Mitigate rain damage, CM Chandrababu Naidu directs officials
VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu held a meeting at his camp office on Wednesday to review heavy rainfall across Andhra Pradesh. The meeting, attended by Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha, and Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu, Chief Secretary K Vijayanand, and senior officials from disaster management, agriculture, and water resources departments, focused on preparing for intense rain forecast for the next two to three days. Naidu instructed officials to maintain high alertness and provide timely flood warnings, particularly in the Krishna river basin, where sudden inflows from streams are expected. Officials reported that the Krishna river could see inflows of up to 5 lakh cusecs by the following day. Now, Prakasam Barrage is releasing 3.09 lakh cusecs of water through 35 gates, with 5,000 cusecs diverted to canals. He directed authorities to alert residents downstream and relocate those in low-lying areas to safer zones. To make optimal use of floodwater, Naidu ordered the transfer of 4 TMC of water daily to fill Somasila and Kandaleru projects, emphasising efficient water management to prevent wastage into the sea. He sanctioned Rs 40 crore for the construction of the Budameru-Velagaleru utility to enhance flood control, noting that heavy rainfall in upstream areas like Mylavaram is channeling water into the Krishna river via Budameru and Velagaleru streams. The Budameru Diversion Channel works are also being stressed the need to reinforce canal and tank embankments to prevent breaches, and clear debris to ensure smooth water flow. Four pumps are currently diverting water from Kondaveti and Pala streams into the Krishna river. He directed district collectors to monitor rainfall closely and provide farmers with real-time updates. Further, Naidu advocated for structures to recharge groundwater, instructing Panchayat Raj and forest officials to plan trenches under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. In urban areas, he ordered the immediate removal of stagnant water from roads and low-lying regions. The Chief Minister emphasised swift and coordinated action to minimise rain damage, protect lives, and ensure effective flood management across Andhra Pradesh, urging all departments to work proactively to safeguard communities and infrastructure.

Punjab to HC: No plan to arrest Khaira in DA case
The Punjab government on Wednesday told the Punjab and Haryana high court that there was no apprehension 'as of now' of arrest of Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira in an alleged disproportionate assets (DA) case being probed by the state Vigilance Bureau. The submissions were made during the hearing of a plea filed by Khaira seeking anticipatory bail. The Congress leader, in his plea, had submitted that a vigilance inquiry was pending since February 12, 2024, regarding the allegations of disproportionate assets and there was an apprehension that he would be arrested in the matter anytime now. 'The apprehension is evident on account of the fact that the petitioner, being an opposition MLA, has been opposing various acts of omission and commission on the part of the state government, and more particularly the chief minister,' lawyers appearing for Khaira had submitted, adding that the vigilance department was having jurisdiction all over the state 'An FIR can be lodged in any district. Hence, he has approached the high court straightway without approaching the lower courts,' they mentioned. The petition was subsequently withdrawn in view of the state's stand.

In a first, PVTGs in Palamu's Nawadih eye stone mining lease
Daltonganj: In an encouraging move, community members of the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG ) under the panchayat samiti of Nawadih, Ramgarh block, in Palamu district, are now keen to shed off their primitiveness. The PVTG is generally seen as submissive and resigned to the fate of suffering without taking benefits of govt schemes. However, at Nawadih, the PVTG wants a land lease for stone quarrying, a venture no one ever thought would come from the members of the community. On Monday, DC Sameera S, DDC Md Jawed Hussain, additional collector Kundan Kumar, and a host of other officers reached Uldanda and Nawadih to launch a pilot project named Unnat Doorasth Adivasi Yojna (UDAY), an offshoot of the PM Jan Jatiya Nayaya Maha Abhiyan. During this, a PVTG woman of the panchayat samiti, asked for a lease of land for quarrying stone. Talking to TOI on Tuesday, additional collector Kumar said, "The demand for a stone mining lease coming from a panchayat samiti woman member belonging to the PVTG surprised us. It made us feel that the PVTG, known for its self-seclusion and isolation from the mainstream, is now wanting to do something new." The PVTG woman even hinted at a chunk of land for stone quarrying near a mission school, Kumar added. However, there was also some resistance from the locals to leasing the land near a school, citing possible environment hazard. On the other hand, PVTGs in Uldanda panchayat were content with whatever they had, remarked a govt functionary. On the UDAY scheme, DDC M Jawed Hussain said, "The DC has taken this initiative to provide the PVTG with certificates and documents to ensure that they are eligible for any govt scheme or benefit." Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to other officials, birth certificates were more in demand from the PVTG families, as 45 certificates were delivered at the Uldanda panchayat and 58 certificates in the Nawadih panchayat. Other certificates for caste, income and residential proof among others were also issued on the spot. There are 31 hamlets of PVTG communities in Ramgarh block with a total population of over 1,300 people.
