
Chinese hotels turn to hawking food as guests tighten belts
"These days, it's not that people will come just because you lower prices or offer discounts — they simply don't come at all," said Anwen Xu, its sales director, explaining the need to find new income streams.
Beiyuan is among at least 15 high-end hotels nationwide hawking food outside in recent weeks, according to their social media and Chinese news sites. Their sales had been hit by weaker consumer demand, cuts to corporate and official travel budgets and a lack of banquet reservations, staff said.
Xu said Beijing's moves earlier this year to reinforce austerity and discipline among public sector workers and party members, including bans on dining out in large groups and curbs on alcohol consumption, had also hurt business.
Analysts say the hotel hawkers are another sign that deflationary pressures risk becoming entrenched in the world's second-largest economy, whose growth leans more on manufacturing and exports than consumption.
Consumer prices were flat year-on-year in July.
"These high-end dining establishments, especially five-star hotels, are having to make strategic adjustments to survive," said He-Ling Shi, an economics professor at Monash University in Melbourne.
"What this phenomenon reflects is that China's overall economic situation is now facing a fairly significant risk of deflation."
Analysts also cite 3 yuan (US$0.40) breakfasts and supermarkets offering flash sales as deflationary signs.
China's catering revenue grew 0.9 per cent year-on-year in June, down from 5.9 per cent in May, official statistics showed. In the first half of 2025, accommodation industry profits in Beijing fell 92.9 per cent year-on-year, according to government data.
"The food and beverage business has been under considerable pressure," said Wei Zheng, a staff member at Grand Metropark Hotel in Beijing, which began selling street food on July 10.
"Many hotels have adopted methods such as selling outside to increase revenue," added Wei, noting the hotel earns an extra few thousand yuan a day hawking braised duck, fish stew or crayfish.
Xu at Beiyuan said their outdoor bestseller was the hotel's signature crispy roast pigeon at 38 yuan (US$5.29) per bird, which is priced at 58 yuan on the menu inside.
Since opening on July 28, the stall has sold about 130 pigeons a day, compared to about 80 previously.
Within a few months, private dining-room use has fallen from full to about one-third, and average per-head spend inside has halved to around 100–150 yuan, Xu said.
She added the outdoor stall operates with a 10 per cent to 15 per cent margin, which she said was better than the average caterer but still not enough to fully offset the fall in business indoors.
'HESITANT' CONSUMERS
Yaling Jiang, founder of research consultancy ApertureChina, said consumers "continue to seek value and novelty in an economic downturn" but are "hesitant" when it comes to high-end spending.
Shopper Seven Chen, who bought barbecue pork, said he understood what the Beiyuan hotel was trying to do, adding that he was also staying in fancy hotels less often than in the past.
"The main thing is people don't have enough income," said Chen, who works in finance and lives nearby.
Others adopting a street food strategy, according to their social media accounts, include the JW Marriott in Chongqing and Hilton Wuhan Riverside in Wuhan. The latter did not comment, while a Marriott staffer said the hotel sells dishes outside from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. They did not go into further detail.
The five-star River & Holiday Hotel in Chongqing, says its daily revenue surged to 60,000 yuan from just a few thousand after setting up food stalls in its car park last month. Marketing and sales manager Shen Qiuya dismissed online criticism that the practice could erode brand value.
"Every industry is facing difficulties this year," Shen said. "Survival is the most important thing. Face isn't worth anything."

Timor-Leste nears permanent ASEAN membership ahead of October summit
SEREMBAN: Timor-Leste's permanent membership in ASEAN is now in the documentation phase before its formal admission at the October summit. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan confirmed the progress during a press briefing today. 'At the upcoming ASEAN Summit in October, there will be a ceremony to welcome Timor-Leste as a permanent member of ASEAN. Right now, it is only at the documentation stage,' he said. He added that Timor-Leste has met most of ASEAN's membership requirements. 'We decided that they should first be admitted as a permanent member, after which ASEAN will assist them in completing the remaining documentation process,' he explained. Mohamad spoke after officiating UMNO Rembau's women, youth, and puteri division meetings. ASEAN reaffirmed its commitment to Timor-Leste's inclusion as the 11th member at the 47th ASEAN Summit in October. The decision aligns with the outcome of the 46th ASEAN Summit. A Joint Communique from the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting on July 9 highlighted support for Timor-Leste's early accession to key economic agreements. 'We look forward to Timor-Leste fulfilling its roles and obligations as an incoming member state and its commitment to upholding ASEAN's fundamental principles,' the statement read. Indonesia's gas subsidy cut could slash industrial output, trigger layoffs: Industry Ministry
JAKARTA: Industry Ministry spokesperson Febri Hendri Antoni Arief said the ministry had received a flood of complaints from private companies reliant on the government's fixed natural gas price (HGBT) programme. According to him, supply disruptions and steep surcharges, such as state gas company PGN's tariff of US$16.77 per mmbtu, are squeezing manufacturers, particularly in energy-intensive sectors like ceramics, glass, steel, fertiliser, petrochemicals and oleochemicals. 'Energy costs make up a significant share of production expenses in these industries. Any increase in prices or cuts in HGBT supply erode margins, lower factory utilisation and, in the long run, deter investment, especially in energy-intensive manufacturing,' Febri said in a statement on Thursday (Aug 14). He added that this appears to be a recurring problem, despite the existence of a presidential decree that fixes the price and ensures supply continuity. 'No party or institution should attempt to override the President's order by raising the price above $6.5 or restricting the supply,' he noted. Indonesia's industrial gas demand is estimated at 2,700 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd), but the available HGBT supply is only 1,600 mmscfd, with about half, roughly 900 mmscfd, allocated to state-owned enterprise (SOE) consumers. He noted that SOEs such as PLN and Pupuk Indonesia have been the largest HGBT beneficiaries. 'Private manufacturers, the backbone of the national industrial base, are often treated differently. This imbalance risks undermining the business climate,' he said. 'If the private sector's share continues to shrink, the consequences will be immediate: reduced capacity, lower efficiency and potentially mass layoffs.' According to the ministry, 134,794 industrial workers rely on a stable HGBT supply. If volumes fall to just 48 percent of demand, a significant share of these jobs could be lost. The sectoral breakdown of workers at risk includes: fertiliser (10,420), petrochemicals (23,006), oleochemicals (12,288), steel (31,434), ceramics (43,058), glass (12,928) and rubber gloves (1,660). 'These figures are a serious alarm. Every gas policy must weigh its impact on industrial sustainability and the livelihoods it supports,' Febri said. Ministry data shows several sectors are already facing declining utilisation due to gas constraints. The national ceramics industry, for example, averaged 70 to 71 percent utilisation in the first half of 2025. 'If supply disruptions persist, even critical sectors like fertiliser, which supports President Prabowo's food self-sufficiency programme, could see output decline,' Febri warned. Previously, Indonesian Ceramics Association (Asaki) chairman Edy Suyanto said the ceramic industry in West Java is now limited to 48 percent of its HGBT gas allocation, down from the previous 60 percent set by PGN. In eastern regions, the cap is 40 percent. 'From August 13 to August 31, only 48 percent of the HGBT gas volume can be used, while the remainder will incur a surcharge of US$14.8 per mmbtu due to force majeure,' Suyanto said on Wednesday, as reported by Bisnis. He urged the government to resolve the disruption by ensuring adequate HGBT quotas. The industry is also grappling with a surge in low-priced ceramic imports, which is putting additional pressure on domestic production. - The Jakarta Post/ANN
