Government to discontinue Bharat brand products as food prices stabilise

Time of India2 days ago

The government has decided to discontinue
Bharat brand products
as prices of essential food items such as wheat, rice and pulses have stabilised, with food inflation falling to 1.78% in April from 8.7% a year ago.
With this, the Centre has made the Bharat brand, a label it launched in 2023 to provide food grains and other essential food items to the middle class at subsidised prices, a periodic tool for price stabilisation instead of a perennial product.
"We have decided to discontinue the Bharat brand products as prices of all major food items have come down because of increase in production," said a senior government official from the consumer affairs, food and public distribution ministry, who did not wish to be identified.
Retail stores owned by government agencies - National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) and National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India (NCCF) - have stopped selling Bharat Atta, Bharat Rice and Bharat dals in their stores.
India has produced record rice, wheat and maize in the 2024-25 kharif season, according to the agriculture and farmers' welfare ministry's second advance estimates of production of major agricultural crops. Production of major pulses - tur, gram and lentils - has also gone up compared to the previous season, bringing prices under control.
The forecast of a good monsoon during the June-September period has led to expectations of a robust production which will help keep prices under check. "There does not seem to be an immediate need to sell food at subsidised prices," the official said.
The cost of home-cooked vegetarian and non-vegetarian thalis declined by about 6% each year-on-year in May, said ratings agency Crisil in its latest 'Roti Rice Rate' report. However, there is a possibility of launching the next phase of the brand in case prices go up in the future or if the government's procurement of a certain item increases, the official said.

UP CM directs officials to take action against fake, shell companies

'Tax evasion is a national crime that negatively impacts development plans and welfare schemes,' he said. While conducting a high-level review of the State Tax Department, the CM directed officials to ensure transparency in tax collection and adopt a policy of technological efficiency and strict enforcement. Lucknow, Jun 7 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday directed officials to take action against shell companies to stop the attempts to misuse the facilities meant for genuine traders. Stressing that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a consumer-based tax system, he noted that areas with higher population density are naturally expected to generate more tax revenue. He instructed officials to develop special strategies for zones where tax collection is below average. Adityanath directed that information on suspicious firms registered under Central GST (CGST) be shared with the Centre for cancellation of their registration. For firms under State GST (SGST), he ordered in-depth departmental investigations, and if irregularities are found, their registration should be canceled and FIRs lodged. The CM emphasised the need for on-site inspection of all newly registered firms, stating 'fake companies should not be allowed to obstruct the rights of honest taxpayers'. CM Adityanath said that such acts are an attempt to misuse the facilities meant for genuine traders, which is unforgivable. 'Such inspections are essential to ensure that genuine businesses can operate fairly and without interference,' he said. During the meeting, officials informed the CM that Rs 18,161.59 crore in GST and VAT had been collected during April and May against the financial year 2025-26 target of Rs 1,75,725 crore. Himachal CM Sukhu inaugurates Rs 75.10 crore development projects in Gagret, criticizes BJP for financial distress

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], June 7 (ANI): Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Saturday inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for development projects worth Rs 75.10 crore in the Gagret Assembly Constituency while launching a sharp critique against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for pushing the state into financial distress through mismanagement and excessive borrowing during its previous regime, as per an official release. Addressing a public meeting at Daulatpur Chowk in Una district, Sukhu announced initiatives like a 400-metre span bridge on the Swan River, water supply schemes, and healthcare improvements, alongside his government's commitment to economic recovery through tough decisions, as the state aims to become self-reliant amidst ongoing challenges. Sukhu stated that during its regime, the BJP kept on boasting about the 'double engine Sarkar' but could not significantly contribute to the development of the state and raised loans from the Centre, thus pushing the state into a financial crisis. He stated that to make Himachal Pradesh self-reliant, the government was determined to take some harsh decisions to improve the economy with the cooperation of the people of the State. Sukhu highlighted projects like the Daulatpur-Bhadrakali road, in which Rs 15 crore had been spent; Gagret Hospital's new building; and the upcoming Hoshiarpur-Nadaun four-lane road, while assuring the filling of vacant doctor posts and addressing water scarcity through tube wells. The Himachal Pradesh CM also mentioned the Bulk Drug Park in Haroli, set to begin construction soon. He further criticised the BJP's education policies for dropping Himachal's ranking to 21st, leading to school mergers for quality education. As per the release, the other development initiatives include a Rs 42.82 crore bridge on the Amb-Ambota road, four bridges under PMGSY-III costing Rs 2.70 crore, and infrastructure projects like the Government Degree College Daulatpur Chowk building at Rs 2.79 crore and water schemes totalling Rs 16.57 crore across multiple villages. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri also noted a Rs 170 crore investment in Gagret's water schemes, criticising the Centre for sanctioning only Rs 137 crore of the expected Rs 2,000 crore, and affirmed the state's advocacy for its due funds. The Chief Minister said that Una has emerged as the fastest-growing district in the state and is being developed as a 'Solar Hub' of the state, with 163 MW projects under construction and promising job creation and industrial growth.
