Urgent recall for tuna salad over fears of bacteria that can KILL if eaten

Daily Mail18-07-2025
Tuna salad products sold in four states have been urgently recalled over fears of potentially deadly bacteria.
Oregon-based Reser's Fine Foods has voluntarily recalled multiple products containing tuna salad due to potential listeria, a type of bacteria that causes severe diarrhea and muscle aches.
The bacteria was found to have possibly contaminated breadcrumbs used in the products.
Affected products were sold at stores like Albertsons in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma.
No illnesses have been reported, but listeria is thought to kill about 200 Americans every year and can lead to miscarriages.
The FDA has urged consumers who purchased the products to dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
Anyone who purchased impacted tuna salad products should also clean and sanitize any surfaces that may have come into contact with them to reduce the risk of cross-contamination.

Listeria, also called Listeriosis, is a serious infection caused by eating food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
It can be found in moist environments, soil, water, decaying vegetation and animals, and can survive refrigeration and other food preservation measures.
Many foods can harbor the bug, but it is usually found in unpasteurized milk, soft cheeses and ready-to-eat foods, such as prepacked sandwiches. Cooked shellfish, cured meats and fish, including sushi and pre-cut fruit, are also a risk.
Most people who eat food contaminated with Listeria will not become seriously ill. But in some cases, it can cause confusion and seizures, miscarriages among pregnant women, and even death.
This can happen when the infection spreads beyond the gut and affects the central nervous system, which can lead to numbness and seizures.
The CDC estimates 1,600 Americans become infected with listeria every year, and about 260 die.

FDA flags problems with two Boston Scientific heart devices tied to injuries and deaths

U.S. health regulators are warning doctors and patients about safety issues with two separate Boston Scientific heart devices recently linked to injuries and deaths. The Food and Drug Administration issued two alerts Wednesday about electrical problems tied to the company's heart-zapping defibrillator systems and a separate issue with a heart implant used to reduce stroke risk. The agency said the company's Endotak Reliance defibrillator wires can become calcified, leading to failures in delivering life-saving shocks to the heart, according to the FDA. Defibrillators are surgically placed in the upper chest, where they monitor irregular heartbeats and use electrical shocks to jolt the heart back to normal. As of July 24, Boston Scientific has reported 386 serious injuries and 16 deaths associated with this issue, the agency said. Ten of the deaths were judged to be due to the device failing to function properly, the company said in an email. Four were linked to attempts to surgically remove the devices from patients and two others were deemed unrelated to the implants. Boston Scientific's wires were distributed between 2002 and 2021 and are no longer available, the company noted in its letter to doctors. Some patients will need to have the devices replaced, though physicians should weigh the risks of the removal procedure. In a separate notice, the FDA said Boston Scientific recently updated instructions for implanting its Watchman device, which closes a portion of the heart's left atrium to reduce the risk of stroke. In a letter to physicians, the company noted that there is an increased risk of blockages in the bloodstream depending on the level of anesthesia for patients undergoing the initial implantation procedure. Watchman is an alternative to long-term treatment with blood thinners for patients at increased risk of stroke. As of July 30, the company has reported 120 serious injuries and 17 deaths related to the issue, the FDA said. A company investigation concluded that the safety issue 'is not associated with the design or manufacture of any component of the Watchman system. Heart devices, including defibrillators and other implants, are Boston Scientific's largest business, making up two-thirds of its $5 billion in revenue for the most recent quarter. Shares of Boston Scientific Corp. fell nearly 1.8 percent Wednesday to close at $102.95 in trading. ___ The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Department of Science Education and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. US FDA approves Jazz Pharma's drug for rare brain tumor

Aug 6 (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Wednesday that it has approved Jazz Pharmaceuticals' (JAZZ.O), opens new tab drug to treat diffuse midline glioma, a rare and aggressive tumor, in adults and children aged one year and older. This marks the first FDA approval of a systemic therapy for diffuse midline glioma with a specific mutation that has progressed after previous treatments, the agency said. Diffuse midline glioma (DMG) is a rare and aggressive brain tumor that primarily affects children and young adults. It develops in the brain's and spinal cord's midline structures, such as the brainstem, thalamus, and spinal cord. Jazz Pharmaceuticals acquired the drug in March through its $935 million purchase of Chimerix.

Urgent recall over fridge staple that could cause pain, diarrhea and rashes

Food watchdogs have warned that a mislabeled product poses a 'risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction.' Hans Kissle, a maker of prepared foods and deli salads, has voluntarily recalled 66 units of a misidentified pasta salad. Lid labels claim the food is a red bliss potato salad that doesn't have wheat. But the product inside is filled with grain that shoppers with gluten allergies must avoid. The 16-ounce packaged side dish was sold at Stop and Shop in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York. Impacted products have a sell-by date of August 20. Shoppers who bought the product can return the pasta dish to the grocer for a refund. No injuries or sickness have been reported from the mislabeled product. Consumers with wheat intolerance can experience a wide range of digestive issues if they accidentally consume the product, including stomach pain, difficulty with bowel movements, and skin rashes. Hans Kissle didn't immediately respond to the Daily Mail's request for comment. The federal Food Safety Service says shoppers who have accidentally brought home improperly labeled food should wash all utensils, surfaces, and refrigerators that have come into contact with the recalled food. Hans Kissle's mischaracterized pasta salad joins a list of other grocery products that are under urgent recall. Last week, Ada Valley Meat Company recalled 1,065 pounds of frozen ground beef after discovering foreign materials in the product mix. The beef was shipped to restaurants in California, Delaware, Illinois, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. No injuries have been reported. On Monday, the FDA escalated its warning on Bunge North America's on-Hydrogenated European Style Butter Blend.
