A paranormal investigator's sudden death has sparked a new mystery.
Dan Rivera—who was hosting a national tour of the original Annabelle doll, popularized in The Conjuring movie franchise—died suddenly following a stop with the New England Society of Psychic Research (NESPR) in Gettysburg, Pa. He was 54.
"It's with deep sadness that Tony, Wade, and I share the sudden passing of our close friend and partner, Dan Rivera," NESPR lead investigator Chris "Jeek" Gilloren wrote on the group's Facebook page July 14. "We are heartbroken and still processing this loss."
Gilloren went on to reflect on Rivera's legacy, sharing, "Dan truly believed in sharing his experiences and educating people on the paranormal. His kindness and passion touched everyone who knew him."
He added, "Thank you for your support and kind thoughts during this difficult time."
Rivera's cause of death wasn't shared. The Adams County Coroner listed it as "pending," according to records viewed by USA Today.
Authorities were called to a local Gettysburg hotel on the evening of July 13 and responded to a report of a CPR in progress of a 54-year-old man, according to Adams County dispatch scanner archives obtained by the outlet.

One day prior, NESPR hosted a showing of the Annabelle doll, which inspired the chilling character in the Conjuring horror film franchise.
The doll is normally kept at the Warrens' Occult Museum in Monroe, Conn., which was created by NESPR founders Ed Warren, a demonologist, and his wife Lorraine Warren, a trance medium (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga in the movies).
According to the organization's website, the haunting story behind Annabelle began in 1968, when a nursing student was given a Raggedy Ann doll as a gift.
"She brings it home where she lives with a roommate," reads the NESPR website. "Almost immediately, the roommates noticed strange occurrences with the doll and they were introduced to a medium who told them the doll was inhabited by the spirit of a young girl named Annabelle. The two roommates tried to accept the doll's spirit and please it only to have it reciprocate maliciousness and violent intent."
At the time, the Warrens were called to investigate, determining that the doll was "demonically possessed."
"They removed the doll from the house," the site states, "and encased it in a glass box to contain the evil spirited entity."
NESPR's Devils On The Run Tour advertises a "chilling experience" with the doll that has "reportedly brought misfortune, injury, and even death to those who have interacted with it improperly."
Rivera was involved in paranormal research and investigations for over a decade before his death, according to his bio on the NESPR website.
"At an early age he was introduced to haunting phenomena," reads his bio, "having witnessed paranormal events occurring in his home."
In addition to being a U.S. army veteran, the Connecticut native considered himself to be "an expert in the rites and rituals of Santeria."
According to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, "Santería is a syncretic religion based significantly in the traditions of the Yoruba and incorporating elements of Catholicism. Today, roughly 70 percent of Cubans observe one or more Santeria or other religious practices based in an African tradition."

Yellowstone Star Josh Lucas Marries Brianna Ruffalo in Vatican Wedding

Originally appeared on E! Online and Brianna Ruffalo are saddling up for their next chapter. Indeed, the Yellowstone star and the ABC7 Los Angeles Meteorologist tied the knot on July 18 during a picturesque ceremony in Vatican City. 'Mr. and Mrs.,' Brianna wrote on Instagram July 18 alongside several black-and-white photos from their elegant ceremony. 'Incredibly blessed to receive this sacrament together inside the heart of the Catholic Church and holy city.' For his part, the Sweet Home Alabama actor—who sported a classic black tux while his wife donned a stunning strapless lace gown—gushed about their sweet romance in the comments. 'I love you,' he wrote. 'Easily one of the greatest days of my life. I am so so grateful.' And on his own Instagram account, the 54-year-old shared more of a behind-the-scenes look into the moments surrounding their nuptials. 'A huge thank you to deeply talented @caterinaerrani_photography and to @weddings_italy @paolo_nassi @JinaneKafrouny who helped make the dream of wedding in the #vatican come true,' Lucas wrote on Instagram July 19 alongside a photo of him admiring his wife on the cobblestone streets of Vatican City. 'Almost 2 years ago this fall, and with no expectations, Josh walked into my life,' Brianna, 34, wrote on Instagram shortly after he popped the question, 'and we knew almost immediately we had each found our person in a way we've never experienced—on every level.' 'This was the easiest and best question I've ever answered,' she continued. 'So, here's to forever with my love, my best friend. I can't wait to keep living this life with you.' But while Brianna is her husband's biggest supporter in real life, she previously admitted that, when it comes to Sweet Home Alabama, she is team Patrick Dempsey all the way. "From day one, she was like, 'Oh yeah, you were the other guy,'" Josh joked to E! News' Erin Lim Rhodes last March. "She was like, 'I didn't like you because you, like, stole her from Patrick.'" And when they tried to watch the movie together, it didn't necessarily go as planned. "We actually watched part of it once and she fell asleep, like, 10 minutes in and was still like, 'I'm still Team Patrick,'" he added. "And that was it." Duck Dynasty's Jessica Robertson Says Daughter Priscilla Is Pregnant at 18: 'Isn't the Plan We Had'

The addition of Priscilla's baby will mark the third grandchild for Jep and Jessica, whose family rose to fame on the popular A&E reality series. The Duck Dynasty family is about to add one more to their party! Jessica Robertson took to Instagram Sunday reveal that her 18-year-old daughter Priscilla, her third child with husband Jep Robertson, is expecting a baby. The post featured a glowing Priscilla cradling her bump in a pink tank dress, along with a message from the proud soon-to-be grandma. "Me & Jep are excited to welcome another new grandbaby in October. Priscilla will give birth to our granddaughter & we are blessed to add another grandbaby," Jessica wrote in her caption. While the pregnancy may not have been part of the original plan for their 18-year-old daughter, as noted by Jessica, she made it clear their family is embracing the journey. "This isn't the plans we had laid out for Priscilla but God takes our meager offerings and turns them into His greatest blessings! We are so proud that Priscilla & Dillon chose life for their baby and we will all be rewarded with this precious baby girl!" she continued. She added, "We pray blessings on her pregnancy & ask God for a safe delivery for Mom & Baby. We praise God for His perfect gifts!💛 Pray for us! 3 babies under 1!" Priscilla's pregnancy marks the third grandchild for Jessica and Jep in under a year. The Robertson baby boom started in February when their eldest daughter Lily, 22, welcomed son Winston with her husband Austin. Then in June, daughter Merritt, 20, announced she's also expecting a baby girl this December with husband Tyler. At the time, Jessica shared her excitement, posting: "Over the moon to announce another grand baby on the way!!! Baby girl due December 2025!!🩷" With three of their daughters either expecting or already new moms, the Robertsons are bracing for a house full of baby giggles, diapers, and lots of love. In addition to Lily, Merrit and Priscilla, Jessica and Jep, who rose to fame on the A&E reality hit Duck Dynasty, are parents to sons River, 16, and Gus, 9. Solve the daily Crossword

You'll Be Able to Shoot People as the MCU Fantastic Four in *Two* Games This Week

Everyone loves a movie collab these days, and with Marvel being big in not just its own video game shooter and pretty tight with one of the other biggest shooters on the planet, it's not too surprising that we're going to be seeing a battle of the collabs this Friday as both Marvel Rivals and Fortnite prepare to welcome the MCU Fantastic Four. Rivals, of course, has had the First Family around for a little longer, having introduced Reed, Sue, Johnny, and Ben over the course of its first season earlier this year. But the Fantastic Four have been in high demand for Fortnite for quite some time as Epic has leaned more and more into Marvel collaborations. The entire team was conspicuously absent from Fortnite's latest Marvel-themed season, 'Absolute Doom,' last year, which revolved around their archnemesis Dr. Doom invading the game's battle royale island setting. Well, for the most part: eagle-eyed gamers realized that they could find the defeated remnants of the Fantastic Four littered around the map on display, from Reed tied up into a compressed ball in a display cabinet to, uh, Johnny's flaming heart. So it's nice to see them finally arrive in MCU form. The four Fortnite skins, alongside emotes and other accessories, will be available to purchase this Friday, July 25, but can be earned for free by participating in a special squad-based Battle Royale Cup starting on Wednesday, July 23, where the top-earning squads will get to unlock all four skins for free. Meanwhile, over in NetEase's team-based hero shooter Marvel Rivals, things will be a little simpler: all four MCU variant skins for Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and the Thing will hit the game's store on July 25 as well, alongside a special in-game team-up inspired by the film between Human Torch and the Thing. Unlike Fortnite's offerings, which replicate the likenesses of the MCU stars, the First Steps skins in Rivals (revealed with the launch of the game's third season earlier this month) will give the MCU costumes to Rivals' interpretations of the Fantastic Four, rather than completely alter their looks. There are some fun cosmetic tweaks, like Rivals Reed trimming his beard to look a little more like Pedro Pascal, and Sue and Jonny matching their hairstyles to Vanessa Kirby and Joseph Quinn, respectively. But it's more like the Rivals versions of these characters getting to do a bit of movie cosplay rather than the MCU heroes jumping into Rival's multiversal scraps. Either way, if you need to shoot people in a cosmic-ray-induced manner this weekend? You've got options. Want more io9 news?
