Insider rejects Steelers' T.J. Watt $40 million deal: 'I hadn't heard that number'

USA Today8 hours ago

The latest T.J. Watt contract update has been dismissed by insider Ian Rapoport.
On Friday's episode of The Pat McAfee Show, Rapoport was asked to speak to the legitimacy of insider James Palmer's report that Watt was expected to earn more than Myles Garrett's $40 million per year — and this was his response:
"I have not heard that," Rapoport said. "If he gets more than Myles, I would say that is awesome for T.J. These are the guys you pay. He's great. He's a good guy, he is a face of that franchise, and like, these are the kinds of guys who should be paid all the money and should retire as a member of the Steelers. ... I still think it's going to work out, but I hadn't heard that number and I hadn't heard that anything is imminent."
Garrett can breathe a sigh of relief, as Rapoport's comments somewhat instill confidence that the Browns superstar will remain the highest-paid defender.
It's worth noting that these updates are entirely speculative until Watt puts pen to paper — and hopefully that happens sooner than later, so both parties can put this situation to bed.

Browns close on purchase of 176 acres for new stadium in Brook Park

Factory of Sadness 2 is moving closer and closer to reality. With the Ohio legislature amending the Art Modell Law in a way that allows the Browns to move from Cleveland, the Browns have acquired a 176-acre parcel in Brook Park. Via Daryl Ruiter of 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland, the Browns and Haslam Sports Group closed on the sale on Friday, at a price in excess of $76 million. Governor Mike DeWine is expected to sign the relevant provisions into law next week. The Browns hope to break ground in early 2026, with a goal of opening the new domed stadium in 2029. The Browns will be sacrificing the home-field advantage that comes from playing in the elements. They'll be the first team in the AFC North to move indoors. Once that happens, only the AFC East will consist of four open-air, in-the-elements stadiums.

Former Steeler Has Bold Take Regarding Aaron Rodgers

Former Steeler Has Bold Take Regarding Aaron Rodgers originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Steelers have a brand new quarterback in all-time great Aaron Rodgers. But some do not know exactly what to expect from the 41-year-old field general. Advertisement One former Steeler thinks the team could resort to drastic measures if things are not going according to plan. On a recent episode of Nightcap, franchise legend James Harrison said that the team should think about cutting Rodgers and giving some opportunities to their other guys if things are not going well around midseason. "I think they can make it work if they're winning," Harrison said, "If they start losing and it's looking like they're not gonna make above .500, I think it gets real ugly, real fast. To the point where they may just be like, 'you know what, let's let this dude go midseason. For Aaron, let's just get him outta here and put one of these other quarterbacks in.'" Rodgers had one of the more disappointing years of his career this past season with the New York Jets. As a result, some have questioned if he still has it, but his stats were not as bad as one would expect. Advertisement He still racked up 3,897 passing yards and 28 touchdowns on 63 percent completion. He did have 11 interceptions, but that was still not too bad compared to the rest of the league. Rodgers has stated that the 2025 season may very well be his last season in the league, so he will be looking to prove the doubters wrong and leave his mark with the legendary AFC North franchise. TruEdge Sports backs off in its criticism of George Pickens over youth camp cancellation

Earlier this week, TruEdge Sports postponed a youth football camp that was supposed to feature former Steelers (now Cowboys) receiver George Pickens. The email sent to those who purchased tickets for the camp included strong language regarding Pickens's cancellation. Now, TruEdge Sports has sent a fresh email clarifying — and apologizing for — the prior message. 'At TruEdge Sports, we take pride in fostering strong relationships with the athletes, families, and communities we serve,' the company said. 'Recently, a statement was issued regarding our scheduled youth camp with George Pickens that did not accurately reflect the full scope of communications or the context surrounding the event. 'At no point did George communicate with us directly, and our communications with George's representatives led to confusion about the camp's status and future direction. 'Regrettably, the language used in our original message mischaracterized George's intent and actions. While our frustrations stemmed from the uncertainty surrounding the event, it was never our intention to publicly question George's professionalism, integrity, or commitment to the community. We now understand that the tone and implications of our message were not only inappropriate but inconsistent with our values as an organization. 'We recognize that he was navigating a significant career transition during this time and that his team kept open lines of communication with us.' That's a far cry from the prior comments made by TruEdge Sports. The earlier message said that Pickens 'decided to walk back on his word' to attend the camp, and that his 'sudden decision to back out not only reflects a disappointing lack of accountability, but also shows a disregard for the families and children who were excited to meet him.' 'Let us say again,' the prior message concluded, 'we are incredibly frustrated by George Pickens' lack of professionalism and his decision to abandon the commitment he personally confirmed after his trade.' TruEdge is now singing a very different tune, presumably after hearing from Pickens's camp — and possibly after being threatened with potential litigation for the public criticism it heaped upon him. While the new message isn't as clear as it could have been, it seems as if TruEdge Sports is saying it had gotten the facts wrong regarding Pickens's handling of the situation. Still, the new message continues to omit an open-ended offer to fully refund the payment made for the 'George Pickens Youth Football Camp' on June 28, which has now become a camp featuring Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth on July 20. After sending a message that tries to make things right as to Pickens, here's hoping TruEdge Sports will soon be sending a message that makes things right as to those who paid for the camp that was supposed to happen on Saturday.
