Rookies to watch in the Hall of Fame Game: Detroit Lions edition
DT Tyleik Williams (1st round, 28th overall, Ohio State), OG Tate Ratledge (2nd round, 57th overall, Georgia)
In 2023, the Lions let their potential first ever Super Bowl appearance slip through their fingers. They had the Sam Francisco 49ers right where they wanted them, in the NFC Championship game, but alas, they couldn't close the deal.
Last season, the Lions responded by rolling up 15 wins, but couldn't even get back to the conference title game, let alone reach that first coveted Super Bowl. So this team is right on the cusp, and the quest to finally clear these last hurdles begins on Thursday.
Have they made the right tweaks with this latest draft class?
Head coach Dan Campbell said he wants his top two picks Tyleik Williams and Tate Ratledge, to play in this one.
"I think all of those guys need to play in a game, or games," Campbell said. "I see them playing in this game. Now, am I going to say that it's written in stone right now?
"No, I'm not. But I think I'd like to play those guys."
He went on to say that he hopes his entire rookie class to see some action in this exhibition game. Williams is going to be called upon to help fill those holes in the defensive front, and those issues were certainly on display as the Washington Commanders gashed them for 45 points in their divisional round elimination.
As for Ratledge, his job is to help beef up the interior of the Lions' offensive line, an area where they could use some more depth. Both of these guys have held starting roles, through training camp thus far, so expect some first team reps for this duo.
When it comes to the Lions rookies on Thursday night, it should likely be all about the big boys.
The NFL Hall of Fame Game kicks off on Thursday, July 31st, at 8pm EST. It will air on NBC and Peacock

Russell Wilson Explains Decision to Make Giants Debut vs. Bills
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Week one of the NFL Preseason typically offers young players and roster hopefuls an opportunity to play over the seasoned veterans on the roster. For the New York Giants, there was an expectation that Russell Wilson would sit out of Saturday's game against the Buffalo Bills. On the morning of the matchup, it was revealed that it wouldn't be the case. The veteran quarterback was slated to start for the Giants, making his official Big Blue debut. The move came as a bit of a shock. "I definitely wanted to play," Wilson told reporters after the game with a smile on his face. "Anytime you get to be in the white lines, it's a good thing. It's a blessing." Russell Wilson #3 of the New York Giants looks to throw a pass during the first quarter of an NFL Preseason 2025 game between New York Giants and Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium on August 09, 2025 in Orchard Park, New York. More Bryan M. Bennett/Getty Images The veteran quarterback didn't have to beg his head coach, Brian Daboll, to suit up. And the Giants certainly didn't frustrate Wilson by suggesting he would get the nod to start in a meaningless week one matchup. "Dabs and I were both on the same page," Wilson revealed. "He knew I wanted to play and vice versa. He wanted me to play, and I was ready to go. I love playing." As expected, Wilson didn't see the field for a ton of action. He had an opportunity to go out and throw seven passes. Averaging four yards per completion, Wilson connected with his wideouts on all but one of his attempts, totaling 28 yards. There weren't any touchdowns, but Wilson's drive helped the Giants score their first three points of the game with a field goal. Overall, it was a successful day. Wilson debuted, got his feet wet to begin the year, and made it out of the game turnover and injury-free. "We've worked hard in practice. You never know how it's going to go; it's one preseason game," Daboll said after the matchup. "Russ has done this for a long time. It's not his first rodeo. Gave him some plays to get into a rhythm. All quarterbacks led the offense down to scoring points." Being in the NFL since 2012, Wilson has started all 199 games he played during the regular season. He also has 17 playoff games under his belt, including a Super Bowl victory. Saturday's action wasn't necessarily needed for Wilson, but the veteran quarterback felt it was right after a long offseason. Last year, Wilson spent the season with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He started in 11 games and passed for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions. In the playoffs, Wilson completed nearly 70 percent of his passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns. After his one-year stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Wilson is looking to offer the Giants a major boost after signing a one-year deal with the team. Texans sign former Patriots DB after C.J. Gardner-Johnson injury
Texans sign former Patriots DB after C.J. Gardner-Johnson injury originally appeared on The Sporting News The Houston Texans suffered a big injury, losing C.J. Gardner-Johnson to a serious leg injury during practice. The Super Bowl champion defensive back was originally feared to be lost for the season, but recent tests show that may not be the case. Regardless, the Texans needed to bring in reinforcements to fill the whole that Gardner-Johnson leaves empty, and they've now done that. According to Jordan Schultz, the Texans are signing former New England Patriots defensive back Jalen Mills. Mills has also spent time with the Eagles and New York Jets. On top of Gardner-Johnson's injury, Jimmie Ward is also dealing with a legal issue, so bringing in Mills as a backup plan makes sense.
