'Sitting In Your Lounge Watching...': Kevin Pietersen Backs Ben Stokes' Draw Demand
Kevin Pietersen has backed Ben Stokes' call for an early draw in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, defending his frustration after two days of fielding without a result.
Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has backed compatriot and Test captain Ben Stokes over the latter's demand to call for an early draw, saying that having fielded for two days and with no result in sight, he wasn't wrong to ask for a draw and the ones sitting in their lounges shouldn't be judging him.
Drama unfolded in the high-intensity Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in Manchester on Sunday, July 27, after Indian batters Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar refused Stokes' offer to call off the fourth Test and settle for a draw before the beginning of the final hour of play.
There is a provision that permits both skippers to shake hands and agree to a draw if they feel that the possibility of a result is impossible, but with Jadeja and Sundar approaching their centuries, they were in no mood to back down.
'2 days fielding and no result on the cards, you WANT to get off the field! You cannot have a pop at Ben Stokes for his frustration. Very easy to have a pop at him when you're sitting in your lounge watching. You're NOT in the battle. Leave the men in the ring to be emotional," Pietersen tweeted on Monday afternoon.
Having worked hard to earn a creditable draw, Jadeja and Washington, batting on 89 and 80, refused Stokes' offer after he had approached the umpire, which irked Stokes no end.
Pietersen, while backing Stokes, also lauded Jadeja and Sundar's efforts, who batted for two sessions to save the game.
'And the Stokes issue should NOT distract from the batters who batted to save the Test! Outstanding effort and one which makes The Oval a v v important Test," Pietersen tweeted.

With both approaching their centuries after having saved the game for India, who began their second innings 311 runs in arrears, Jadeja and Washington exercised their rights to continue batting.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill backed the decision to carry on batting.
'If someone is batting on 90 and the other one is batting on 85, don't they deserve a hundred? Would they have walked off if someone from England's side had been batting on 90 or 85," Gambhir questioned at the post-match press conference.

Lee Fortis accused of 'double standards' as picture with Brendon McCullum goes viral: 'Very good reason why Poms are hated'
Indian cricket team fans did not held back as they called out Lee Fortis' 'double standards' after his verbal fight with coach Gautam Gambhir amid the curator's picture with England coach Brendon McCullum going viral. read more The pictures of The Oval chief curator Lee Fortis standing on the stadium's pitch with England coach Brendon McCullum are going viral after an intense verbal argument with Indian counterpart Gautam Gambhir on Tuesday. The fracas started after the Indian support staff were asked by Fortis to stay 2.5 metres away from the pitch during their inspection, revealed Indian batting coach Shitanshu Kotak. Fortis has also been accused of yelling at one of the members of the Indian support staff team for carrying an ice box close to the pitch. Amid the accusations, multiple pictures of Fortis being quite lenient towards the England coach, McCullum, are going viral on social media. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Oval curator accused of 'double standards' vs India In one of the pictures, taken by cricket journalist Adam Collins in July 2023, McCullum and Fortis can be seen standing on the pitch two days before the fifth Ashes Test against England began at The Oval. Brendon McCullum takes his first inspection at the pitch 48hrs out with The Oval's head groundsman Lee Fortis. Funnily enough, looks like every other pitch here in recent seasons. #Ashes — Adam Collins (@collinsadam) July 25, 2023 In another picture, Fortis can be seen sharing a laugh with McCullum and the England men's cricket team Managing Director, Rob Key, a day before India went to inspect the pitch. Why did the Oval pitch curator Lee Fortis allow Brendon McCullum and Rob Key to step on the pitch WITHOUT any issues? But the Curator put restrictions on Indian staff to stay away from the pitch at least 2.5 meters. — Farrago Abdullah Parody (@abdullah_0mar) July 29, 2025 Kotak claimed that England's visit to inspect the pitch went swiftly as Fortis had no issues with where they were standing or what they did. 'That's what made it awkward. England's staff came in the day before in casual clothes and nobody told them where to stand or not stand,' Kotak said. Kotak also pointed out that Fortis was arrogant in his behaviour while dealing with professionals. 'Curators need to understand that they're dealing with highly skilled, intelligent professionals. We're extremely careful around the pitch. No one had spikes on, and nothing was damaged,' Kotak said. 'You can be protective—but not to the point of arrogance.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'This isn't an antique that'll break if you touch it. Come match day, players will be diving and sliding all over that square.' Indian fans slam Fortis on social media Meanwhile, fans have accused Fortis of 'double standards' as they compared his behaviour with Gambhir and McCullum. 'Curator Lee Fortis & England coach Brendon McCullum standing on the pitch, today & during Ashes 2023 Take your double standards, hypocrisy & shove it in the place where the sun doesn't shines There is a very good reason why Poms are hated worldwide as being arrogant & hypocrites,' an Indian cricket fan wrote on X. Another fan questioned: 'The Oval's chief curator Lee Fortis was telling Indian team & head coach #GautamGambhir to stay 2.5 metres away from this pitch. But Brendon McCullum was allowed to chill right on the middle of the pitch.'

'It becomes a different beast': R Ashwin on Indian team after Gambhir's altercation with The Oval curator
Gautam Gambhir had heated argument with the Oval's chief curator. ( A heated confrontation erupted at The Oval between India's head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief curator Lee Fortis during the team's final preparations for the fifth Test. The dispute began when Fortis asked India's support staff to maintain distance from the pitch, leading to an angry exchange that saw Gambhir berating the curator. This incident occurred during Tuesday's training session, adding tension to the team's preparation. The situation escalated when Fortis requested the Indian support staff to stay 2.5 meters away from the playing surface. Gambhir's sharp response included telling Fortis, "You don't tell any of us what we need to do, you have no right to tell us, you are just a groundsman, nothing beyond." Fortis responded by threatening to report the incident. IND vs ENG: Gautam Gambhir loses cool during heated exchange with ground staff at The Oval ahead of 5th Test Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin offered a unique perspective on the confrontation. He compared it to the Sydney Test match atmosphere and suggested that such tensions might actually boost team morale in the away camp. "When adversity is against the Indian team, somebody will rise up. When we are pushed against the wall, the Indian team becomes a different kettle of fish. It becomes a different beast," Ashwin remarked, suggesting that the recent tensions, including the dispute, might work in India's favour. Ashwin further cautioned that England's actions might have inadvertently motivated the Indian team, noting that such confrontations often bring out the best in Indian cricket. Ashwin concluded by suggesting that while good cricket from England could still determine the outcome, provoking the Indian team might not have been the wisest strategy, saying "somehow I feel this is not the way it has to be triggered."
