Germany through to Women's Euro semis after shootout win over France
The Germans pulled off a stunning comeback from a goal down and a straight red card for defender Kathrin Hendrich after 13 minutes, battling their way back into the game and eventually getting the better of their opponents in a thrilling shootout.
Hendrich was sent off after a VAR review established that she had pulled the hair of Griege Mbock Bathy in the box, and Grace Geyoro's subsequent penalty had the power to get over the line despite Berger getting a strong hand to it.
On the ropes and struggling, the Germans suddenly levelled, Sjoeke Nuesken catching the defence napping by darting towards Klara Buehl's near-post corner and flashing a header into the net in the 25th minute.
With the well-organised Germans defending doggedly, France had two goals ruled out for offside and Nuesken had a second-half penalty saved, and neither side managed to score in extra time.
The game went to penalties, and Berger got the shootout off to a great start for the Germans by saving from Amel Majri, but they were brought back to level pegging when Sara Daebrtiz struck her spot kick off the crossbar and over the goal.
Berger then fired home from the spot herself before diving to her left to deny Alice Sombath, sending the Germans through to the last four.
They will face Spain on Wednesday, a day after England face Italy in the other semi-final.

Ice hockey player dies in fall at Ibiza hotel
A 'hugely talented and charismatic' ice hockey player has died after falling from a third-floor hotel balcony in Ibiza. Gary Kelly, 19, who played for the Dundee Stars, died at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel on Monday. The incident comes a fortnight another Scottish tourist, Evan Thomson, 26, fell to his death on the premises on July 7. Kelly's team paid tribute to him on the club website. 'We send our thoughts and condolences to Gary's family, partner, and all his friends at this extremely difficult time,' the statement said. 'Everyone at the club including players, staff, management, and ownership are heartbroken to hear this tragic news. 'Gary was a hugely talented and charismatic individual who had a great future ahead of him. His loss will impact many in the ice hockey community and beyond. He will be sadly missed. 'We respect and support the family's request for privacy at this extremely difficult time.' After the deaths of Kelly and Thomson, the Ibiza Rocks Hotel said: 'We are deeply shocked and devastated by the recent incidents that have tragically occurred. 'Our priority is to support those affected and their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time, and to fully assist the authorities with their investigations. 'The safety and wellbeing of our guests has, and always will remain, our highest priority.' Tributes poured in from other UK ice hockey teams. A statement on X from the Glasgow Clan said: 'The Glasgow Clan would like to express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Gary Kelly. 'This is truly heartbreaking news. Local police confirmed that it was investigating Kelly's death. The Civil Guard said: 'We are investigating the death of a 19-year-old British man at a hotel in San Antonio in Ibiza. The alarm was raised around 12.40am this morning [Monday]. 'Our officers were sent to the scene but the man in question was already dead by the time help arrived. The fall was from the third floor of the hotel to an outside part of the complex. 'Court officials authorised the removal of his body at 2.40am this morning. The fall could be accidental based on the early information obtained from cameras but as part of the investigation possible witnesses will need to be located and interviewed. 'The results of the post-mortem [examination] will also be important to the investigation.'

Watchdog must fine social media companies that are slow to remove racism after Jess Carter abuse, says culture secretary
The online safety regulator should use powers to fine social media companies that are not quickly removing racism, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy told Sky News, after concerns were raised by England defender Jess Carter. Carter has declared herself ready to play in the Women's European Championship semi-final against Italy on Tuesday after speaking out on the hate she has faced online during the tournament. Players have expressed frustration they are having to use their platform to pressure the tech firms, given how often footballers have had to deal with racist abuse. There is now the Online Safety Act which should be compelling the companies to take action. "We've introduced new laws so that platforms are under a legal obligation to take down that sort of disgusting content immediately," Ms Nandy told Sky News. "And they can be pursued through fines, through Ofcom, if they don't do it. "It's now up to those platforms and up to Ofcom to fulfil those roles that we've given them and make sure that this is stamped out online, that it's dealt with very quickly." But Kick It Out chairman Sanjay Bhandari told Sky News on Sunday that "it's got worse on social media, not better" - singling out Elon Musk's X and Mark Zuckerberg's Instagram. Neither of the companies has responded to requests for comment, including via a public X post. England defender Lucy Bronze said "online abuse is getting worse and worse" in women's football. Ms Nandy said: "The racial abuse that's been directed at Jess Carter is utterly disgusting and unfortunately is too common for women at the top of their game, not just in football but across sport as a whole. "We're considering as a government what more we can do to protect women players who reach those levels of exposure." The government has made dealing with sports issues a priority, with legislation passed today to introduce an independent regulator for men's football. The watchdog aims to ensure clubs are run sustainably and are accountable to their fans. Ms Nandy said: "There are now protections in law for fans and for clubs to make sure that we have really fit and proper owners; that there is somebody who can tackle rogue owners when problems arise, that we get a proper financial flow to ensure the sustainability of clubs throughout the football pyramid and to make that fans are put back at the heart of the game where they belong." The Premier League remains concerned the regulator could harm the success of its competition through unintended consequences.
