Experiment Reveals What Prolonged Fasting Actually Does to The Human Body
An international team of researchers has published a new study analyzing the effects of water-only fasting diets on 20 people over the course of 10 days (so nothing except water – not even other drinks). The participants lost an average of 7.7 percent of their body weight, but also experienced side effects including headaches, insomnia, and low blood pressure.
Overall, fasting seemed to increase inflammation and put more stress on the body, which can then lead to numerous complications with health – especially for those with existing heart or vascular conditions.
"Our hypothesis was that prolonged water-fasting would reduce inflammation in the body," says physician scientist Luigi Fontana, from the University of Sydney.
"However, we found the opposite was true – that prolonged fasting put stress on the body and increased the number of pro-inflammatory proteins in the blood, potentially increasing the risk of health issues for people with existing heart and vascular conditions."
The main way the researchers measured the effects of fasting on the body were through protein levels. A number of proteins linked to inflammation, including C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin 8 (IL-8), became much more abundant in the blood plasma of participants.
Other effects were seen as well: the levels of proteins linked to breaking down muscle and bone were reduced, as were the amyloid beta proteins strongly associated with the development of Alzheimer's disease.
The evidence is still relatively inconclusive, however. These are only initial findings in a small group of people, all of whom where medically classed as overweight. The effects may vary in larger sample sizes, or in people with different body types.
There also seems to be very serious downsides to depriving the body of food for an extended period of time – which means medical advice should always be sought before starting a diet like this.
"While the acute inflammatory response during prolonged fasting may serve as a transient adaptive mechanism, it raises concerns regarding potential cardiometabolic effects that could persist after refeeding," write the researchers in their published paper.
"Further investigation is warranted to elucidate the long-term molecular and clinical implications of prolonged fasting across diverse populations."
The team points to previous studies highlighting the potential benefits of intermittent fasting in slowing down cell aging, reducing inflammation (the opposite of what was seen here), and reducing the risk of disease, so it's a complex picture.
In recent years, more attention has been given to intermittent fasting than prolonged fasting. It seems that intermittent fasting must be combined with calorie control in order to see any benefit in terms of weight loss, and again there are drawbacks to consider.
What seems clear is that there's no one-size-fits-all strategy when it comes to fasting – and any attempt to lose weight by shutting off the body's supply of food and energy needs to be carefully managed.
"People are looking for effective ways to manage their weight and while the effects of water-only fasting can be dramatic, more work needs to be done to understand the impact of these diets on the body over a longer period of time," says Fontana.
The research has been published in Molecular Metabolism.

Inspiring women in mining: Patience Mpofu, Insight Mining Experts
After more than 30 years working in mining and sustainability, Dr Patience Mpofu is an undisputed industry veteran – but she never planned it this way. 'Mining chose me,' says Mpofu, adding, with a grin, 'but I fell in love with mining.' After gaining an undergraduate degree in chemistry in South Africa, Mpofu obtained her first job in the industry as a research chemist at Impala Platinum. Not long after she was sponsored by Anglo Platinum to work on a tailings-focused sustainability project funded by the Australian Mining Industry Research Association. The role brought Mpofu to Australia, now her home, and where she went on to complete a PhD in mineral processing. It was only then, she says, that she realised mining's unequivocal impact on 'planet and people – including myself'. Mpofu was hooked by the potential to create a positive impact, even if she was often intimidated by being the only woman in the lab or field. 'The overalls never fit properly and there were never any women's toilets onsite,' she says. Supporting sustainability Inspired by these early roles – and subsequent senior ones at Anglo American, Lonmin (now Sibanye Stillwater) and South32 – Mpofu's focus nowadays is on championing sustainability and supporting women in climbing the ranks. Among the many positions she now holds, Mpofu is the CEO and founder of Insight Mining Experts, which supports miners with their environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals and conducts sustainability research. 'I was reflecting on my career, and I realised I had been working more on sustainability than anything else,' muses Mpofu. It is not just about the environment but also understanding communities' needs, she explains. 'Even at Lonmin [as senior manager for businesses development and strategy], I was doing transactions, but it was also about sustainability because we decided to give equity to employees and support local communities. When you start thinking, how do we ensure our communities are part of what we are doing? That is sustainability.' That role was a 'learning curve' for Mpofu – and where she decided this was an area she wanted to focus on. Later, at mining and metals company South 32, she was promoted to vice-president of corporate affairs and sustainability. Today, through her consultancy, Mpofu focuses on promoting circularity within the industry. 'If we start at the beginning where we hit the rock, then I think we can change the narrative about the mining industry; we need to start thinking about how we are designing the mine of the future and make sure we close the loop,' she says. Overcoming tailings management challenges Mofu says many of the issues the mining industry faces are tied to the fact it is still dumping waste. 'People see that waste; we are not leveraging all the ways we can to create value, employment and empowered communities,' Mpofu says. Insight Mining Experts was recently involved in an UpLink innovation challenge on circularity in the mining sector where start-ups could showcase their work. The consultancy participated because, Mpofu says: 'I am passionate about using innovation to change the industry – the projects are phenomenal. That is the next stage for us, to showcase what these people are doing and how mining companies can really embrace or support them.' For tailings management, where she had an early focus, does she think the industry has made progress? 'Absolutely,' she says, 'particularly in Australia.' Last year, Insight Mining Experts completed a report on Australia ESG performance of which she says it is a leader 'in certain areas'. While there has been notable progress in areas such as dewatered tailings and processing plants, Mpofu caveats this optimism by adding: 'Is it enough? No, we need to do more.' A huge challenge is legacy tailings that are "just sitting there". 'I was in Zambia recently working on an EU circularity project, mining has been [stopped] for decades, and the tailings are still there; they are huge. When people say mining is dirty it is because that is what they see.' Championing women in mining Another key challenge – and passion – for Mpofu is getting more woman into the mining industry. She has had her fill of 'being the only one in the room to look like me'. 'It is difficult when you probably don't laugh at the same jokes as your peers, superiors or subordinates. You want your sisters in there.' 'It has changed a bit, but not as much as we move upwards. It can be lonely. Sometimes you are misunderstood, sometimes you feel you are not enough,' she adds. In her career, Mpofu says she has never tried to hide her femininity. At times those qualities helped her to rise up the ranks. Her empathetic leadership style saw her promoted at Lonmin. She became a senior manager there when the company was negotiating with unions after the Marikana massacre, where 34 miners were killed by the South African Police Service. 'We had to negotiate with the same communities that were not happy, but I think coming in with an empathetic leadership style took me to the next level, including being vice-president,' she says. Luck has also played a role. When Mpofu joined Anglo Platinum, the organisation had a terrible safety record and changed its senior leadership team. This included eventually hiring the company's first and only female CEO, Cynthia Carroll, who "fundamentally changed everything". 'I was lucky that we went through a very strong cultural change in a very short space of time. I was at the peak of my career, and I worked for an organisation that was very good. In general, I was lucky I had some of the most amazing bosses in my early careers,' Mpofu reflects. However, there were times when she felt "excluded from certain conversations" and considered moving out of the sector. 'In hindsight I realised it takes two. Some people think 'my work will do the talking', and that was me, but the lesson was realising you also need to speak to people and say, 'this is what I want'. It is never just about what you deliver; there are people who never delivered, but they had senior roles.' She stresses the point: 'If senior leadership is sitting with talent management and they don't know you; it becomes difficult for them to advocate for you – I was lucky enough to have mentors, champions of female leadership and sponsors.' Becoming a mentor However, more needs to be done to attract women to the mining sector and make the workplace more inclusive. This is something Mpofu has made a personal mission. During lockdown Mpofu wrote the Amazon best-selling book Unleashing My Superpowers, a memoir and manual for women working in male-dominated industries. Today, she offers CEOs and executives leadership coaching and diversity and inclusion workshops. 'Many people ask me, 'if I want to move into the mining industry, what can I actually do?' And I say 'it depends', but I always encourage women to go into STEM [science, technology, engineering and mathematics] because if you are in STEM, it is easier for you to rise because there are not many women there,' she advises. Mpofu also suggests looking at careers that are becoming more prominent, such as a sustainability analyst or practitioner or working with AI. "Those are the careers of the future,' she says. Additionally, join groups (such as Women in Mining NSW/WA), try to understand what the industry is and find a mentor, then a sponsor, and as you rise, a coach, she advises. Mpofu also has a son and knows it can be a struggle for mothers in the mining industry. 'Sometimes I had to travel far, and then my son, who was going to pick him up? It was really hard.' This is possibly a reason why she moved into corporate when she did, she says. 'At least now there is work from home, maternity and paternity leave, it is getting better, but I think more can still be done.' Excited about the future of mining Mpofu, who is a non-executive director at Orion Minerals, says some of the challenges that exist within the mining industry today include the fact that it has lost some of its stock exchange value to Big Tech; squeezed margins; high capital costs and long lead times have put investors off. 'But we can be clever and more innovative, we can take the mining industry to the next level,' she says. Mpofu believes technology will be the gamechanger. 'Going forward, innovation will be so critical," she says. "There are opportunities with AI; look at what KoBold Metals is doing. Exploration is one area where it is absolutely transformational, then companies are going back into tailings to mine – all possible because of technology. 'There are legacies of the mining sector, but we need to start looking futuristically, harnessing innovation and technology, and saying it is for everybody. 'We cannot leave women and girls behind when the mining sector is making strides and it is changing the world," she concludes. "Let's make our environment inclusive for everybody.' Mutant species linked to $170 million damage bill in Australia
Invasive snails that are costing Australia's grain farmers $170 million a year have mutated and now have resistance to common pesticides. Researchers from the University of the Sunshine Coast were examining the animals' mucous trails when they discovered an enzyme that can neutralise toxins used in organophosphates. The university's Professor Scott Cummins told Yahoo News it was unclear whether the Theba pisana snails, commonly known as the white garden snail, developed resistance to pesticides in Australia, or their native Mediterranean homeland. 'It's only been the last few hundred years that we've used pesticides with these chemicals, so the mutation has likely occurred during that period,' he said. Snails are a major problem for Australia's grain industry, because not only do they eat the leaves of plants, they also get caught up in processing equipment, contaminating it, and leading to its sale price being downgraded. Organophosphates, a class of chemical compounds, were first synthesised in the 1800s, and resistance had already been documented in insects, but finding the enzyme in molluscs was 'unexpected'. The snails were found to be producing this protein only during their reproductive season, which is up to four months of the year, a time when they're most active and therefore more exposed to pesticides. Professor Cummins said controlling pest species is a constant 'war' because they continue to adapt to chemicals used to kill them. 'Then we develop something else and it goes back and forth,' he said. To combat the problem, the team are examining whether the venom of spiders, which are a natural predator of snails, could be used as a control. They are testing hundreds of different venoms, with some found to paralyse snails. Similar investigations are already underway at the ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology at Macquarie University, which is investigating using toxins from banana spiders and sea anemones to control mosquitoes. Other alternatives include genetically engineering mosquitoes so only non-biting males survive, or changing the DNA of species preyed upon by pests so they aren't harmed. Australia's national science agency CSIRO has also explored using colour to manage snails, which are surprisingly attracted to the colour red. Is this poison problem similar to antibiotic resistance? Professor Cummins said a key to combatting pest species is understanding their biology. 'We've been relatively quick just to throw on a lot of chemicals and the snail dies, and that's a good thing. But if we can understand how they perceive their environment… then we can have more targeted approaches,' he said. He compares the situation to antibiotics and their overuse, which results in resistant bacteria. 'There's a lot of research going into alternative antibiotics, but also when you use them as well, and not blanketing them all throughout the year, but using them at targeted times instead,' he added. What is the impact of widespread chemical use? The need to explore natural alternatives to chemical and biological controls highlights problems with widespread chemical use on crops. Not only do target species eventually evolve resistance, but they can also kill off other animals that live in the same environment. The world is currently experiencing a rapid decline in insect populations, roughly 45 per cent in just the last 40 years, according to multiple studies. Not only does their loss harm pollination in agriculture, but it also impacts larger species that prey on them, like migratory birds, bats, and small marsupials. Aussies warned against 'honourable' winter trend: 'Doing a great disservice'
While subtle signs of spring are slowly starting to emerge, most Aussie cities are still very much in the depths of winter. And if you've woken up recently and felt a little poorly, you wouldn't be alone. As the weather remains cold and wet in many parts of the country, doctors are reporting an uptick in cases of common winter illnesses, including cold and flu. Several Queensland hospitals were forced to pause non-urgent surgeries last month due to a surge in influenza and COVID cases, taking up hospital beds and aged care facilities nationwide are battling with Covid outbreaks. Now, a prominent doctor is warning Aussies that a noble trend among Australia's workforce is contributing to the spread of many common winter illnesses. "It's that concept of soldiering on," Dr Chris Moy, former Vice President of the Australian Medical Association, told Yahoo News Australia. Those who carry on about their everyday lives by going to work and being out and about in the community, while it "does appear quite honourable", could be costing those around them. "They are more likely to pass it on to other people," he explained. Warning as Aussies 'falling back into bad habits' It's now been five years since the Covid-19 pandemic hit Australia's shores, sending many people's daily habits into a tailspin. Suddenly, we were wearing masks and squirting hand sanitiser with reckless abandon. For a lot of the year, we dutifully sat at home with many working remotely, and picking up new hobbies like sourdough making and doing trivia over Zoom over the weekend, to prevent the spread. But a growing number of Australian bosses are ordering staff back into the office, and in doing so, Dr Moy warns we've gone back to our old ways. "We're falling back into bad habits," he said. "During Covid, we were very clear that we had to stop, we needed people to stay away from work when they were sick to minimise the spread, but we've reverted back to a great degree." He's urged Aussies to "think about the consequences" of their illnesses on those around them. The return to office working, which he in part attributes to cost-of-living pressures and maintaining employment, has resulted in "presenteeism". "Winter is always worse," he said, explaining that the cold brings people into closer proximity, but also because "it does appear that some viruses are more stable in the cold and can spread more easily." According to Dr Moy, there is concern that vaccine fatigue, with many not getting their flu jabs or Covid boosters, as well as the fact that "we've dropped back in terms of good hygiene," he explained. What should I do if I get sick? Dr Moy said that if Aussies are experiencing respiratory symptoms, including coughing, sneezing, a runny nose or a sore throat, they should "be staying home as soon as they develop symptoms and for several days after". He encouraged those who are unwell to do several rapid antigen tests. "Sometimes the first test is negative, so do another one 48 hours later," he said. If Aussies experience high temperatures, shortness of breath, they should contact their doctor, Dr Moy said. He added that Aussies should get their Covid booster vaccines and flu jabs, adding "we're seeing tonnes of influenza". "Just make sure that you are practising good hygiene and basically, try and get out of the mode of soldiering on, presenteeism might appear to be honourable, but you may be doing a great disservice to others." Young Aussie reports 'scary' symptoms after contracting flu Earlier this year, as flu season kicked off, one young Aussie dutifully rolled up her sleeve for her annual flu vaccination. But weeks later, Mikaela was struck down by influenza, and despite having had the flu several times before, this would prove to be by far the worst. 'It was quite shocking how bad it was,' the 23-year-old told Yahoo News. 'I've never been sick like that before.' She described her symptoms as "scary", with "really bad sinus pain, and terrible fatigue." But when she went to see her doctor, the next available appointment was days away.
