL Power to kick-start new phases of development, incorporating an additional 160 MW to come online progressively in FY27–FY28. As a result, co-lo data centre CNP is forecast to rise from RM115 million in FY26 to RM431 million by FY29. Excluding this expansion, CIMB Securities's fair value estimate for YTL Power stands at RM4.08. The research firm had earlier revised its overall FY25–FY27 group-level CNP forecasts lower by 7 per cent to 17 per cent, reflecting a more cautious view on Power Seraya and AI data centre contributions, partially offset by improved earnings from Wessex Water and the co-lo data centre segment. CIMB Securties expects group CNP to decline 17 per cent YoY in FY25 before rebounding by 9 per cent in FY26 and inching up 1 per cent in FY27. Despite the downward revisions, CIMB Securities has raised its sum-of-parts-based target price for YTL Power, driven by a 72 sen increase in co-lo data centre fair value, a 12 sen uplift from Wessex Water, and an 11 sen boost from lower risk-free rate assumptions. However, the outlook for Power Seraya remains subdued. CIMB Securities slashed its FY25–FY27 CNP forecasts for the Singapore-based unit by 16 to 31 per cent, reflecting lower-than-expected pool and retail electricity prices for the first nine months of FY25, as well as the earlier expiry of favourable fuel supply contracts. Seraya's CNP is now expected to fall by 32 per cent in FY25, 12 per cent in FY26, and 15 per cent in FY27. Although near-term EBITDA/MWh assumptions have been revised down, CIMB maintains a long-term benchmark of S$60/MWh, resulting in a 14 per cent cut to Seraya's fair value, or 28 sen. Overall, CIMB Securities remains constructive on YTL Power's long-term trajectory, underpinned by Wessex Water's strong regulated earnings and the scaling potential of its data centre ventures.
