Why Rick Moranis returning for Spaceballs 2 is a big deal

Why Rick Moranis returning for Spaceballs 2 is a big deal Thursday's announcement of the Spaceballs sequel hitting theaters in 2027 with the great Mel Brooks back as the omnipotent (and Spaceballs merch-laden) Yogurt was already great enough to begin with. However, the reported return of legendary comedic actor Rick Moranis as the Darth Vader spoof Dark Helmet by Deadline pushed this wave of movie news over the edge into truly special territory. Moranis remains one of the most beloved comedy actors of his generation, as the SC-TV alum transitioned into a successful film career. Beloved films of his include the Ghostbusters series, Strange Brew, Little Shop of Horrors, the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids series, Parenthood, Streets of Fire, My Blue Heaven and Little Giants. Outside of a handful of voice roles, including Disney's Brother Bear, Moranis hasn't acted in a live-action film since 1997's direct-to-video Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves. He hasn't acted in a live-action film sent to theaters since the Moranis-Tom Arnold two-hander Big Bully in 1996. Moranis did provide a voice cameo on the ABC sitcom The Goldbergs as Dark Helmet in 2018, but this will be his first official reprisal of the character and his biggest project in film or television since Brother Bear. Moranis never technically retired, but he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2015 he has no regrets about his extended acting hiatus. The publication wrote that his late wife, Ann, died from breast cancer in 1997, and he chose to focus on raising his two children after that tragic event. 'I was working with really interesting people, wonderful people,' Moranis told THR about his life before his break from the industry. 'I went from that to being at home with a couple of little kids, which is a very different lifestyle. But it was important to me. I have absolutely no regrets whatsoever. My life is wonderful.' Moranis had agreed to star in Disney's Honey, I Shrunk the Kids reboot with Josh Gad, but the latter shared in 2023 that the COVID-19 pandemic, scheduling and budget concerns all played a role in derailing that project. Now 72, Moranis will now officially work with Gad and reunite with Brooks and Bill Pullman, who will reprise his Spaceballs role as the Luke Skywalker/Han Solo parody Lone Starr, for the comedy sequel. Gad co-wrote the film's script and is expected to have an acting role in the project. Nope's Keke Palmer also reportedly has a role in the sequel. While this isn't Moranis' first sequel, the Spaceballs follow-up's 2027 arrival will bring Moranis back to the screen for the first time in 31 years. May the Schwartz be with him in his anticipated theatrical return.

MPSE Bans Projects That Use Generative AI From Golden Reel Awards Consideration

The Motion Picture Sound Editors said Thursday that it will no longer consider projects in which Generative AI is used to create elements for the final soundtrack for the group's annual Golden Reel Awards. The move comes the same day as members of animation, actor and writers guilds gathered at France's Annecy Animation Film Festival to protest the use of the growing technology, which has many in the creative industries wary about what AI means for their creativity, skills and livelihoods. More from Deadline Animation, Writers & Actors Guilds Hold 'Historic' Anti-Generative AI Protest At Annecy: 'GenAI Seeks Not To Support Artists, But To Destroy Them' MPSE Golden Reel Awards: 'Wicked', 'Dune: Part Two', 'Wild Robot' Among Film Winners – Full List Late-Night Talk Emmy Category Reduced To Three Nominations The MPSE's new rules surrounding GenAI will be added to the guidelines for the next Golden Reels, the annual awards ceremony that honors outstanding achievement in sound editing, sound design, music editing and Foley artistry in film, television and gaming. 'We support and prize technological advances that assist artists in their creations,' the MPSE said in a press release today announcing the move. 'However, standards for the legal and ethical use of Generative A.I. have yet to be established and are far from being accepted broadly. What we choose to promote as award-worthy points to how much we value the human endeavor of artistic creation.' The MPSE added that its board of directors and A.I. committee are 'poised to evolve our stance on this issue' and pledged to 'remain open to what the technological future may bring in support of the humans working in the craft of sound editorial.' 'It is an enormous question to ask: how much of our humanity are we willing to give away to technology, especially in the arts?' MPSE president David Barber said. 'The time to ponder that question, set up boundaries, and guide how A.I. is assimilated into our workflow and lives was yesterday. The dam of A.I. has broken, and the waters are upon us. Choosing what we embrace as award-worthy filmmaking is a way of diverting those waters while we grapple with this exponential change. As A.I. technology infiltrates and permeates our industry, rules and accepted practices for its use need to emerge that keep artists at the forefront.' 'The Traitors' Season 4: Here's what we know so far

Hear this story The round table could be right around the corner. More episodes of the American version of "The Traitors" are expected to be in the works as the show has already been renewed for two more seasons. The reality competition show, which airs on Peacock, follows a group of contestants who are secretly split into two groups: traitors and faithfuls. The faithfuls must determine who the traitors are and banish them from the game in order to win the grand prize. From "Big Brother" gamers to "Real Housewives" stars, "The Traitors" features a cast of reality TV legends and other big-name public figures. The show has quickly become a fan favorite since its first U.S. season aired in 2023, earning an Emmy Award and becoming the most-watched unscripted series in the country, as NBC touted. Here's what we know about the upcoming season. When is 'The Traitors' Season 4 coming out? NBC announced in August 2024 that "The Traitors" was renewed for Seasons 4 and 5. While a release date hasn't been announced, it's likely that a new season could follow the previous three premiere dates, which all fell in early January. Season 1 aired on Jan. 12, 2023, and Season 2 aired on the same day a year later. Season 3 began on Jan. 9 this year and wrapped up in early March. Filming for Season 3 took place in early summer 2024, cast members from the season have previously said. 'The Traitors' Season 4 cast The Season 3 cast was revealed in June 2024, so some fans expect a possible announcement for the upcoming season sometime soon. USA TODAY has reached out to Peacock for more information. While the first season of the American version featured a combination of both reality TV stars and regular people, the previous two seasons included only groups of public figures, so it's likely the upcoming season could be the same. The likes of "Survivor" winners, "The Bachelor" stars and even a member of the British royal family have appeared on the show. Season 3's winners included Dolores Catania of "The Real Housewives of New Jersey," Dylan Efron of "Down to Earth with Zac Efron," British aristocrat Ivar Mountbatten and Gabby Windey of "The Bachelorette." The past two seasons have also had some casting twists, like the return of a player from Season 1 entering the castle during Season 2 and three surprise late additions to the cast in Season 3.
