Charles hails conclusion of Lord's Test as he meets Indian cricket team

Rhyl Journala day ago
Charles sympathised with the Indian team when he hosted them at his Clarence House home the day after the third Test produced a nail-biting finish.
Lord's, the home of cricket, was the setting for the dramatic result on Monday afternoon – with five days of play decided during the final session as the tourists chased 193 runs to win.
The home side needed the final wicket to win, while the visitors were 23 runs from victory when England spinner Shoaib Bashir, playing with a suspected broken finger, bowled to Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj.
As the batsman defended the delivery, it bounced off his bat and the ball's spin took it backwards into the stumps and he was bowled.
The King told the Indian captain Shubman Gill he had watched the crucial last wicket fall on the news highlights on Monday night.
He said in sympathy, about the dramatic spin on the ball that dismissed Siraj, 'really annoying just to touch the bails'.
And he later told another group of players 'it was very exciting to watch'.
The Indian captain said later about his conversation with the King: 'He did tell us that the way our last batsman got out was quite unfortunate – the ball rolling on the stumps, and he was just asking us how did we feel after that.
'And we told him it was an unfortunate match for us, but it could have gone either way and hopefully we'll have better luck in both the next games.'
India's men's team were joined by the women's cricket squad, who have also been playing matches in England recently – and a number of Indian diplomats and senior Indian executives from world cricket.
Vikram Doraiswami, India's High Commissioner to the UK, introduced the men with the words 'cricket is our religion and these are our deities'.
Before the King arrived, actor Idris Elba, who was due to meet the King at a following Youth Opportunity Summit event at nearby St James's Palace, walked into the Clarence House gardens where the sportsmen and women had gathered.
He told the Indian cricket captain: 'I don't know cricket as well as I should but I play a bit.'
Charles posed for a large group photograph for with the men's and women's teams and squad officials before leaving to take part in the summit.
Cricket is hugely popular in India with players treated like superstars and the lucrative India Premier League has made sportsmen from across the globe wealthy.
The visitors have attracted a large support from Indians living and working in the UK and the wider Indian diaspora.
The test match, which now leaves England 2-1 ahead in the five-match series, was fractious at times with confrontations and words exchanged between the cricketers, but the Indian captain and his England counterpart Ben Stokes appear to have mutual respect for the efforts of everyone playing.
Gill said: 'I think the way both teams played, they showed a lot of passion and we played with a lot of pride – we gave everything mentally and physically.'

Daniel Dubois trainer Don Charles on war, florist life and how Chisora made him a coach

Daniel Dubois trainer Don Charles is a character of many careers but now finally at the top of the heavyweight division as a leading coach of the IBF champion Don Charles has lived a few lives. A child in a war zone, a florist, working in fashion retail and now a boxing trainer to a world heavyweight champion to name just a few. The latter is thanks to a chance meeting with Derek Chisora at a petrol station. ‌ Charles, 63, will be in the corner this weekend when Daniel Dubois takes on Oleksandr Usyk in an undisputed showdown at Wembley. But if his father didn't get out of Nigeria in 1974 then the crazy path he has taken may never have happened. ‌ 'I was in a civilian conflict,' said Charles. 'My country is called Biafra. We were in conflict, a three-year conflict with Nigeria. 'I was six years old when that war started and I was nine years old when it finished. And then my father was a bank worker who moved to England and was allowed to bring his family with him. So I came to England after that war.' ‌ Charles is asked about the conflict, it is uncomfortable for him. 'It's still something I probably need to get counselling for, because when I start talking about it, if I start expanding it, I'll start, I always break down,' he said. 'I saw a lot of horrible things where, forever running away from planes, shooting indiscriminately, they're not, they weren't just fighting the soldiers, they were targeting civilians. I lost close family members, I'm lucky to be alive, me personally.' ‌ Charles settled in London, boxed as a teen and he would, over time, find his way through various careers after dismissing his father's pleas to return to Nigeria to go to university. After being homeless, he lived with another family for a time to stay in England. Odd in itself but even stranger when it was the 1970s and the family was white. 'Where I come from, my tribe is called Igbo,' he said. 'We are known for making something, creating something out of nothing. I've done various things, I run a security company, my own security company. I opened a flower shop, I'm not a florist by trade, but I learnt about it. Did really well with it. ‌ 'I've done fashion retail, no matter what I turn my hand to, I always seem to make good of it. And boxing happens to be something I've excelled in as a coach.' Charles had set up a fitness class for paying customers and brought some boxing into the classes but it wasn't until he met Chisora that he really turned his hand to training fighters. 'I went to put petrol in my car and my late friend Des started talking to Derek and Des told him that the man, me, putting petrol in my car, that I'm a boxing coach, that if he wants to get better, he needs to see me,' said Charles. 'I went to pay for my petrol, at the same time he went to paid for his petrol in the shop. I said, so you're a boxer? ‌ 'He said, yeah. And I gave him my number. I'd just got the keys 10 days prior to meeting him for my first gym. It wasn't built, it was an underground, disused car park. Really horrible smelly car park, but we made good of it. And that's where Derek was born. That's where I was born, in a sense, as a boxing coach.' Charles worked with Chisora until 2019 and they split. They rekindled their relationship before he lost to Tyson Fury for a third time in 2022 in his second world title shot. He teamed up with Dubois before his first fight with Usyk in 2023. That was a defeat but since then they've been on a run of three huge wins including knocking out Anthony Joshua at Wembley to defend the IBF belt. He seems at home at Dubois' 'The Farm' gym in Borehamwood. He sometimes feeds the horses that are in the adjacent stables. Given Charles' history you wouldn't rule out an equine career.

Five Chicago restaurants were just added to the Michelin Guide 2025

The Windy City has long been known for more than deep dish pizza and Chicago-style franks, but if you needed blatant (and delicious) proof of that fact, five more well-loved restaurants have just been added to the esteemed Michelin Guide. Ahead of the annual declaration of coveted Michelin stars and Bib Gourmands, five "new" eateries have joined the guide's "Recommended" category as of today, July 16, staying true to Michelin's ethos of illuminating culinary juggernauts throughout the year. Later this year, the Michelin Guide Ceremony will take place and expectantly these Chicago favorites will earn Bib Gourmand or Star awards. Either way, we're making dining reservations now. The new additions to the Michelin Guide Chicago 2025 are: Mirra: Bucktown Energetic and full of color, Mirra serves up Mexican and Indian fusion dishes, creating special flavors that are difficult to replicate. Jewel tones, subway tiles, exposed white brick, and large windows set the dining stage, while chefs Zubair Mohajir and Rishi Kumar operate at the helm. Tama: Bucktown Creating an ethereal and inventive experience, Tama, is described on its website as 'a votive (an offering or promise) for someone that requires help. A miracle.' And with sharable plates and a relaxed atmosphere, perhaps their meaningful community approach, blending Mediterranean, Asian, and South American flavors, hits the spot for eager diners searching for something newfangled. Open for lunch and dinner, chefs Avgeria Stapaki and Adalberto Olaez have created an attention-grabbing experience inside of house-shaped restaurant, flanked by thickset modern Chicago buildings. Taqueria Chingón: West Loop These are not your abuela's Mexican recipes: inspired by Mexico City-style street food, Taqueria Chingón rings with hungry patrons. What was once a smaller Bucktown establishment has transformed into a larger hot spot in Fulton Market. From duck carnitas to classic al pastor, chefs Marcos Ascencio and Oliver Poilevey have you covered. Nadu: Lincoln Park For elevated Indian cuisine with a fresh twist, Nadu, with chef Sujan Sarkar, serves up sharable plates that are as delicious as they are beautiful. Vegetarian, vegan and meat dishes satiate every type of diner, but leave your babies at home—only diners above five years of age are appropriate. Oliver's: South Loop Let yourself be transported to another time: the golden age of Hollywood. This 1930s Los Angeles-inspired restaurant feels as glamorous as is it does charming, with old photos, vintage artwork, and mirrors dotting the walls. Open for golden hour, come in with friends or loved ones for a boozy beverage prior to a dinner of steak, seafood or vegetarian dishes—you won't regret it.

More than a thousand people stood behind crash barriers to see the Monarch as he toured the town on July 3. He wore his own King Charles III tartan kilt especially for the visit, as he stopped by a number of shops in the area. And one place the King decided to pop into was Fetcha Chocolates - a store which specialises in vegan confectionery. The shop, located on the town's Main Street, is famous for its incredible treats since it opened in 2022. Owner Fiona McArthur was delighted by his visit and said she never "in a million years" expected to have royalty in her store. Such a treat to welcome the King... In a million years, I didn't expect to have actual royalty in my wee shop in the West of Scotland Fiona McArthur The chocolatier founded Fetcha Chocolates in 2019, and her treats have hit the headlines numerous times over the years. Most recently, she received widespread recognition for her incredible 'Everyone Wins' gift bags at the Oscars in 2024, which were full of movie-themed chocolates and were worth over $170,000. And staff actually created a special box of chocolates for King Charles which they gave to him when he visited the store. It combined many of the Oscars-themed flavours as well as a number of flavours from their new The Cannes Collection, which was designed specifically for this year's festival. Huge Prince Harry update as he arranges peace summit with King Charles 'within weeks' – but has no plans to meet William Workers filmed the exciting moment when Fiona met the King when he arrived at the shop. After a formal introduction, Charles can be heard telling Fiona in the short clip, 'I've been hearing about your chocolates.' The video was shared on the shop's Instagram account as they gushed over their royal visitor. It was captioned: "Such a treat to welcome the King into our shop today. "We discussed how far the business has come in these last few years, and he left with some of our Awards Collection chocolates. "In a million years, I didn't expect to have actual royalty in my wee shop in the West of Scotland!" Loyal followers flocked to the comments of the post to congratulate the team. One person said: "What an honour! I would've died of excitement." Another added: "Congratulations!!! This is a testament to your achievements... Well done to you all!" Someone else posted: "How wonderful! Congratulations Fiona". SPECIAL TREAT STAFF prepared a special box of chocolates for the King ahead of his visit earlier this month. The box included some of the movie-themed treats that were created especially for the Oscars in 2024. These treats featured flavours inspired by films, including Poor Things, Killers of the Flower Moon, Barbie, Maestro, The Holdovers, and Oppenheimer. The Oppenheimer chocolate has become a fan favourite and combines dark chocolate, chilli, and popping candy. The box also included many treats from the Fetcha Chocolates' The Cannes Collection. These were Yuzu Ganache, Lucuma Caramel, Cappuccino, Matcha and Lime, Mexican Hot Chocolate, and even Haggis Spice. While a fourth shared: "Phenomenal - something above and beyond even the amazing Oscars and Cannes experiences. A compliment to your hard work and excellent product." And a fifth chimed in: "This is so special, you're amazing". Fetcha Chocolates wasn't the only place that the King visited during his tour. He first visited the local farmers' market, where he watched sheep being sheared, met representatives from charity and community organisations in the town hall, and finally visited the harbour area. And then Charles kept out the cold with a dram of whisky on his visit to the historic town. Charles readily sipped an award-winning 25-year-old single malt by the Glen Scotia distillery. The town made its fortune producing whisky, which was sold around the globe and is now making a resurgence. 5 Staff were delighted by King Charles' visit Credit: Instagram/fetchachocolates
