Shania Twain Foundation Funds 375,000 Meals to Fight Hunger Nationwide

Yahoo24-06-2025
TORONTO, June 24, 2025 /CNW/ - Shania Twain is bringing more than music to Canada this summer. As her long-awaited tour sweeps across the country, the iconic singer-songwriter is making a powerful statement offstage by funding 375,000 meals for people facing food insecurity through a major donation from the Shania Twain Foundation.
"Giving back to the places that shaped me has always been part of who I am," said Shania Twain, founder of the Shania Twain Foundation. "This tour is not just about performing. It is about making sure communities have what they need and showing up with heart. At the Shania Twain Foundation, we believe everyone deserves access to nutritious food."
The foundation has committed $125,000 through its national partnership with Second Harvest, Canada's largest food rescue organization, supporting local food programs in five tour cities: Calgary, Moose Jaw, Quebec City, Ottawa, and Toronto. Each region will receive $25,000 to address immediate food security needs in their communities.
Additionally, the foundation is donating $25,000 directly to the West Prince Caring Cupboard in Prince Edward Island, expanding the initiative's reach to support food insecurity across multiple communities in the province. Beyond these planned initiatives, in response to Manitoba's wildfire crisis, an additional $15,000 will be donated to Make Way Charitable Society - Climate Change Connection, to support the urgent cold storage needs for emergency food rescue in Winnipeg. These funds will support cold storage infrastructure to increase emergency food hub capacity and reduce spoilage.
The latest findings from Statistics Canada show that food insecurity affects 10 million Canadians, including 2.5 million children. The need for immediate relief is greater than ever.
"This incredible contribution from the Shania Twain Foundation will have an immediate impact in addressing food insecurity in communities across the country," Lori Nikkel, CEO of Second Harvest said. "It's a powerful testament to Shania's deep passion for food access and her commitment to meaningful action. Thanks to the Foundation, many thousands of people will receive the nourishment they need at a time when it's needed most. We are profoundly grateful to be working together to create real, lasting change."
The foundation's commitment to fighting hunger extends beyond Canadian borders. As part of Shania's North American tour, the Shania Twain Foundation is also providing direct support to food banks across the United States, including organizations in Montana, New York, Maine, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Florida.
Founded by the award-winning singer and humanitarian, the Shania Twain Foundation focuses on supporting children and families affected by poverty. Its programs emphasize food access, mental health support, and educational opportunities in underserved communities throughout North America.

Las Culturistas Culture Awards, Plus 5 Things to Watch on TV This Week

Between streaming and cable, there is a seemingly endless variety of things to watch. Here is a selection of TV shows and specials that are airing or streaming this week, Aug. 4-10. Details and times are subject to change. It's all about the culture. Las Culturistas Culture Awards is not just any awards show — it's a cool awards show. Presented by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, who host a weekly podcast of the same name, this show features 100 categories, including but not limited to: Best Vibe, Hands Down (nominees: Japan, Seth Meyers and the Spirit Tunnel from 'The Jennifer Hudson Show'), the Canada Award for Canadian Delicacy (all-dressed chips, Alanis Morissette, Bowen Yang — Age 8) and the Cover Our Bases Award for Thing You Have to Admit Happened This Year (the 'It Ends With Us' legal battle, Karla Sofía Gascón on CNN, the time 'Adrien Brody spit his gum out at the Oscars, threw it to his date and Matt and Bowen were in the shot'). The show was taped in mid-July in Los Angeles with an audience that included Jamie Lee Curtis, Quinta Brunson and Jeff Goldblum. I'll be tuning in with bated breath to see who wins the Canada Award — my money is on all-dressed chips. Tuesday at 9 p.m. on Bravo and available to stream the next day on Peacock. Friendship, boarding schools and a time-traveling love story. At first glance, the IMDb page for the series 'Platonic' might look suspiciously like the one for the 2014 movie 'Neighbors' — after all, both have Nicholas Stoller as the director and star Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen. But the show, which is beginning its second season this week, has a completely different plot: Instead of the married couple they played in that film, Rogen and Byrne play two longtime and platonic best friends who reunite after a significant rift. Season 1 followed the two reconnecting and the destabilizing effect that had on both of their lives. The second season picks up with them navigating the hurdles of day-to-day life while trying to appropriately support each other. Aidy Bryant, Kyle Mooney and Beck Bennett join the cast this season as guest stars. Streaming Wednesday on Apple TV+. 'Wednesday,' the series about the daughter of Morticia and Gomez Addams, had a wildly successful first season and, according to the streamer, became the most streamed show on Netflix ever. Now the surly teen (played by Jenna Ortega) is back for a second season, set once again at Nevermore Academy, a high school for all kinds of fantastical outcasts. This time, she has a vision showing her roommate Enid (Emma Myers) dead — with Wednesday herself responsible. The second season will come out in two parts, with the first four episodes releasing this week and the next four on Sept. 3. Streaming Wednesday on Netflix. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Botanist — Bar Review

Botanist Bar—part of Vancouver's luxe Fairmont Pacific Rim's Botanist restaurant—serves an array of cocktails, from tried-and-true classics to housemade inventions. But the crown jewel of this airy, neutral-toned, light-filled downtown space is its Experiential Cocktail list, which encompasses only four drinks—each one inspired by a different state of water. Ordering an Experiential Cocktail actually starts with a palate cleanser, such as a glass of Oddbird dealcoholized sparkling wine and a bite-sized negroni jelly (made from, of course, an actual negroni). From there, the real show begins. The Raincouver, for instance, is made with vodka, pine aperitif wine, Perrier sparkling water, vegan foam, and fennel pollen, and is served with an edible 'rain' cloud (made from green tea and cherry blossom) hanging above it. The cloud slowly drips into the drink, subtly changing it as time goes on. For even greater enhancement, each Experiential Cocktail is also paired with a small nibble of food from the Botanist kitchen. For the Raincouver, it's a crispy, boneless chicken wing topped with salmon roe—familiar yet surprising, with a burst of umami that plays perfectly against the drink's sweet and sour notes.

'Leanne': Leanne Morgan thought she'd fail every Monday, by Friday, she was the pro

Leanne Morgan's new Netflix show, Leanne, brings back the multi-camera TV sitcom format, adding her unique Southern twist. Also featuring Kristen Johnston, Ryan Stiles, Blake Clark and Celia Weston, it's one of the most endearing shows to watch right now. Morgan and Johnston spoke to Yahoo Canada about the bond they quickly established while making the show, leading to a lot of "bed stuff" with the actors, who play sisters, on screen. From a story about marriage, divorce, menopause and taking care of older parents, Morgan's show is a reflection of her dream coming true. Video Transcript Hi, how are you? Good, my darling, how are you? Good. I loved this show so much. I was hollering so loud. So I can't wait to chat with you. To dive deep into the specifics, the episode where your character's dating and she's going through menopause, I thought was so funny. Also something we haven't seen a lot, but I was laughing so hard when you just lifted your arms up in front of Kristen. Honey, it wasn't hard. Because I have gone through menopause and I have sweat, and um, wake up in the middle of the night and Chuck Morgan, my husband has said, 'What is that?' And I go, Touch this. And he's like, 'Oh.' So I, that is all real and that came from an authentic place. Honey, because I have been through a rough menopause. Now I haven't had to date, thank the Lord. Because that would be, oh yeah, oh Lord, I can't imagine a jungle. It's just not gonna happen. Yeah. What are you doing? I'm getting undressed. That usually happens at the end of the date. I can't go. This was a mistake. Carol, you're gonna have to call him and tell him I'm sick. We'll just try again in a few years. He's an FBI agent. He's gonna know I'm lying. You're right, he is, because he's so good at his job and he's so good looking. You are too. Wait till he tries your meatloaf. I've got that recipe from Southern Living. It's not even mine. I love seeing you two together, but I really can't think of two people that would be greater as parents, as Celia Weston and Blake Clark. It's just perfect. Oh, they were magical, magic. Just every line. Even when they messed it up, we were like, we don't care, just, just say whatever, man. You're brilliant, darling. Yeah, perfect. I think so much at the heart of this series is the relationship that you two have and to see Kristen, how your character is kind of supporting Leanne's character, but is also like doing her own, which I think is really great. Tell me a little bit about just what your collaboration was like. It seems pretty seamless. We got along right away. Instant love, love at first sight. And then I think, you know, another thing that's so great about this writing team is they picked up on all that and I think they bring that into the relationships. Like, I don't think there were like 30 scenes set in Leanne's bed between us until we started, they started realizing how great those scenes worked. So there's a lot of bedstone. Uh-huh, we take to the bed, we take to the bed together, um, but yeah, I think that was it. I think a great writer watches the dynamic and builds on it and takes what works and I think our relationship definitely bled into the show a lot. You're stepping into like a pretty iconic TV genre that I think a lot of people We are gonna watch this and they're gonna feel like a little bit of warm and fuzzy to bring back that like sitcom that I think a lot of us remember, but executed, I think, in a great way that really does justice to our favorites that we loved. But what was it like for you to be able to kind of step into this and to be able to do the kind of multi-cam sitcom and kind of bring that back, I think. Oh, you angel. Well, I was. It had always been my dream and then, um, and I'd had deals before, but they didn't make it. And, and then when Chuck Lorre came to me, I mean, it went so fast moving so fast and casting and everything just fell into place. It was meant to be. Every Monday at the start of the week, she would come in and be like, I can't, it's too, there's so much to remember. I can't do it. I'm, this is gonna be a failure. I'm, uh, uh, and then by Friday, the audience would get there and she'd be like, Rao, you know, like. She was just the pro. Like, and finally after a couple of weeks, every Monday, I'm like, shut up. You've already said it, you're gonna be perfect because you are. But anyway it was a big challenge. It was it was a big challenge, but I tell everybody, she had two jobs. She had her own job and then she had to coach me. She helped me so much because I didn't know the terminology. I didn't know anything, and she would say, this is what's happening. And I, and then, it helped me so much. But yeah, it was a big challenge, but a joy. And then I began, I got settled into it, and I want to keep doing it. It did; it felt like home by the end of it.
