Former Georgia basketball star works out for Hawks ahead of NBA draft
Georgia Bulldogs freshman forward Asa Newell recently just finished working out for the Atlanta Hawks. Atlanta holds the 13th pick in the 2025 NBA draft.
Newell, an SEC All-Freshman Team selection, has been generating significant NBA draft interest. He has already worked out for the Portland Trail Blazers (holding the No. 11 pick) and the Chicago Bulls (No. 12 pick). On Monday, he completed a workout for a third lottery-bound franchise.

His outstanding freshman performance, which earned him conference-wide attention, saw him average 15.4 points and 6.9 rebounds per game while shooting 54.3% from the field. Newell is the 15th player in program history to receive the SEC All-Freshman distinction, and notably, he was the only Bulldog recognized by the conference, as no other Georgia players were selected for any of the All-Conference or All-Defensive teams.
In his sole season in Athens, Newell started all 33 games for the Bulldogs. He reached double-digit scoring in 30 of those contests, including six games with 20 points or more. He led the team in scoring 20 times and in rebounding 16 times, and tied Anthony Edwards' program record with four SEC Freshman of the Week honors. Newell helped Georgia return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015.
According to Lauren Williams of the AJC, the Hawks also worked out Alabama's Cliff Omoruyi, Florida's Will Richard and Michigan State's Jase Richardson.

What happened to the Celtics against the Knicks, and what's next this offseason? What happened to the Celtics against the Knicks, and what's next this offseason? What happened to the Celtics against the Knicks, and what's next this offseason? Derrick White is going international this offseason. The Boston Celtics star is heading to Singapore to try his hand in coaching. White will be one of the coaches during a four-day camp for the 15th edition of Baseball Without Borders (BWB) Asia, which will be held at the Singapore Basketball Centre next weekend. Sixty of the top youth basketball players in Asia will take part in the camp, and White is one of the three current NBA players who will participate. In addition to White, Tyrese Maxey of the Philadelphia 76ers and Doup Reath of the Portland Trail Blazers will coach in the camp. A handful of NBA assistant coaches -- including former Boston College star Jared Dudley, who is now on the Dallas Mavericks staff -- and WNBA legend Ticha Penicherio are also heading overseas to coach. This marks the second straight summer White is going international. After he helped lead the Celtics to an NBA Championship in 2024, White played a hand in the 2024 U.S. Men's Olympic team winning gold in Paris. At least this time around, he won't be hitting the floor too much and can rest up for the upcoming season. During the BWB camp, White and the other coaches will lead campers through a number of activities, including movement efficiency drills, offensive and defensive skill stations, three-point contests, and 5-on-5 games. There will also be sessions that include lessons on life-skills and leadership development. The camp will conclude on Sunday, June 22 with a ceremony to hand out awards for the camp's MVP, the Three-Point Champion, the Defensive MVP, and a Sportsmanship Award. Basketball Without Borders Basketball Without Borders was organized by the NBA in conjunction with FIBA and has hosted camps since 2001 in 53 cities across 33 counties. There have been over 4,600 participants in Basketball Without Borders camps over the years, and 132 of them have moved on to the NBA or WNBA. That list includes Josh Giddey of the Chicago Bulls and Josh Green of the Charlotte Hornets (both from Australia) and Rui Hachimura of the Los Angeles Lakers (Japan).

Top Landing Spots For Russell Westbrook After Nuggets News
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Denver Nuggets star guard Russell Westbrook has reportedly opted to enter free agency, declining his player option with the Nuggets. This now sends Westbrook into unrestricted free agency, and he will be eligible to sign with any team he wants. Read more news: Nuggets' Russell Westbrook Makes a Surprising Decision on NBA Future Westbrook had a $3.4 million player option, but he must believe that he can get more on the open market. Or the veteran would prefer a multi-year deal, giving the guarantee of a contract. More NBA news: Celtics Could Have Perfect Trade Partner With New Jrue Holiday Rumors But with this news, one of the more exciting players to ever step onto a basketball court is now a free agent. So, where could he land? Russell Westbrook #4 of the Denver Nuggets walks down the floor during the first half of game seven of the Western Conference semifinals against the Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center on May 18, 2025... Russell Westbrook #4 of the Denver Nuggets walks down the floor during the first half of game seven of the Western Conference semifinals against the Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center on May 18, 2025 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. More Photo byHere are the five best landing spots for Westbrook as he enters the twilight of his NBA career: 5. Minnesota Timberwolves The Timberwolves fell short in the Western Conference Finals once again and could be looking to change some things up. With veteran Mike Conley not looking the same as he once did, Westbrook could be an interesting option. Putting Westbrook and Anthony Edwards on the floor together could be an opponent's worst nightmare, at least energy-wise. But the fit of Westbrook as the backup guard for this team does make some sense. 4. Orlando Magic One of the biggest issues with the Magic last season was a lack of offensive production. While Westbrook isn't the same player that he once was, he can still provide a spark to a team. Putting him on a defensive-heavy team like Orlando could be a risk. But his explosiveness may be able to help this Magic team unlock something on the offensive end of the floor. 3. Sacramento Kings Sacramento is reportedly looking to bring in help at the point guard position this offseason. Westbrook may not be a starting-caliber player any longer, but he could definitely help Sacramento out. Much like in Denver, the Kings' offense runs through center Domantas Sabonis. Sabonis is nowhere near as talented as Nikola Jokic, but Westbrook has experience playing in a system like this now. 2. Denver Nuggets The Westbrook experiment worked out fairly well in Denver this past season. The veteran guard could be opting out with the hope of resigning for a new deal with the Nuggets. Westbrook was crucial to the Nuggets this year, and he fit in well alongside the other core players. Jokic seemed to enjoy playing alongside Westbrook, which in Denver, massively helps the chance he could return. 1. Oklahoma City Thunder Even with the Thunder being in the NBA Finals, adding Westbrook could be a full-circle moment. The only thing missing from Westbrook's career is a title, and the Thunder could offer him a great chance to win one next season. Westbrook could play the final years of his career with the team that started it all for him. The veteran is still very much loved in Oklahoma City, and there aren't any fans in the NBA who appreciate him more. This is easily the best landing spot for the future Hall-of-Famer next season.
