Behind TMC shake-up, Abhishek's elevation: Mamata Banerjee tasks nephew with keeping party MPs in check
Abhishek replaces veteran MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay, who has been unwell, as the TMC's parliamentary party leader. Sources said while the CM praised the performance of the Rajya Sabha MPs, she said there were some 'loose ends' in the Lok Sabha and insinuated that Kalyan had failed to properly coordinate in the absence of Bandyopadhyay and Saugata Roy, another veteran MP. 'Sudip da said he was doing better and if Didi wanted, he would go to Delhi on Tuesday. But, Didi told him, 'No need, Abhishek will take charge as the Lok Sabha leader and choose the party's speakers on different issues.' She told Sudip da he should rest,' said a senior MP.
Shortly after the meeting, Kalyan announced his resignation as the Chief Whip, but Abhishek asked him to reconsider the decision, according to an insider. The Serampore MP later told a Bangla news channel, 'Didi made the point that proper coordination is not happening in the Lok Sabha. If I am guilty of that … that's why I resigned. Abhishek Banerjee spoke to me for 10 minutes. He advised me not to step down and that he would discuss the matter on August 7 when he comes here … What can I do if most of the MPs remain absent regularly? A South Kolkata MP remains absent, so does a Bankura MP. There are so many. Sudip da never comes. Last session, he came but was silent. If Sudip da is unwell, how am I to be blamed? (Deputy Leader) Kakoli (Ghosh Dastidar) comes sometimes. Is the entire responsibility mine? Does Mamata Banerjee know how the work in Parliament is going on? I did the work I was assigned, but I am not a scholar from Oxford or Cambridge and do not wear expensive sarees. Those who criticise Mamata Banerjee are being rewarded (by her).'
Kalyan also took to X to hit out at Mahua, the Krishnanagar MP, following her recent comments about him in an 'India Today' podcast. 'You don't wrestle with a pig. Because the pig likes it and you get dirty. There are deeply misogynistic, sexually frustrated, depraved men in India and they have their representation in Parliament across all parties,' Mahua said when asked about him.
Kalyan said the comments were 'unfortunate' and 'reflect a deep disregard for basic norms of civil discourse'.
I have taken note of the recent personal remarks made by Ms. Mahua Moitra in a public podcast. Her choice of words, including the use of dehumanising language such as comparing a fellow MP to a 'pig', is not only unfortunate but reflects a deep disregard for basic norms of civil…

'Labelling a male colleague as 'sexually frustrated' isn't boldness, it's outright abuse,' he wrote on X. 'If such language were directed at a woman, there would be nationwide outrage, and rightly so. But when a man is the target, it's dismissed or even applauded. Let's be clear: abuse is abuse — regardless of gender. Such remarks are not just indecent, they reinforce a toxic double standard where men are expected to silently endure what would never be tolerated if roles were reversed.'
He told the news channel that instead of taking action against Mahua, the party was 'targeting' him. 'I have ethics and culture. Mamata di knows everything. She runs the party. That is why I resigned. Didi said she was not consulted while choosing speakers. She was consulted. I can't accept injustice … I have a good relationship with Abhishek, he is competent.'
In April, the two had clashed after a TMC delegation went to the EC office to submit a memorandum on the duplication of electoral ID numbers. At the time, TMC insiders said the spat took place after Mahua found her name missing from the list of parliamentarians to have signed the memorandum. She alleged Kalyan had abused her and urged the security officials to arrest him.
Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee took to X to announce Abhishek's appointment. 'Given that our Lok Sabha leader, Sudip Banerjee, is unwell and undergoing medical treatment, the MPs have unanimously decided to entrust Abhishek Banerjee with the responsibility of leading the party in the Lok Sabha as the leader of the party until Sudip da returns to good health. We pray for Sudip da's swift recovery and look forward to his continued guidance, enriched by his experience and deep knowledge of parliamentary proceedings.'
Thanking her, Abhishek pledged to work closely with all the party's MPs to 'ensure that Trinamool's voice remains strong and unwavering in Parliament'.
'Our mission remains clear: To protect the rights, respect and aspirations of the people of Bengal. I thank every dedicated worker and supporter of the @AITCofficial for their continued belief in me and our cause and I am also extremely grateful to our senior parliamentarians for their invaluable support, guidance and encouragement,' he wrote on X.

Govt evading questions on citizenship IDs: TMC MP
Kolkata: Trinamool MP Mala Roy on Tuesday accused Centre of hiding behind laws to avoid answering a specific question she had posed in Lok Sabha on identity proofs considered valid citizenship documents in India. To Roy's question on ID proofs, junior home minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar replied on Tuesday: "The Citizenship Act, 1955, as amended in 2004, provides central govt to compulsorily register every citizen of India and issue a national identity card to them. The procedure for the same has been laid down in the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Card) Rules, 2003." Roy said: "I am not at all satisfied with the response from the Union minister. It seems to me that the central govt tried to evade the question. This govt cannot provide a clear answer to any of our questions, and this instance was no exception." The South Kolkata MP added, "Providing a clear answer on citizenship in Parliament could create issues for the SIR. Therefore, the Modi govt still does not have a satisfactory answer regarding proof of citizenship. LS passes bill for quota for STs in Goa assembly
Panaji: The Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed a bill to pave the way for Goa to have an scheduled tribes (ST) quota in the state elections for the first time. While Goa will likely see four reserved ST seats by the time it next goes to polls in 2027, the bill also empowers the Election Commission to effect delimitation and readjust constituencies to give proper representation to STs in the legislative assembly. This was the first bill passed in the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament, which has been rocked by protests by the INDIA bloc since it began. Chief minister Pramod Sawant informed the House about the passing of the bill, which was moved by Union law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who said that the bill was earlier debated with the participation of all parties. It now has to be introduced in the Rajya Sabha. 'Heartfelt thanks and congratulations to Union govt led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the historic passage of the Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Goa Assembly Constituencies Bill, 2025, in the Lok Sabha,' said Sawant. 'This is a success of BJP govt's persistent efforts and reflects Modi govt's commitment to inclusive governance and tribal empowerment.' Last year, before the Lok Sabha elections, leaders of the ST community in Goa began a chain hunger strike and threatened to boycott the election if govt failed to provide them the quota. A day later, the Union cabinet cleared the Scheduled Tribes Reservation Bill. Earlier, Sawant led a Goan delegation to Union home minister Amit Shah to demand reservation for the community. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo During the last delimitation for the ST community held in 2002, their numbers were too small to warrant a quota. However, with the addition of new tribes—Kunbi, Gawda, and Velip—to the list of scheduled tribes, their numbers increased considerably. The ST community is now estimated to be around 1.5 lakh, and the number of reserved seats will be based on the revised population figure. As per the 2001 census, the number of STs in Goa was recorded at 566, while the total population was more than 13 lakh. With the addition of the new tribes to the ST list, their numbers increased to over 1.4 lakh in a population of 14.5 lakh as per the 2011 census. Scheduled castes, with a population of around 25,500, already have one seat reserved (Pernem) in the 40-member assembly. 'Thus, a peculiar situation has arisen in the state, wherein the population of the STs vis-a-vis the population of SCs is considerably higher. Though one assembly constituency is reserved for SCs in the state, no seats are reserved for STs, and they are unable to avail the constitutional benefit of reservation as per the provisions of Article 332 of the Constitution,' the bill states. The bill passed on Tuesday empowers the EC to amend the delimitation of parliamentary and assembly constituencies order, 2008. 'The EC shall take into consideration the revised population figures of the scheduled tribes and readjust the legislative assembly constituency having regard to the provisions of articles of the Constitution and sections of the Delimitation Act, 2002,' the bill states. In Aug 2023, the Centre said the delimitation exercise would only begin in 2026. State govt had asked Centre to constitute a delimitation commission to identify four assembly constituencies to be reserved for the ST community.
