Hoping to lift their mother's spirits while in the hospital, her twins concocted a plan to secretly bring the family cat, which left viewers split on the decision.
Shanae and Renae Nel told Newsweek their mother started having seizures over the last few months, ultimately leading her to a hospital stay starting on July 27. During their visits, the twins, who are known on Instagram as @theneltwins, heard how she missed the family cat, Luna.
That's when the sisters, along with their little brother, began strategizing about bringing Luna with them for a visit, as they were unsure how long their mom would be in the hospital. They said the idea started as a joke, but hearing how much their mother missed Luna, they knew they needed to pull off a surprise.
The twins shared in an August 6 Instagram video how they successfully snuck Luna in. They placed her in a bag, with a coat thrown on top. They thought the worst that could happen would be if a staff member asked them to leave.

The twins laughed as they recalled that the walk to the elevator felt extremely long. They tried to remain "undercover" and prayed Luna would not meow. While they thought they seemed suspicious, they said it appeared everyone else minded their business.
"I was so shocked; she was so chill," one of the twins said of the cat. "She didn't make a sound."
When they reached their mother's room, they told her they needed to close the curtains, hoping to avoid a big scene. However, their mother started panicking, thinking something had happened, but as soon as they pulled Luna out of the bag, she "lit up."
Unable to control her excitement, the twins kept telling her to be quiet as she spoke with Luna. Their mother fed the cat some yogurt and let Luna lick her hand. Another patient, whose mother had befriended, also came over to say hello.
Luna stayed at the hospital for about 10 minutes, the twins said. And the risk? Beyond worth it for them.
They said Luna was "well behaved" and she never meowed. Their mother told them it was the best present.
And now, finally home, Luna and their mother are catching up on their missed time together.
Viewers Split on Surprise
The act of love instantly touched people's hearts, bringing in over 183,000 views on Instagram as of Monday.
"Can't convince me this doesn't help the healing process," wrote one viewer.
"As a nurse. I saw nothing. In fact, I'm blind in my right and left eyes," another commenter said.
However, many felt the cat's visit was unwarranted: "I get it. But no. The cat gotta be stressed out as well. I hope she can come home soon to see the cat properly."
When asked about the negative feedback from the video, the twins said they're used to getting backlash as they've been posting on social media for years. They didn't care about the response; their mother came first.
"We just wanted to see Mom happy again," they said.

Melissa McCarthy, husband Ben Falcone bring comedy to date night with 'Ghost' recreation
Melissa McCarthy may be a comedy legend, but she's got plenty of dramatic flair, too. McCarthy took to Instagram over the weekend to let followers in on an intimate date night with longtime husband (and fellow comic) Ben Falcone. In a carousel of photos posted Aug. 9, McCarthy showed off some homemade pottery she had crafted at Wild Clay, a studio just east of Los Angeles. The first several photos show the "Bridesmaids" star holding up her hands covered in clay, and posing with several of her projects, but the final shot is the most true to form – McCarthy, 54, and Falcone, 51, look comically serious as they recreate an iconic scene from the 1990 movie "Ghost." Meryl Streep, Melissa McCarthy shock 'Only Murders' co-stars, ditch stunt doubles for brawl McCarthy looks wistfully to the side as Falcone, seated behind her, has his hands overlaced with hers and looks straight into the camera. In the middle of them is the pottery wheel, the site of a sensual scene between Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze in the original film. "We had the BEST time at Wild Clay LA!!!!!!!," McCarthy wrote alongside the post. "Joshua was an amazing teacher. I really found my inner Demi!! Grand Opening Soon!!" The couple, who love to ham it up together, have been married since 2005 and share two daughters: Vivian, 18, and Georgette, 15. "He's nothing but supportive, and he's super smart," McCarthy previously told People of her husband. "He makes me gut-laugh, like crazy gut-laugh, four or five times a day. I hit the jackpot!" The couple has also shared the screen over a dozen times, starring alongside one another in films like "Bridesmaids," "Cook Off!" and "Identity Thief."

Check out Rams rookie WRs' $13k dinner tab with Davante Adams, Puka Nacua
Every year, NFL players have a "rookie dinner" where veterans of the team rack up exorbitant bills at restaurants and ask their newest teammates to cover the cost as a rite of passage. It's a controversial moment, but typically made in good fun and used as a bonding moment for the team. Los Angeles Rams wide receivers had their rookie dinner recently, and veteran wideout Davante Adams posted a video on his Instagram story documenting the moment the rookies found out how much the bill would be: $15,022.21, including tax. Seventh-round rookie Konata Mumpfield joked that, "We'll be splitting this." 'Welcome to the league, my boys," Adams said. Here's how the whole bill looked: Unsurprisingly, the biggest items were alcohol. Two bottles of BTL Chateau Mouton Rothschild Bordeaux cost $3,120, 13 shots of Don Julio 1942 cost $1,274 and 10 shots of Hakushu 18 whiskey cost $1,980. It's unclear how the bill was actually split, though.

Woman Forgets Her Book at Airport, Husband Takes Drastic Action
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A couple's pre-flight routine took an unexpected turn when the wife realized she had forgotten her book. What started as a moment of frustration quickly became a viral sensation when the woman, Alexis', husband Derek came to a thoughtful and unique rescue—by writing her a book of his very own. The video, which has been liked by 2 million users, shows Derek meticulously typing on his phone, not for a game or a social media scroll, but to write his wife a custom book for her to read. Alexis, who is in her early 20s, shared the story behind the video with Newsweek. Photos from Alexis' TikTok video of her husband writing her a "book." Photos from Alexis' TikTok video of her husband writing her a "book." @alexis1hasler/TikTok She said she and her husband had just arrived at the airport after a busy morning when she discovered her book was missing. "I went to get something from my purse and realized my book wasn't in there," Alexis said. "I was super frustrated immediately because I had asked him to get my book out of the car before we left, but he said he didn't hear me unfortunately." After telling her husband not to talk to her for a minute, she looked over to find him typing furiously on his phone. A Romantic Twist in a Modern Age Thinking he was playing one of his usual games, Alexis asked what he was doing. That's when he revealed his thoughtful plan. "Immediately I was like, 'aw,' because that is so thoughtful," she said. "He turned off his Clash of Clans and War of Tank games to write me a book to read." The book, which has not yet been finished or read by Alexis, is a period piece. "He has told me it's sort of a renaissance time frame about a poor struggling baker," she revealed. The act of love, Alexis believes, "shows how genuine my husband's love is for me." The TikTok video sparked a wide range of reactions online. Many viewers were left in awe of the simple yet profound act of kindness. "God, I need to date smarter men," one person wrote. "Y'all are getting custom books and I had to send voice notes to my ex bc he couldn't read texts." Another commenter shared a similar sentiment, writing, "I can write a book for my self...I said as I held back tears with jealousy." The Reality of a Viral Story As with many viral videos, the post drew some skepticism, which Alexis was quick to address. She explained that some commenters wondered why Derek couldn't have just bought her a book. "We weren't through security yet and there were no stores before in our airport," she clarified. Others suggested she read on her phone or download a book, but Alexis responded that she couldn't do that because it strains her eyes. To those who tried to poke holes in her story, Alexis laughed off the criticism, noting that the story wasn't going to be a novel-length read. "Obviously, he wasn't going to write a seven-hour read in the hour we had to wait. By the time we boarded, the reading time was only around four minutes," she said. Ultimately, the viral moment is a testament to the fact that it's often the small, personal gestures that mean the most. For Alexis, the airport saga was a simple reminder that her husband "will literally do anything in his power to make me happy."
