Shannon Sharpe hints at money trouble in the wake of ESPN firing after $50m rape lawsuit settlement

Daily Mail2 days ago
Shannon Sharpe hinted at financial struggles as he urged close friend and podcast co-host Chad Johnson to settle his debts with the NFL Hall of Famer.
Sharpe, 57, was axed by ESPN last week, shortly after he settled a bombshell sexual lawsuit with an ex-girlfriend, who had accused him of rape. In settling the lawsuit, Sharpe's accuser retracted her rape accusation against him.
And now, the former tight end has hinted that money is a bit tight as he pressed Johnson to pay him back.
The duo were discussing the Dallas Cowboys ' contract extension drama with Micah Parsons on their 'Nightcap' podcast when Sharpe claimed that the former wide receiver owed him $5,900 from an alleged loan he gave out almost a year ago.
'Like you do owe me 5,900? You basically told me I'll pay you when I get ready,' Sharpe interjected as they discussed Cowboys owner Jerry Jones's handling of the negotiations - or reported lack of - with Parsons' camp.
'Imma take care of you baby. I'm not Jerry. I don't like that comparison. Don't do me like that,' Johnson hit back.
'[My] pocket's light right now, Ocho... Just saying, pocket's light,' Sharpe said, sending the pair into a fit of laughter.
'See that's why I love you,' Johnson said. 'That's what I need... That's the Shannon I need. We are going to be alright. We're going to be alright. I'm telling you. We're good.'
Sharpe's quip about his financial situation came just two days after he and Johnson were slapped with yet another lawsuit.
The co-hosts have been sued for $20m by Jimalita Tillman - a woman from Chicago who went viral after a flirty moment with Usher at one of his concerts in April.
Tillman - who is said to be suing Sharpe, his 'Nightcap' podcast co-host Chad Johnson and its production company, Shay Shay Media - alleges the hosts knowingly peddled a false narrative about her marital status.
Her steamy interaction with Usher caused a stir on social media at the time, with fans picking up on the intensity between them at the concert.
Though despite her claims that she is not married, Sharpe and Johnson joked that Tillman's 'husband' was divorcing on the back of the viral clip.
'The defendants' false narratives were shared widely across their platforms, reaching millions of followers, viral spread and refutation efforts, despite my clear and public reputation of the false narrative,' Tillman's filing read.
Tillman, a single mother and global director for the Harold Washington Cultural Center, claims she went on national media shows to refute the allegations made by Sharpe and Johnson.
'The defendants continued to post the defamatory content across their social media platforms,' she added. 'I made numerous efforts to contact the defendants to request the removal of this false narrative, but these requests were disregarded.'
Tillman said the false statements have caused 'significant harm to my character and reputation.' She is reportedly seeking $20m in damages.
DailyMail.com has reached out to Sharpe's legal team for comment.
Sharpe was previously sued for defamation by Brett Favre over comments he made about the Green Bay Packers legend's connection to a welfare misspending case during an episode of Fox Sports' Undisputed in 2022.
Favre characterized the comments as 'egregiously false.' However, a judge dismissed the case against him in 2022 after ruling that they were protected under the US Constitution.
Sharpe has been embroiled in controversy this year after a woman, identified as one of his ex-girlfriends, accused him of raping her on two occasions over the course of their relationship in a bombshell lawsuit.
The First Take star, who denied the allegations, stepped away from his part-time duties with ESPN and vowed to return later in the year once he had proved his innocence.
The former ESPN star claimed Tillman's husband was leaving her after the steamy moment at Usher's concert, which went viral online. She alleges that she was not married at the time
Yet just weeks after the accuser reached a settlement and retracted the allegations, it was revealed last Wednesday that he has been fired by ESPN after almost two years.
Johnson had appeared on ESPN's 'First Take' just hours before it was reported that the network had parted ways with the NFL Hall of Famer, who made regular guest appearances on the show.
And the former wide receiver seized the chance to pitch himself to Stephen A. Smith, Molly Qerim and the crew as he appeared to angle for a permanent position in the studio.
Sharpe addressed his shock departure later in the evening, saying at the start of his 'Nightcap' podcast : 'Obviously, I'm sure everybody's heard the news by now that I will not be returning to ESPN.
'I found out this information a little earlier in the week, and really the only thing that I really asked is, "Guys, could we wait until Monday? My brother's going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, I really want it to be about him and I want it to be about my family."
'I said, "This coming out will overshadow everything he's worked his entire life for." And unfortunately it didn't happen that way.'
Sharpe's younger brother, Sterling, was officially inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame at an enshrinement ceremony in Canton, Ohio at the weekend, 14 years after his older sibling received the same honor.
Sterling, 60, spent all seven years of his NFL career with the Green Bay Packers, where he became a five-time Pro Bowl and three-time All-Pro wide receiver while leading the league in receptions in three separate seasons.
Shannon is a three-time Super Bowl champion who enjoyed two successful stints with the Denver Broncos and a brief spell with the Baltimore Ravens in his 13-year career.
After stressing that he 'really enjoyed' his time with ESPN and that he was 'very, very grateful for the opportunity', Sharpe stressed that he was disappointed to upstage his brother with the news of his axing.
'They did what they felt they needed to do, and I'm at peace with that,' he added about his now-former employers. 'But I just wish this thing could have waited until Monday, because I hate the fact that I've overshadowed my brother.
'The first two brothers in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and this is what the headline's gonna be for the next few days.'

Denise Richards' daughter Sami Sheen shares chilling claim she 'almost got sex trafficked'

' daughter Sami Sheen has claimed she had a close call with a suspected sex trafficker. OnlyFans star Sheen, 21, whose father is actor Charlie Sheen, shocked fans with a chilling TikTok video in which she said she was approached by two suspicious men in a parking lot late at night. She said: 'I think I almost got sex trafficked tonight. We were at this restaurant pretty late. We didn't leave until midnight and we were outside taking photos in the parking lot, we were there for five minutes. 'This man came up to us asking for money, I said "sorry I don't have any cash on me". 'He's being persistent, I'm like, "sorry no" and he goes "ok have a good night". Sheen said she then turned her head to see 'another man in front of us.' 'The second I saw this man I had the worst feeling in my stomach, like get the f**k away from me right now', she said. 'He comes up to me and asks "do you speak Spanish?" 'He starts to reach into his back pocket and I reach into my purse and pull out my pepper spray, and I open that b***h and he saw that and he started to pull a card out. 'We immediately book it, get in my car and lock the doors.' Sheen said she was disturbed to see one of the men in the background of her photos from earlier in the evening, saying: 'I feel like they're working together. The man was watching us the whole time, he was staring at us. 'I'm usually very aware of my surroundings and I didn't notice this man 'I don't think this man had good intentions at all.' The video comes days after Sheen revealed her intense battle with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The model — whose mom is in the midst of divorcing her estranged husband Aaron Phypers — started the recording by saying: 'Nothing aggravates me more than when someone is like, "Oh, my god. I'm so OCD I need to keep my room clean and organized."' She contrasted that statement with her own experience, explaining, 'I'm so OCD that even if I buy something from the grocery store that day and I read the expiration date over and over and over and over again, somehow I will convince myself it's a fake expiration date and it's actually expired a year ago.' Engaging her 192,000 followers, she continued, 'And if I eat it I'm going to get violently ill, so I have to throw it away and starve.'

This is the first picture of the young British mother whose father-in-law allegedly tried to drown in a swimming pool near Disney World in Florida. Hairdresser Jasmine Wyld, 33, was left with a scratch on her chest and fearing for her life after getting into a heated row with Mark Gibbon, 62, about his will during a luxury holiday. Ms Wyld shares two children with Mr Gibbon's son, Alex, who had previously worked with his father at his film and television lighting firm Ultralight in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. He resigned as director in April 2023. Mr Gibbon Snr has since renamed the company as MRG Lighting. He is listed as the sole director. Facebook photos show Ms Wyld happily smiling with Alex and their two children, with one snap showing her posing with celebrity chef James Martin. Companies House documents show she was previously a director of Jasmine Elizabeth Hair, but the firm was dissolved 'via a voluntary strike off' in April 2024. Their nine-year-old daughter reportedly bravely jumped into the pool in an attempt to save her mother at the Solterra Resort in Davenport on Sunday after witnessing her grandfather repeatedly trying to plunge Ms Wyld's head under the water. Ms Wyld tonight declined to comment when contacted by the Daily Mail. According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Mr Gibbon had got into a spat with Ms Wyld over the 'stipulations of his will'. 'She advised that she could not breathe and believed that she was going to drown,' deputies wrote. '[The victim] advised that she had to fight Mark in order to get away from him and from under the water but he kept pushing her back under.' Mr Gibbon's company MRG Lighting has previously worked on television and film sets, as well as on music videos for Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith and Paloma Faith. He is also listed as the only director of Sage Hairdressing. Mr Gibbon allegedly only stopped the attempted drowning when two neighbouring sisters said they had called the Sheriff's Office. He was taken into custody on August 3 at around 5.19pm where he allegedly admitted to pushing his daughter-in-law under the water but denied trying to drown her. He claimed they were drinking when they got into a row about the will, reported Law and Crime. According to US website People, a witness told officers she had 'observed [Gibbon] push [Wyld] under the water and hold her there multiple times', and then watched as he 'scratched Jasmine on her chest.' Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said: 'It's great that Polk County draws visitors from all across the world, but we expect vacationers to behave while they visit with us, just as we expect our lifelong residents to do the same. 'Because Mr Gibbon couldn't control his anger, he may find himself spending a lot more time in Florida than he had anticipated.' Gibbon has been charged with two counts of battery and one count of attempted second-degree murder, according to court documents. He is next due in court on September 9.
